Influence of Ionic Surfactants on Tetrabromophenylfluorone Ionic Associates

Stability constants of ionic associates of a hydroxyxanthene dye, tetrabromophenylfluorone, with a series of organic cations were determined spectrophotometrically. The possibility of quantitative determination of anionic surfactants (alkyl sulfates) in an aqueous solution in the form of a dye anion associate with tetrabutylammonium cation was considered.     

Modification of Synthetic Latexes with Colloidal Silver

Butadiene-styrene and acrylate latexes were studied as matrices for preparing colloidal silver. Colloidal-chemical and strength properties of the modified latexes and Primal E1950 latex films were studied. The heat resistance of these materials was determined.     

ESR study of products of transformation of 3,6-tert-butylpyrocatechol on alumina, zinca, silica, and titania

The formation of semiquinone and phenoxazyl radicals and metallocomplexes with semiquinone ligands was observed by ESR during the interaction of di-tert-butylpyrocatechol with Al₂O₃, ZnO, SiO₂, and TiO₂. In the case of different modifications of SiO₂, admixtures of TiO₂ exhibit a higher reactivity in complex formation with the organic substrate. Translated fromIzvestiya Akademii Nauk. The effect of covalent surface immobilization on the bactericidal efficacy of a quaternary ammonium compound

This study investigates the effect of surface immobilization on the bactericidal function of a quaternary ammonium compound. Quaternary ammonium silane (QAS) coated planar surfaces did not produce any measurable mortality of Staphylococcus aureus, while 1 µm QAS‐coated microparticles did produce S. aureus mortality. The experiments using QAS‐coated microparticles indicate that the ability of QAS molecules to disrupt the cell wall is not hindered by covalent immobilization of QAS to a surface. These results provide evidence that S. aureus cells on a QAS‐coated planar surface are not exposed to a sufficient number of QAS molecules to produce significant mortality. This result has important implications for the development of self‐decontaminating coatings. Covalent immobilization is used to prevent leaching of the bactericidal compound. However, covalent immobilization may result in a significant tradeoff in bactericidal performance. Published in 2007 by John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

New triterpenes from a Chinese medicine, goreishi

Besides serratagenic acid, three new ursane-type triterpenes, named goreishic acids I (1), II (2), and III (3), were isolated from a Chinese medicine, Goreishi (the feces of Trogopterus xanthipes Milne-Edwards). The structures of 1, 2 and 3 were respectively determined as 2 alpha,3 beta-dihydroxyursa-12,18-dien-28-oic acid, 2 alpha,3 beta-dihydroxy-23-norursa-12,18-dien-28-oic acid and 2 alpha,3 beta-dihydroxy-24-norursa-12,18-dien-28-oic acid on the basis of spectroscopic evidence.
