Highly regioselective nucleophilic carbon-carbon bond formation on furans and thiophenes initiated by pummerer-type reaction

[reaction: see text] The reactions of (phenylsulfinyl)furans or -thiophenes with carbon nucleophiles in the presence of trifluoroacetic anhydride allowed the nucleophilic installation of carbon functional groups on the furan and thiophene nuclei with complete regioselectivity.     

Separation of thiosulfate and the polythionates in gold thiosulfate leach solutions by capillary electrophoresis

A technique for the separation of thiosulfate (S(2)O(3) (2-)), polythionates (S(x)O(6) (2-), x = 3 to 5) and the gold(I) thiosulfate complex (Au(S(2)O(3))(2) (3-)) using capillary electrophoresis with simultaneous UV detection at 195 and 214 nm is presented. The five species were separated in under 3 min with a total analysis time of 8 min, using an electrolyte containing 25 mM 2,2-bis(hydroxymethyl)-2,2',2"-nitrilotriethanol (bis-tris) adjusted to pH 6.0 with sulfuric acid and an applied voltage of -30 kV. While the gold(I) thiosulfate complex could be separated from the other analytes of interest under these conditions, the quantification of this complex was not possible due to inconsistent peak areas and peak splitting effects induced by the sulfur-oxygen species in the leach matrix. Detection limits calculated for 3s pressure injection at 50 mbar ranged between 0.5-2 microM. The method was linear over the ranges 40-8000, 10-2000, 10-2000, and 5-2000 microM for thiosulfate, trithionate, tetrathionate, and pentathionate, respectively. The technique was applied successfully to leach liquors containing 0.5 M ammonium thiosulfate, 2 M ammonia, 0.05 M copper sulfate and 20% w/v gold ore, diluted 1:100 prior to analysis.     

Capillary gas chromatography of lower aliphatic C2?C5 aldehydes in the free form as a group of pungent odorants in air

The capillary gas chromatography of the C₂-C₅ lower aliphatic aldehydes (e.g.,acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, n- and i-butyraldehydes, n- and i-valeraldehydes) which, in the free form in air, have unpleasant odors and low threshold odor values, has been studied using cold-trap preconcentration with liquid oxygen. The capillary column outlet was connected to enable simultaneous detection by FID, ECD, FPD AND FTD (SID).     

Formal total synthesis of hemibrevetoxin B by a convergent strategy

Concise construction of the trans-fused 7/7/6/6 tetracyclic ether part of hemibrevetoxin B (1) was achieved by a convergent strategy based on coupling reaction of an acyl anion equivalent, reductive cyclization of an α,ε-dihydroxyketone, and introduction of a methyl group at the central ring junction by the Nicolaou method. The resultant tetracyclic ether was transformed into the known intermediate, which was already converted to 1 by the Yamamoto group, thereby completing the formal total synthesis of 1.     

Highly sensitive determination of a polymeric hindered amine light stabilizer in polypropylene by reactive thermal desorption-gas chromatography using nitrogen-specific detection

Highly sensitive and specific determination of trace amounts of a polymeric hindered amine light stabilizer (HALS) in polypropylene (PP) materials could be established by improving reactive thermal desorption-gas chromatography (RTD-GC) in the presence of an organic alkali, tetramethylammonium hydroxide. By using nitrogen-phosphorus detection, highly selective detection of the HALS-related components was attained. In addition, the use of a polar poly(ethylene glycol) separation column alleviated the adsorption of minor specific pyrolysis products. This modified RTD-GC method allowed the determination of the polymeric HALS (Mr 1900) in PP even for trace concentrations between 100 and 500 ppm, through observing selectively the characteristic products containing a tetramethylpiperidine moiety, which had been impossible to detect under the previous RTD-GC conditions using a non-polar separation column and conventional flame ionization detection.     

Computer-aided structure elucidation methods

Computer-aided structure elucidation methodology is discussed. Major processes involved in computer-aided structure elucidation systems are partial-structure elucidation, structure generation, and structure examination. For the three representative systems CONGEN, CASE, and CHEMICS, these processes are examined. There are four necessary conditions for automated chemical structure elucidation systems: reliability, width of application, ease of modification and portability.     

Solvent extraction of permanganates (Na, K) by 18-crown-6 ether from water into 1,2-dichloroethane: elucidation of an extraction equilibrium based on component equilibria

Ion-pair formation constants (K_MLA mol⁻¹ dm³) of Na⁺– and K⁺–18-crown-6 ether (18C6) complexes with MnO₄⁻ in water (w) were determined potentiometrically at 25 °C. Simultaneously, extraction constants (K_ex mol⁻² dm⁶) of the permanganates with 18C6 from w into 1,2-dichloroethane at 25 °C were obtained from the spectrophotometric determination of distribution ratios of the permanganates. These K_ex values were divided into K_MLA and other three component equilibrium constants and thereby extraction-selectivity and -ability were discussed in comparison with corresponding metal picrate–18C6 extraction systems reported before.     

Development of a regenerable cell culture system that senses and releases dead cells

We developed a rapidly regenerable cell culture system in which the cell culture substrate detects cell death and selectively releases the dead cells. This culture material was achieved by combining a detector that responds to the signal from the dead cells and an actuator to release the dead cells. Benzo-18-crown-6-acrylamide (BCAm) with a pendant crown ether receptor was used as the sensor to recognize cellular signals and N-isopropylacrylamide (NIPAM) was used as the actuator. This copolymer of NIPAM and BCAm can respond to potassium ions and change its nature from hydrophobic to hydrophilic at the culture temperature of 37 degrees C. Living cells concentrate potassium ion internally; when cells die, potassium ions are released. The polymer surface recognizes the potassium ions released from the dead cells, the NIPAM hydrates, and the dead cells are selectively detached. This in vitro culture system is a novel one in which artificial culture materials work cooperatively with cellular metabolism by responding to this signal from the cells, thereby realizing in vitro tissue regeneration partly mimicking the mechanisms of in vivo homeostasis.     

Synthesis of [1]benzopyrano[2,3,4-kl]acridin-3-ol and its analogues as pentacyclic compounds

A new heterocyclic compound, [1]benzopyrano[2,3,4-kl]acridin-3-ol was synthesized by cyclization of xanthone derivatives. The key compound, 1-(3'-methoxyanilino)-xanthone, was prepared from 1-aminoxanthone. [1]benzopyrano[2,3,4-kl]acridin-3-ol analogues, [1]benzothiopyrano[2,3,4-kl]acridin-3-ol, pyrido[3',2':5,6]pyrano[2,3,4-kl]acridin-3-ol and pyrido[3',2':5,6]thiopyrano[2,3,4-kl]acridin-3-ol were synthesized by the same method.
