Standard<Emphasis Type="Italic">SU</Emphasis>(5) supergravity grand unification model and predictions

A review is given of the StandardSU(5) supergravity model. This model has passed an important check regarding unification of the electro-weak and the strong couplings using high precision LEP data. It is shown that for a significant domain of the parameter space the model also satisfies constraints on the SUSY spectrum from CDF and LEP, as well as proton stability and cosmological relic density constraints.     

The algebra of differential operators on the circle and W KP (q)

Radul has recently introduced a map from the Lie algebra of differential operators on the circle of W _n . In this Letter, we extend this map to W _KP ^(q) , a recently introduced one-parameter deformation of W_KP - the second Hamiltonian structure of the KP hierarchy. We use this to give a short proof that W is the algebra of additional symmetries of the KP equation.     

Quality control of201TlCl solution obtained at IPEN-CNEN/SP

The radiopharmaceutical²⁰¹TlCl(thallium-201 chloride) is used in nuclear medicine for myocardial visualization. The solution of²⁰¹TlCl was prepared using²⁰¹Tl obtained by irradiating a natural mercury target with protons from the CV-28 cyclotron installed at IPEN-CNEN/SP. This solution was subjected to different quality control processes required for its use in medicine. Some of these controls concerned the determination of the radionuclidic impurities:²⁰⁰Tl,²⁰²Tl and²⁰³Hg; the chemical identification of²⁰¹Tl⁺; the hydrazine concentration, mercury contamination and the presence of phosphate. Furthermore. the biological distribution in Wistar rats and tests for sterility, pyrogenicity and toxicity were carried out. It was verified that the solution obtained was in the form of thallous chloride. This radiopharmaceutical gave good heart images in animals but due to the high levels of²⁰⁰Tl and²⁰²Tl its use in humans is not possible unless enriched²⁰²Hg is used as target in the irradiation.     

A one-parameter family of hamiltonian structures for the KP hierarchy and a continuous deformation of the nonlinear WKP algebra

The KP hierarchy is hamiltonian relative to a one-parameter family of Poisson structures obtained from a generalized Adler map in the space of formal pseudodifferential symbols with noninteger powers. The resulting W-algebra is a one-parameter deformation of W_KP admitting a central extension for generic values of the parameter, reducing naturally to W _n for special values of the parameter, and contracting to the centrally extended W₁₊, W and further truncations. In the classical limit, all algebras in the one-parameter family are equivalent and isomorphic tow _KP. The reduction induced by setting the spin-one field to zero yields a one-parameter deformation of which contracts to a new nonlinear algebra of the W-type.Address after October 1993: Queen Mary and Westfield College, UK     

Carbyne-fluoro complexes of rhenium. Single-pot synthesis of trans-[ReF(CCH2R)-(Ph2PCH2CH2PPh2)2][BF4]

Treatment of a THF solution of trans-[ReCl(N₂)(dppe)₂] (dppe = Ph₂PCH₂CH₂PPh₂) with a 1-alkyne HCCR (R =^tBu, CO₂Me, CO₂Et, or C₆H₄Me-4), in the presence of Tl[BF₄]/[NH₄][BF₄], under sunlight, affords the corresponding carbyne-fluoro complexes trans-[ReF(CCH₂R)(dppe)₂][BF₄] in an unprecedented single-pot synthesis. Further reaction with [BU₄N]OH leads to the vinylidenefluoro compounds trans-[ReF(=C=CHR)(dppe)₂] (R = CO₂Me, CO₂Et, or C₆H₄Me-4).     

Sol-gel polycondensation of methyltrimethoxysilane in ethanol studied by <Superscript>29</Superscript>Si NMR spectroscopy using a two-step acid/base procedure

Sol-gel polymerization of methyltrimethoxysilane (MTMS) in ethanol using a two-step acid/base catalyzed procedure (B2) is followed by ²⁹Si NMR spectroscopy. Analysis of the structural evolution of the B2 system shows that esterification of monomeric and end silicon species is rate-limited while that of linear and cyclic species is able to reach pseudoequilibrium in the second basic step. Condensation reactivity is reduced with increasing network connectivity, however, to a much less degree under B2 conditions than MTMS polymerization under acidic conditions. Steric effects as well as many other factors are attributed to this trend. The concentration of cyclic and polycyclic species of the B2 system is nearly 3 times lower compared to the acid-catalyzed system. The empirical degree of condensation at the gel point is determined to be 0.88. The effects of cyclization and phase separation on MTMS gelation are discussed for both B2 and acid-catalyzed systems. Based on these results it is believed that MTMS-based gels form for B2 and not acid-catalyzed conditions due to reduced cyclization, rapid hydrolysis and condensation, effective use of functional groups, and effective contribution of branched and polycyclic species as crosslinking points to connect polymeric chains in the B2 system.     

Synthesis and Diels-Alder reaction of a sapphyrin derivative

Sapphyrins participate in Diels-Alder reactions with pentacene affording novel barrelene-fused sapphyrins. The new compounds were synthesized using traditional heating and microwave irradiation conditions. The experiments carried out under microwave irradiation proved cleaner, affording only the monoadduct and in higher yields.     

Kalman filtering of data from first- and second-order kinetics

The Kalman filter algorithm was used to process data obtained in the simultaneous determination of species following first- and second-order kinetics. The performance of the algorithm in the quantification of chemical components from simulated data was assessed, and the influence of various parameters involved was estimated. The algorithm was applied to the resolution of cysteine-ascorbic acid and glutathione-ascorbic acid mixtures where the ascorbic acid followed pseudo first-order kinetics and the amino acids second-order kinetics in the reaction with the copper(II)-neocuproine system. Some features of the determinations (namely, afforded concentration ratios, accuracy and precision) are discussed.
