Two-directional synthesis of the non-adjacent bis(tetrahydrofuran) core of cis-sylvaticin

Synthesis of the C₂-symmetric, non-adjacent bis(tetrahydrofuran) core of cis-sylvaticin in seven steps and 24% overall yield from (2R,3S)-1,2-epoxy-4-penten-3-ol is reported. A strategy involving assembly of the central 1,4-diol unit by silicon-tethered ring-closing metathesis and subsequent two-directional functionalization, including establishment of the cis/threo stereochemical relationships of the tetrahydrofuran rings by Sharpless asymmetric dihydroxylation/S_N2 cyclization, is employed.     

Dual decompositions of 4-manifolds

This paper concerns decompositions of smooth 4-manifolds as the union of two handlebodies, each with handles of index . In dimensions results of Smale (trivial ) and Wall (general ) describe analogous decompositions up to diffeomorphism in terms of homotopy type of skeleta or chain complexes. In dimension 4 we show the same data determines decompositions up to 2-deformation of their spines. In higher dimensions spine 2-deformation implies diffeomorphism, but in dimension 4 the fundamental group of the boundary is not determined. Sample results: (1.5) Two 2-complexes are (up to 2-deformation) spines of a dual decomposition of the 4-sphere if and only if they satisfy the conclusions of Alexander-Lefshetz duality ( and ). (3.3) If is 1-connected then there is a ``pseudo' handle decomposition without 1-handles, in the sense that there is a pseudo collar (a relative 2-handlebody with spine that 2-deforms to ) and is obtained from this by attaching handles of index .

     

Hypernuclear fine structure in (9)(lambda)Be

With a germanium detector array (Hyperball), we observed two gamma-ray peaks corresponding to the two transitions (5/2(+)-->1/2(+) and 3/2(+)-->1/2(+)) in the (9)(Lambda)Be hypernucleus which was produced by the 9Be(K-,pi(-)) reaction. The energies of the gamma rays are 3029 +/- 2 +/- 1 keV and 3060 +/- 2 +/- 1 keV. The energy difference was measured to be 31.4(+2.5)(-3.6) keV, which indicates a very small Lambda-spin-dependent spin-orbit force between a Lambda and a nucleon. This is the smallest level splitting by far ever measured in a hypernucleus.     

Hysteresis of charge tunneling in assemblies of carboxylic acid-modified gold nanoparticles

We report on charge transport measurements through laterally contacted assemblies of Au nanoparticles capped with 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid ligands. Both alternating- and direct-current data indicate that although the nanoparticles behave as electrically isolated metallic islands, there is a significant influence from the nanoparticle environment, indicating the existence of a slow reorganization process linked to charge transport. On the basis of the observation of temperature-dependent hysteresis of charge tunneling, we propose that this process is due to proton transfer between the carboxylic acid tails of the ligands.     

Experimental determination of dust-particle charge in a discharge plasma at elevated pressures

The charge of dust particles is determined experimentally in a bulk dc discharge plasma in the pressure range 20-100 Pa. The charge is obtained by two independent methods: one based on an analysis of the particle motion in a stable particle flow and another on an analysis of the transition of the flow to an unstable regime. Molecular-dynamics simulations of the particle charging for conditions similar to those of the experiment are also performed. The results of both experimental methods and the simulations demonstrate good agreement. The charge obtained is several times smaller than predicted by the collisionless orbital motion theory, and thus the results serve as an experimental indication that ion-neutral collisions significantly affect particle charging.     

Measurements of the Decay KL-->e+ e- mu+ mu-

The KTeV experiment at Fermilab has isolated a total of 132 events from the rare decay K(L)-->e+ e- mu+ mu-, with an estimated background of 0.8 events. The branching ratio of this mode is determined to be [2.69+/-0.24(stat)+/-0.12(syst)]x10(-9), with a radiative cutoff of M(2)(ee mu mu)/M(2)(K)>0.95. The first measurement using this mode of the parameter alpha from the D'Ambrosio-Isidori-Portolès (DIP) model of the K(L)gamma*gamma* vertex yields a result of -1.59+/-0.37, consistent with values obtained from other decay modes. Because of the limited statistics, no sensitivity is found to the DIP parameter beta. We use this decay mode to set limits on CP and lepton violation.     

On the Geometry of Inner Approximations to the Set of Null Controllability for Constrained Linear Systems

The problem of obtaining inner approximations to the set of null controllability for linear systems is considered, and the geometry of certain sets arising in the approximation of using linear feedback is explored. A two-dimensional example is worked in detail in order to delineate the limitations to the use of linear feedback.
