A new triterpenoid isolated from Lagerstronemia speciosa (L.) Pers

A new triterpenoid along with four known compounds were isolated from the leaves of Lagerstronemia speciosa (L.) PERS. (Lythraceae). On the basis of chemical and spectroscopic evidence, the new compound was established as 3beta,23-dihydroxy-1-oxo-olean-12-en-28-oic acid.     

Chiral ligand-controlled catalytic asymmetric epoxidation of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with peroxide

Asymmetric epoxidation reaction of α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds with alkylperoxide was catalyzed by an external chiral tridentate aminodiether-lithium peroxide giving epoxides with good enantiomeric excess. Slow addition of alkylhydroperoxide was beneficial for a catalytic asymmetric reaction. Lone pair electron-differentiating coordination of a carbonyl oxygen to lithium is another critical factor for high enantioselectivity.     

Mutagenicity of steviol and its oxidative derivatives in Salmonella typhimurium TM677

Stevioside is natural non-caloric sweetner isolated from Stevia rebaudiana BERTONI, which has been used as a non-caloric sugar substitute in Japan. Pezzuto et al. demonstrated that steviol shows a dose-dependent positive response in forward mutation assay using Salmonella typhimurium TM677 in the presence of metabolic activation system (Aroclor induced rat liver S9 fraction). Our studies were carried out to identify the genuine mutagenic active substance from among the eight steviol derivatives. Steviol indicate almost similar levels of mutagenicity under the presence of S9 mixture, as reported by Pezzuto et al. 15-Oxo-steviol was found to be mutagenic at the one tenth the level of steviol itself under the presence of S9 mixture. Interestingly, specific mutagenicity of the lactone derivative under the presence of S9 mixture was ten times lower than that of the lactone derivative without the addition of S9 mixture.     

Photoinduced Formation of an Azobenzene‐Based CD‐Active Supramolecular Cyclic Dimer

A series of new photo‐responsive amino acid‐derived azobenzenedicarboxylic acid derivatives (S)‐ 1 a – e were synthesized. Compound (S)‐ 1 a in the trans form exhibited no circular dichroism (CD) signal in DMF under ambient conditions, whereas intense Cotton effects were observed upon UV irradiation, indicating the formation of a chiral supramolecular structure in the cis form. The CD signals disappeared when trifluoroacetic acid (TFA) was added to the solution. The ester counterpart [(S)‐ 1 a′ ] showed no CD signal. Hydrogen bonding between the carboxy groups seemed necessary for constructing the supramolecular structure. The kinetic studies of cis to trans isomerization of (S)‐ 1 a demonstrated that the formation of a chiral supramolecule enhances the stability of the cis‐azobenzene structure. The ESI mass spectrum of stilbenedicarboxylic acid (S)‐ 4 , an analogue of (S)‐ 1 b , confirmed the formation of a dimer. A theoretical CD study revealed that (S)‐ 1 a in the cis form should be present as a cyclic chiral dimer.     

A validated HPLC‐fluorescence method with a semi‐micro column for routine determination of homocysteine,cysteine and cysteamine,and the relation between the thiol derivatives in normal human plasma

A semi‐micro column HPLC‐fluorescence method for routine determination of thiol derivatives such as homocysteine (Hcy), cysteine (Cys) and cysteamine (CA) is described. The thiol derivatives labeled with ammonium‐7‐fluorobenzo‐2‐oxa‐1,3‐diazole‐4‐sulfonate (SBD‐F) were isocratically separated within 12 min on a semi‐micro ODS column (Daisopak‐SP‐120‐5‐ODS‐BP) with a mixture of 25 mm acetate buffer (pH 2.00) and CH₃CN as a mobile phase. The purity and similarity of SBD‐thiols by a multi‐wavelength fluorescence detector were more than 92.3 and 96.7%. The detection limits of Hcy, Cys and CA at a signal‐to‐noise ratio of 3 were 0.16, 0.47 and 0.03 µm , respectively. Furthermore validation parameters such as accuracy, precision and robustness of the proposed method showed satisfactory results. Almost 850 plasma sample injections (range 572–1076, n = 3) for a column could be performed without differences in retention time and peak heights of labels. As an application of the proposed method, the determination of thiol derivatives in normal human plasma (n = 103) was demonstrated. The correlation coefficients between Hcy vs Cys and Hcy vs CA were 0.38 and −0.35, respectively. Copyright © 2009 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

Sum-frequency vibrational spectroscopy of a monolayer self-assembled on gold: interference between resonant and nonresonant contributions of nonlinear polarization

zzz ^(R) is dominant in the observed resonant signals, whereas all of the ijk components contribute to the nonresonant signal. The transition frequencies and the relative amplitude of resonant signals are also determined for the CH₃ vibrational modes of ODT on gold. Investigation of Novel Peptide Chiral Selectors Prepared by Solid-Phase Synthesis with a tert-Butoxycarbonyl Amino Acid

A new class of chiral stationary phases (CSP) with peptide chiral selectors was prepared by solid-phase synthesis with a tert-butoxycarbonyl-L-amino acid on silica. The type of amino acid that is favorable for this class of CSP is discussed. Using the CSP with the phenylalanine peptide selector, the effect of peptide length on the enantioselectivity was investigated in normal-phase mode. The applicability of the CSP with a phenylalanine peptide to chiral ligand-exchange chromatography was also examined.
