Novel alkenylative cyclization using a ruthenium catalyst

Novel alkenylative cyclization of enyne was developed using Cp*RuCl(cod) under ethylene gas at room temperature.     

Relaxational behavior of birefringence of aqueous carboxymethylcellulose under an alternating electric field at frequencies ranging from 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz

The d. c. component of birefringence of aqueous carboxymethylcellulose (CMC) under an a. c. electric field was measured at frequencies ranging from 0.1 Hz to 100 kHz. Three samples of different molecular weights were studied with varying degree of neutralization, polymer concentration and added salt concentration. The dispersion curve of birefringence consists of three relaxation bands,A, B andC in order of decreasing frequency. RelaxationB with a negative relaxation strength is ascribed to end-over-end rotation of almost rodlike CMC molecules. RelaxationA with a positive strength is attributed to the relaxation of electrical polarizability along the minor axis of molecule. RelaxationC possesses also a positive strength and is induced by clusters of CMC molecules.Dedicated to Prof. Dr. F. H. Müller.     

Alkenylation of thiophenes at the 2-position with magnesium alkylidene carbenoids

Treatment of magnesium alkylidene carbenoids, generated from 1-chlorovinyl p-tolyl sulfoxides with isopropylmagnesium chloride at −78 °C in toluene, with 2-lithiothiophenes gave 2-alkenylated thiophenes in good to high yields. The intermediate of this reaction was found to be an alkenylmagnesium, which could be trapped with iodoalkanes and ethyl chloroformate. This procedure offers a novel and efficient one-pot synthesis of thiophenes having a disubstituted or a trisubstituted olefin at the 2-position from thiophenes in good yields.     

Synthesis of optically active forms of (E)-6-isopropyl-3,9-dimethyl-5,8-decadienyl acetate,the pheromone of the yellow scale

Highly optically pure enantiomers of (E)-6-isopropyl-3,9-dimethyl-5,8-decadienyl acetate, the sex pheromone of the yellow scale (Aniodiella citrina), were stereoselectively from synthesized from(R)-(+)-citronellic acid. Only the (s)-enantiomer was bioactive.     

Facile oxidative conversion of alcohols to esters using molecular iodine

A simple, efficient, and high-yield procedure for the oxidative conversion of alcohols to various types of esters and ketones, with molecular iodine and potassium carbonate was successfully carried out.     

Diastereoselective allylations of allyl-propargyl hybrid cations: synthesis of conjugated 1,5-dien-7-yne frameworks bearing C(4)-stereogenic centers

[reaction: see text] Chiral C(4)-substituted (E)- or (Z)-1-alkynyl-1-trimethylsilyloxy-2-butene systems provide anti-(Z) or syn-(Z) conjugated dienyne, with a very high level of stereocontrol, on treatment with BF(3).OEt(2) in CH(2)Cl(2) at -50 degrees C in the presence of allyltrimethylsilane. The Cieplak conformation for (E)-substrates and neighboring-group participation for (Z)-substrates are considered to be responsible for the stereochemical consequences.     

Synthesis of racemic and optically active forms of lineatin,the unique tricyclic pheromone of trypodendron lineatum (olivier)

(±) - 33,7 - Trimethyl - 2,9 - dioxatricyclo[3.3.1.0^4,7]nonane 1 and (±) - 3,3,7 - trimethyl - 2,9-dioxatricyclo [4.2.1.0^4,7]nonane 2 were synthesized. The former was shown to be (±)-lineatin, an ambrosia beetle pheromone. A selective synthesis of (±)-lineatin was devised, which was modified to yield the both enantiomers of lineatin via optical resolution of an intermediate.     

Succession of stacking disorder in hard-sphere crystal under gravity by Monte Carlo simulation

We have performed Monte Carlo simulations of hard spheres under gravity. Vertical boundaries are hard walls, which are well separated with each other. On the other hand, the periodic boundary condition is imposed in the horizontal direction. While we previously reported enhancement of crystallinity as well as crystallization due to gravity, we present here the results that demonstrate the succession of a defect. In case that the crystal formed at the bottom of the system includes kinds of stacking disorders for the (0 0 1) growth, twin band structure develops as mediated by a stacking disorder succeeded in the crystal formed in the fluid region which lies on the bottom crystal. In case that the stacking structure along horizontal direction changes from the (1 1 1) stacking to the (0 0 1) stacking, twin band structure in the (0 0 1) stacking region develops as succeeded in the crystal transformed. The twin band structure also becomes large with its upward growth.     

Vacancy ion-exclusion chromatography of aromatic carboxylic acids on a weakly acidic cation-exchange resin

Determination of aromatic carboxylic acids by conventional ion-exclusion chromatography is relatively difficult and methods generally rely on hydrophobic interaction between the solute and the resin. To overcome the difficulties in determining aromatic carboxylic acids a new approach is presented, termed vacancy ion-exclusion chromatography, which is based on use of the sample as mobile phase and an injection of aqueous 10% methanol onto a weakly acidic cation-exchange column (TSKgel OApak-A). Highly sensitive conductivity detection occurred with sharp and well-shaped peaks, leading to very efficient separations. The effects of sulfuric acid concentration added to the mobile phase, flow-rate, and column temperature on the retention volume of tested aromatic carboxylic acids was investigated. Retention times were found to be affected by the concentration of the analytes in the mobile phase and to some extent also by the addition of an organic modifier such as methanol to the injected water sample. Separation of sulfuric acid (SA), naphthalenetetracarboxylic acid (NTCA), phthalic acid (PA) and benzoic acid (BA) was satisfactory using this new approach. Detection limits were 0.66, 0.67, 0.42 and 0.86 microM and detector responses were linear in the range 1-100, 1-80, 2.5-100 and 10-40 microM, for SA, NTCA, PA and BA, respectively. Precision for retention times was 0.36% and for peak areas was 1.5%.     

Unusual nitration of substituted 7-amino-1,8-naphthyridine in the synthesis of compounds with antiplatelet activity

Several 1,8-naphthyridine derivatives have been diazotizated to obtain the corresponding hydroxy derivatives or mixture of hydroxy and hydroxy nitro derivatives. The respective amounts of hydroxy and hydroxy nitro derivatives depends on the nature of the substituents, on their position on the naphthyridine nucleus, on the amount of sodium nitrite and on the reaction temperature. A study of the electronic density of some molecules suggests a possible explanation of the effects induced by the nature of the substituents and of their position. Some of the compounds were tested for their ability to inhibit human platelet aggregation in vitro induced by arachidonic acid. Only compound 26 showed interesting antiplatelet activity.
