Deuterium substitution effect on proton relaxation times as a direct means for elucidating molecular interaction in solution. An application to 2′,3′-isopropylideneadenosine

Proton T₁ measurement with the Fourier transform method combined with quenching of dipolar coupling through selective deuterium substitution is shown to be a useful method for elucidating intra- and intermolecular interactions in solution, with 2′,3′-isopropylideneadenosine as an example. Average distances between H-8 and ribose protons are determine in combination with carbon-13 T₁ measurement. The method is compared with the nuclear Overhauser effect.     

Phenotyping of erythrocyte acid phosphatase and esterase D by high field strength isoelectric focusing on cellulose acetate membrane

Phenotyping of erythrocyte acid phosphatase (EAP) and esterase D (ESD) by cellulose acetate membrane isoelectric focusing (CAM-IEF) under a nonequilibrium condition is described. In an attempt to improve the method of CAM-IEF, we shortened the electrode distance to provide a higher field strength at a given (low) voltage. Various carrier ampholytes for EAP typing and various chemical separators for ESD typing were also tested. Good separations were obtained after 30 min IEF for EAP typing and 25 min for ESD typing. When applied to blood stains and stored for various periods at room temperature, the stains up to 8 months old could still be phenotyped for EAP and those up to 4 weeks old for ESD. CAM-IEF is suitable for routine forensic work of EAP and ESD phenotyping.     

Kinetic studies of CO2dissociation on supported Ni catalysts

Summary In order to investigate the kinetics of CO₂dissociation on supported nickel catalysts, a novel technique, which can give the surface reaction rate constants with no information on the number of active sites, was developed. It was revealed that CO₂dissociation was more enhanced on TiO₂support than on other metal oxide ones. The activity pattern and activation energies were in good agreement with those obtained by a conventional pulse technique using the number of active sites, suggesting the validity of the present technique for investigating the kinetics of the surface reaction.</o:p>     

Diastereoselective allylations of allyl-propargyl hybrid cations: synthesis of conjugated 1,5-dien-7-yne frameworks bearing C(4)-stereogenic centers

[reaction: see text] Chiral C(4)-substituted (E)- or (Z)-1-alkynyl-1-trimethylsilyloxy-2-butene systems provide anti-(Z) or syn-(Z) conjugated dienyne, with a very high level of stereocontrol, on treatment with BF(3).OEt(2) in CH(2)Cl(2) at -50 degrees C in the presence of allyltrimethylsilane. The Cieplak conformation for (E)-substrates and neighboring-group participation for (Z)-substrates are considered to be responsible for the stereochemical consequences.     

Rotational correlation times of adenosine 5′-monophosphate in solution as deduced from 1H and 13C spin-lattice relaxation times

Rotational correlation times (τ_T) of the 5′-AMP molecule deduced from spin-lattice relaxation times (T₁) of different protons in the molecule agree fairly well with each other in the temperature range of 3.5–74°C. The same is true with τ_T values deduced from ¹³CT₁ values. These results indicate that the internal motions are slow as compared to the overall rotation of the 5′-AMP molecule.     

Super acid-induced Pummerer-type cyclization reaction: improvement in the synthesis of chiral 1,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines

Improved synthesis of four stereoisomeric chiral 1,3-dimethyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinolines (1a, b, ent-1a, b) was achieved via the super acid-induced cyclization of chiral N-[1-methyl-2-(phenylsulfinyl)ethyl]-N-(1-phenylethyl)formamides (4a, b, ent-4a, b) using the Pummerer-type cyclization reaction as a key step. The cyclization leading to the isoquinoline ring proceeded in a quantitative manner when trifluoromethane sulfonic acid (TFSA) was used as the super acid, although Friedel-Crafts-type alkylation of 4-phenylsulfanyl TIQ derivatives (5) with benzene used as the solvent accompanied cyclization to yield the 4-phenyl-TIQs (7). The byproduct (7) was exclusively formed when a large excess amount of TFSA was used.     

Multifold curdlan gel formation by dialysis into aqueous solutions of metal salts

We have found that the dialysis of curdlan dissolved in alkaline solution into aqueous solutions of metal salts yielded multifold gel structures. Aqueous sodium chloride and potassium chloride as well as pure water induced isotropic gels. Aqueous calcium salts induced liquid crystalline gel with refractive index gradient/amorphous gel alternative structure. Aqueous salts of trivalent aluminum and ferric cations induced a rigid liquid crystalline gel, which shrank above a threshold concentration of each salt. On the other hand, Liesegang ring-like pattern was observed with aqueous solutions of mixed salts of calcium chloride and magnesium chloride. The patterns have been classified to discuss the mechanism of forming the variety of structures.     

Carbon dioxide fixation by microalgae photosynthesis using actual flue gas discharged from a boiler

To mitigate CO₂ discharged from thermal power plants, studies on CO₂ fixation by the photosynthesis of microalgae using actual exhaust gas have been carried out. The results are as follows.

Formation and Crystallization Behavior of Gels in the Na2O-SiO2-TiO2-ZrO2 System

SiO₂-TiO₂-ZrO₂ and 5Na₂O·95(SiO₂ + TiO₂ + ZrO₂) gels were synthesized and role of Na₂O in gel formation and crystallization behavior of gels were studied. From Si(OC₂H₅)₄, Ti(iso-OC₃H₇)₄, Zr(n-OC₃H₇)₄ and NaOCH₃ solutions in EtOH without H₂O, transparent and opaque gels were obtained. Opaque bulk gels, rich in TiO₂ or ZrO₂ composition in Na₂O containing SiO₂-TiO₂-ZrO₂ system, contain agglomerated spherical particles of diameter small <10 m, in contrast with opaque gels having large particles <30 m in alkali-free SiO₂-TiO₂-ZrO₂ system. Crystallization temperature (Tc) was measured by DTA on dried gels. Compared with the alkali-free SiO₂-TiO₂-ZrO₂ gels, 5 mol% Na₂O containing gels gave lower Tc in SiO₂ rich compositions and higher in TiO₂ rich or ZrO₂ rich compositions.     

Detection of varicocele by using 99mTc-diethylenetriamine pentaacetic acid human serum albumin (99mTc-DTPA human serum albumin)

In order to detect the varicocele, scrotal scintigraphies by using 99mTc-HSA-D were performed in 14 patients with male infertile or palpable mass in left scrotum on physical examinations. Abnormal pooling of 99mTc-HSA-D, indicative of varicocele lesion, could be found in left scrotum in 9 cases, confirmed surgically or clinically. Compared with 99mTc-HSA, 99mTc-HSA-D was superior in high uptake ratio of varicocele to soft tissue and in nonvisualization of bladder. Thus, 99mTc-HSA-D scrotal scintigraphy seemed to be of a great use to detect the varicocele.
