Kinetic Description of the Stationary Band-Like Weakly Turbulent Beam Discharge Plasma in Hydrogen. I. Basic Equations — Numerical Approach — Ionization and Dissociation Budget

On the basis of the electron Boltzmann equation and of the balances for the charge carriers (e, H⁺, H₂⁺, H₃⁺), the H-atoms and the metastable H(2s)-atoms for the H/H₂-mixture the behaviour of the weakly turbulent, band-like electron-beam discharge plasma in hydrogen has been calculated taking into account the main collision and transport processes. In dependence of the normalized discharge length, the life time of the neutral particles in the band-like plasma and the electron beam generated turbulence energy density the ionization and dissociation budget and in particular the most important electron-heavy particle collision rates, which appear in the balance equation system, are investigated in the present part of our paper. In a second part the results related to the budget of the ions and the metastable atomic state will be reported and an analysis of the main processes in the balances will be made.

High-order Talbot fringes for atomic matter waves

We observe the interference of de Broglie waves in the diffraction near field of a microfabricated grating. The reduction of the grating period by self-imaging of second to seventh order is spatially resolved. We investigate the dependence of this effect on the de Broglie wavelength by a time-to-flight technique.     

Spatially Dependent Kinetics of Electrons and Excited Atoms in the Column Plasma of a He–Xe dc Discharge

The radially varying kinetics of electrons and excited atoms in the cylindrical axially homogeneous positive column of a dc glow discharge in a gas mixture of helium and 2% xenon was studied. The experimental investigations comprise the radially resolved measurements of the isotropic part of the electron velocity distribution function (EVDF) using a single-probe technique and of the densities of atoms in the lower excited states by using a laser diode absorption method. The theoretical investigations are based on the solution of the space-dependent kinetic equation for the EVDF and the balance equations of excited gas atoms. Besides a strict solution, various simplified treatments of the electron kinetics as the conventional homogeneous approach and the nonlocal approach have been applied. The electron kinetic behavior in the helium–xenon column plasma changes remarkably with increasing helium gas pressure from a distinctly nonlocal behavior at a low pressure of 100 Pa to a nearly local behavior at a medium pressure of 600 Pa.     

The interaction of cationic polymers with human hair

We present a combination of electrochemical methods, i.e. polyelectrolyte titration and streaming potential measurement, and AFM to characterise the adsorption and desorption behaviour and the morphology of a set of polyquaternium polymers on human hair. Specific charge density and molar mass are correlated to the amount of adsorbed polymer and the ease of desorption. Results are in line with a simple model of coulombic interaction between hair and polymer and are interpreted on this basis.
