Abstract

Mesomorphic phase transitions of 4′-n-alkoxy-3′-nitrobiphenyl-4-carboxylic acids (ANBC) with numbers of carbons (n) in the alkoxy group ranging from 11 to 22 have been studied by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarizing optical microscopy. The D phase, a mesophase of particular interest through its being optically isotropic, was observed for the n = 17, 19, 20, 21, and 22 members of the ANBCs, as well as for the n = 16 and 18 members, as reported previously. The Sc-D phase transition temperature decreased with increasing n, so that the temperature range of the D phase extended over 64° at n = 22. In the n = 15 member, the D phase was certainly observed on first heating, but was not seen on subsequent cooling and second heating processes.  相似文献

The phase behaviour of a thermotropic cubic mesogen of 1,2-bis(4′-n-tetradecyloxybenzoyl)hydrazine BABH-14 was studied under hydrostatic pressure using a polarising optical microscope equipped with a high-pressure optical cell, and the PT phase diagram was constructed. BABH-14 shows the Cr–Cub–I transition sequence under atmospheric and lower pressures, but the Cub phase is replaced completely by the high-pressure SmC, SmC(hp), phase under higher pressures. There is a narrow intermediate-pressure region between the low- and high-pressure regions, in which the Cr–SmC(hp)–Cub–I phase sequence is recognised. The SmC(hp)–Cub transition line has a positive slope with pressure and there are two triple points: one is for the Cr, Cub and SmC(hp) phases and the other is for the I, Cub and SmC(hp) phases. Comparing the phase sequence of BABH-14 with those for BABH-8 and -10, the pressure-induced inversion of the phase sequence between the cubic and SmC phases occurs in the BABH-n homologous compounds. Another new phenomenon is the formation of the monotropic cubic phase on cooling in the intermediate- and high-pressure regions, and an intriguing phenomenon of the cubic phase appearing twice, i.e. I–Cub–SmC(hp)– Cub–Cr phase transition, occurs in the intermediate-pressure region.  相似文献

The ion-pair formation constant (K(MLA)(0) in mol(-1) dm(3)) for Li(B15C5)(+) with a picrate ion (Pic(-)) in water was determined by potentiometry with a K(+)-selective electrode at 25 degrees C and an ionic strength of 0, where B15C5 denotes benzo-15-crown-5 ether. Using the concentration equilibrium constants, K(MLA), estimated from this value, the extraction constants (mol(-2) dm(6) unit) of about ten diluents were re-calculated from previously reported extraction data. Also, the distribution constants of an ion-pair complex, Li(B15C5)Pic, between water and the diluents were re-estimated. A disagreement in the determined K(MLA) value between a solvent-extraction method and potentiometry was explained in terms of the Scatchard-Hildebrand equation; it came from the fact that the hydration of Li(I) in Li(B15C5)Pic was larger than that of free B15C5 in water. Then, the previously determined value by the former method was re-estimated using the potentiometric K(MLA) value.  相似文献

Chemistry-based investigation is reviewed which led to identification of the active entities responsible for the immunostimulating potencies of peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharide. Though these glycoconjugates which ubiquitously occur in wide range of bacteria as the essential components of their cell envelopes have long been known to enhance the immunological responses of higher animals, neither the precise chemical structures required nor the mechanism of their action remained to be elucidated until early 1970s. Chemical synthesis of partial structures of peptidoglycan proved N-acetylmuramyl-L-alanyl-D-isoglutamine to be the minimum structure responsible for the activity and led to later identification of its receptor protein Nod2 present in animal cells. Another active partial structure of peptidoglycan, γ-D-glutamyl-meso-diaminopimelic acid, and its receptor Nod1 were also identified as well. With regard to lipopolysaccharide, its glycolipid part named lipid A was purified and the structure studied. Chemically synthesized lipid A according to the newly elucidated structure exhibited full activity described for lipopolysaccharide known as endotoxin. Synthetic homogeneous lipid A and its structural analogues and labeled derivatives enabled precise studies of their interaction with receptor proteins and the mechanism of their action. Chemical synthesis of homogeneous partial structures of peptidoglycan and lipopolysaccharide gave unequivocal evidences for the concept that definite small molecular parts of these complex macromolecular bacterial glycoconjugates are specifically recognized by their respective receptors and trigger our defense system now widely recognized as innate immunity.  相似文献

We investigated the fundamental photophysics and photochemistry of a cationic dye rhodamine 800 (R800) in water using steady-state and ultrafast time-resolved spectroscopies. In the ground state, the monomer and dimer coexist in equilibrium, which causes significant concentration dependence of UV-visible (vis) absorption spectra. We determined the equilibrium constant as well as the molar absorption spectra of the monomer and dimer from a global fitting analysis of the UV-vis spectra. The obtained pure dimer spectrum indicates that it is a nonparallel H-dimer. In contrast to the absorption spectra, the steady-state fluorescence spectra do not show any noticeable concentration dependence. The fluorescence lifetime was determined as 0.73 ns regardless of the concentration, and the fluorescence of R800 in water was solely attributed to the monomer. In femtosecond time-resolved absorption measurements, we observed the S(n) <-- S1 absorption bands of the monomer and the dimer, as well as the ground-state bleaching signals. It was found that the S1 dimer dissociates to produce the S1 monomer (and the S0 monomer) or relaxes to the S0 dimer with a time constant of as short as 3.0 ps, which brings about the absence of dimer fluorescence.  相似文献

A new stage of endotoxin research was brought about by structure elucidation and chemical synthesis of lipid A, the lipophilic partial structure of the lipopolysaccharide (LPS) of Gram-negative bacteria. Synthetic lipid A exhibited full endotoxic activity, which gave unequivocal evidence for the concept that lipid A is the active entity of endotoxin. Various lipid A analogues, as well as their radiolabeled derivatives and more complex partial structures of LPS, were also synthesized. By the use of these synthetic homogeneous preparations, not only simple studies on structure-activity relationships but precise and detailed analyses became possible on how this typical bacterial component is recognized by the innate immune receptor complex of mammalian cells.  相似文献
