Determination of kynurenic acid levels in rat brain microdialysis samples and changes in kynurenic acid levels induced by N‐acetylaspartic acid

The levels of kynurenic acid, an endogenous antagonist of α₇ nicotinic acetylcholine and N‐methyl‐D ‐aspartate receptors, were measured in microdialysis samples obtained from the prefrontal cortices of rats using column‐switching high‐performance liquid chromatography with fluorescence detection. When the perfusate was constantly infused at a rate of 1.0 μ/min, the in vitro recovery of kynurenic acid through the dialysis membrane was approximately 20.4%, and the precision was within 1.31%. Endogenous kynurenic acid in the microdialysis sample was clearly detected using column‐switching high‐performance liquid chromatography. As an application study, N‐acetyl‐L ‐aspartic acid, an endogenous metabolite and precursor of N‐acetyl‐L ‐aspartyl‐L ‐glutamic acid, which is an agonist of metabotropic glutamate receptors, was infused for 120 min through the microdialysis probe. The kynurenic acid level significantly increased during the infusion of N‐acetyl‐L ‐aspartic acid, suggesting that kynurenic acid might have some association with N‐acetyl‐L ‐aspartic acid in vivo. Nine new secoiridoid glucosides from Jasminum nudiflorum

Phytochemical study of the leaves of Jasminum nudiflorum has led to the isolation of nine new secoiridoid glucosides, jasnudiflosides F-L (1-7), nudifloside D (8) and isooleoacteoside (9). The structures of these compounds were elucidated on the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence.     

Control of light pulse propagation with only a few cold atoms in a high-finesse microcavity

Propagation of a light pulse through a high-Q optical microcavity containing a few cold atoms (N<10) in its cavity mode is investigated experimentally. With less than ten cold rubidium atoms launched into an optical microcavity, up to 170 ns propagation lead time ("superluminal"), and 440 ns propagation delay time (subluminal) are observed. Comparison of the experimental data with numerical simulations as well as future experiments are discussed.     

Observation of the fast potential change at L-H transition by a heavy-ion-beam probe on JFT-2M

The fast potential change near the separatrix is measured directly at the L-H transition by a heavy-ion-beam probe. The potential changes with two different time scales at the L-H transition triggered by a sawtooth crash: it drops at first with the time scale of 10--100 mus just after the arrival of the heat pulse due to the sawtooth crash. Then, it decreases again at a few 100 mus after the first drop at a time scale of about 200 mus.     

Facile synthesis of chiral glycine using D-glucose as a chiral template

A facile synthetic method of chiral glycine and a new access to chiral acetic acid based on a concept of chirality transfer from glucose are described.     

Electric conductivity of TCNQ salts of ionene polymers containing triethylenediammonium or 4,4′-bipyridilium ring

The ionene polymers were prepared by the Menshutkin reaction of α,ω-dibromoalkane (n) with triethylenediamine (TDA) or 4,4′-bipyridil (BP). Resistivities (p) and activation energies of conduction (E_a) were measured for the polymeric 7,7,8,8-tetracyanoquinodimethan (TCNQ) salts with these ionenes. The correlation between the chemical structure of the ionenes and the conductivity was discussed. In the TDA,n-TCNQ complex salts and the BP,n-TCNQ simple salts the salts of the ionenes containing even numbers of CH₂ groups showed higher conductivities than those of the ionenes containing odd numbers of CH₂ groups. The conductivities determined by the narrower interval between the N⁺ cations of the main chains were measured in the simple salts. In the complex salts the conductivities determined by the larger interval were measured. The conformational change of the matrix ionenes affected the arrangement of the TCNQ molecules. The values of p were 79.7 and 12.5 Ω cm, and the values of E_a were 0.122 and 0.063 eV for TDA,4-TCNQ complex salt and BP,5-TCNQ complex salt, respectively.     

Synthetic macrocyclic ligands. III. Synthesis of a quinone-hydroquinone redox system incorporated with complexing ability toward cations

Two quinones bridged with a polyether chain and the corresponding hydroquinones were synthesized, and their redox reaction and complexations with sodium and potassium ions were observed.
