The interaction of electron-hole pairs with lattice vibrations exhibits a wealth of intriguing physical phenomena such as the renowned Kohn anomaly. Here we report the observation in bilayer graphene of an unusual phonon softening that provides the first experimental proof for another type of phonon anomaly. Similar to the Kohn anomaly, which is a logarithmic singularity in the phonon group velocity [W. Kohn, Phys. Rev. Lett. 2, 393 (1959)], the observed phonon anomaly exhibits a logarithmic singularity in the optical-phonon energy. Arising from a resonant electron-phonon coupling effect, the anomaly was also expected, albeit not observed, in monolayer graphene. We propose an explanation for why it is easier to observe in bilayer samples.  相似文献

A superposition of zero-order Bessel beams is examined that closely resembles an idealized paraxial Gaussian beam, provided the superposition is not tightly focused. Plots compare wavefield properties in the focal region and in the far field for different values of kw(0), the product of the wavenumber k, and the focal-spot-radius w(0). The superposition (which is an exact solution of the Helmholtz equation) has the important property that the scattering by an isotropic sphere can be calculated without any approximations for the commonly considered case of linear waves propagating in an inviscid fluid. The nth partial wave amplitude is similar to the case of plane-wave illumination except for a weighting factor that depends on incomplete gamma functions. An approximation for the weighting factor is also discussed based on a generalization of the Van de Hulst localization principle for a sphere of radius a at the focus of a Gaussian beam. Examples display differences between the directionality of the scattering with the plane wave case even though for the cases displayed, ka does not exceed 2 and w(0)∕a is not less than 2. Properties of tightly focused wavefields and the partial wave weighting factors are discussed.  相似文献

Exposing the (111) surface of the topological insulator Bi(2)Se(3) to carbon monoxide results in strong shifts of the features observed in angle-resolved photoemission. The behavior is very similar to an often reported "aging" effect of the surface, and it is concluded that this aging is most likely due to the adsorption of rest gas molecules. The spectral changes are also similar to those recently reported in connection with the adsorption of the magnetic adatom Fe. All spectral changes can be explained by a simultaneous confinement of the conduction band and valence band states. This is possible only because of the unusual bulk electronic structure of Bi(2)Se(3). The valence band quantization leads to spectral features which resemble those of a band gap opening at the Dirac point.  相似文献

The method of oxygen isotope substitution in neutron diffraction is introduced as a site specific structural probe. It is employed to measure the structure of light versus heavy water, thus circumventing the assumption of isomorphism between H and D as used in more traditional neutron diffraction methods. The intramolecular and intermolecular O-H and O-D pair correlations are in excellent agreement with path integral molecular dynamics simulations, both techniques showing a difference of ?0.5% between the O-H and O-D intramolecular bond distances. The results support the validity of a competing quantum effects model for water in which its structural and dynamical properties are governed by an offset between intramolecular and intermolecular quantum contributions.  相似文献

Comparisons between predictions of a Biot-Allard model allowing for angle-dependent elasticity and angle-and-porosity dependent tortuosity and transmission data obtained at normal incidence on water-saturated replica bones are extended to oblique incidence. The model includes two parameters which are adjusted for best fit at normal incidence. Using the same parameter values, it is found that predictions of the variation of transmitted waveforms with angle through two types of bone replica are in reasonable agreement with data despite the fact that scattering is not included in the theory.  相似文献

The oxidation of Fe(111) was studied using Auger electron spectroscopy (AES), low energy electron diffraction (LEED), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), ion scattering spectroscopy (ISS) and scanning tunnelling microscopy (STM). Oxidation of the crystal was found to be a very fast process, even at 200 K, and the Auger O signal saturation level is reached within ~ 50 × 10? 6 mbar s. Annealing the oxidised surface at 773 K causes a significant decline in apparent surface oxygen concentration and produces a clear (6 × 6) LEED pattern, whereas after oxidation at ambient temperature no pattern was observed. STM results indicate that the oxygen signal was reduced due to the nucleation of large, but sparsely distributed oxide islands, leaving mainly the smooth (6 × 6) structure between the islands. The reactivity of the (6 × 6) layer towards methanol was investigated using temperature programmed desorption (TPD), which showed mainly decomposition to CO and CO2, due to the production of formate intermediates on the surface. Interestingly, this removes the (6 × 6) structure by reduction, but it can be reformed from the sink of oxygen present in the large oxide islands simply by annealing at 773 K for a few minutes. The (6 × 6) appears to be a relatively stable, pseudo-oxide phase, that may be useful as a model oxide surface.  相似文献

A device for aeration and mixing of cell or organelle suspensions in a vertical bore NMR magnet is described. Multiple external sensors (e.g., ion-selective electrodes) may be immersed in the suspension within the bore of the magnet. The sensors are positioned to avoid noise due to contact with gas bubbles and proximity to the probe head. The required sample volume is minimised. The modular design of components permits the use of the device in magnets of various internal dimensions, or with probe heads of different sample tube diameter, by modification of the simpler components of the assembly.  相似文献

We report the use of time-resolved Faraday rotation to induce and probe the polarization of nuclear spins within a set of quantum wells with varying background electron density. The electron density was controlled over a broad range by making use of structures of mixed type-I/type-II GaAs/AlAs quantum wells that spatially separate photoexcited electron–hole pairs. We find that the optically detected nuclear magnetic field decreases quasi-monotonically with increasing electron density. The likely factors responsible for this behavior are increased electron spin-lattice relaxation, increased electron spin delocalization, and dilution of the electron spin polarization.  相似文献

We report the results of the Knight shift by ?3,??Cu-NMR measurements on single-layered copper-oxide Bi?Sr(?-x)La(x)CuO(?+δ) conducted under very high magnetic fields up to 44 T. The magnetic field suppresses superconductivity completely, and the pseudogap ground state is revealed. The ?3Cu-NMR Knight shift shows that there remains a finite density of states at the Fermi level in the zero-temperature limit, which indicates that the pseudogap ground state is a metallic state with a finite volume of Fermi surface. The residual density of states in the pseudogap ground state decreases with decreasing doping (increasing x) but remains quite large even at the vicinity of the magnetically ordered phase of x ≥ 0.8, which suggests that the density of states plunges to zero upon approaching the Mott insulating phase.  相似文献
