Filtration of partially coherent optical radiation by means of multiphonon Bragg diffraction

The filtering properties of three-phonon acousto-optical Bragg diffraction for increasing the degree of coherence of a partially coherent optical field are investigated by the example of multiphonon acousto-optical interaction in a TeO₂ single crystal. Two possible mechanisms of coherent scattering upon the formation of the highest orders are taken into account. It is shown that the three-phonon interaction is more efficient by at least a factor of two than any mode of one-phonon diffraction realized at the same frequency and the same acousto-optical interaction length. The experimental investigation, using partially coherent radiation of a He-Ne laser (λ = 0.63 μm) diffracted from a transverse acoustic wave propagating in a TeO₂ single crystal, on the whole confirmed the basic theoretical foundations.     

New results on efficient crystal extraction of protons from the 70 GeV accelerator at the Institute of High-Energy Physics

A record-high particle extraction efficiency, exceeding 40%, in agreement with theoretical predictions, is achieved using a short (5 mm long) crystal bent by 1.5 mrad. An extracted beam intensity of ∼6×10¹¹ protons per cycle is obtained. This is five to six orders of magnitude higher than previous results. Pis’ma Zh. éksp. Teor. Observation of a Gabay–Toulouse line in Fe0.6Mn0.4Pt3 alloy

It was shown that in the frustrated ferromagnet belonging to the group of structurally ordered Fe_x Mn_1-x Pt₃ alloys the temperature of the transition from the ferromagnetic state to the asperomagnetic state followed a Gabay–Toulouse line. This revised version was published online in July 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Active Microstrip Antenna with a Gunn Diode

Continuous electromagnetic emission from a Gunn diode built in a microstrip log-periodic antenna in the frequency range from 25 to 60 GHz is studied experimentally. The microstrip antenna was located on an insulating substrate with a thickness of about a quarter of the wavelength and with a metallized back side. It is shown that the output radiation power of such an antenna reaches 5 mW, which is over 50% of the power received from similar diodes in the waveguide cavity. The oscillation regime was varied from single-mode to noise-like, depending on the dielectric thickness and could be synchronized by external emission. Such a quasi-optical structure based on a Gunn diode is convenient for summing up powers from individual oscillators in an open resonator and is of great interest for the terahertz frequency band.
