Synthesis of optically active forms of seudenol,the pheromone of douglas fir beetle

(R)-(+)-Seudenol (3-methylcyclohex-2-en-1-ol) and its antipode were synthesized from optically active forms of 3-iodocyclohex-2-en-1-ol by treatment with Me₂CuLi. Their absolute configurations were determined by converting (+)-3-iodocyclohex-2-en-1-ol to the known (R)-(+)-cyclohex-2-en-1-ol.     

Specific interaction between polyethylenimine and azo dyes carrying hydroxyl groups

The binding of acid azo dyes having phenolic hydroxyl groups such as orange I ( I ), orange II ( II ), chrome violet ( III ), 4-hydroxyazobenzene-4′-sulfonate ( IV ), and 2,4-dihydroxyazobenzene-4′-sulfonate ( V ) by polyethylenimine was studied by equilibrium dialysis and spectroscopic methods. The results obtained indicate that dyes ( III ) and ( V ) with two OH groups are bound much more strongly than dyes ( I ), ( II ), and ( IV ) with one OH group. Also polyethylenimine is far superior to any other polymers which have been examined, including bovine serum albumin, polyvinylpyrrolidone, and poly-L -lysine, in its ability to form complexes with these dyes ( III ) and ( V ). The OH groups involved participate preferentially in complex formation with polyethylenimine. The unusual affinity of polyethylenimine for the dyes carrying OH groups is discussed.     

Asymmetric cyclization of 2-alkenylphenols. A comparative study on the use of palladium(II) and titanium(IV) complexes

The oxidative cyclization of 2-(3-pentenyl)phenol catalyzed by [(η³-pinene)PdOAc]₂ gives optically active (+)-2-vinylchroman (25% e.e.), while (−)-2-(1-hydroxyethyl)chroman (56% e.e.) is formed as a single diastereomer upon treatment with t-BuOOH in the presence of Ti(OⁱPr)₄ and -(+)-diethyl tartrate. 2-(2-Butenyl)phenol also undergoes the Ti-promoted asymmetric cyclization to give (2S,1′R)-(−)-2-(1-hydroxyethyl)-2,3-dihydrobenzofuran (29% e.e.).     

Thermody namic functions of 1,2-alkanediols in dilute aqueous solutions

The heat capacities of binary aqueous solutions of 1,2-ethanediol, 1,2-propanediol and 1,2-butanediol were measured at temperatures ranging from 283.15 to 338.15 K by differential scanning calorimetry. The partial molar heat capacities at the infinite dilution were then calculated for the respective alkanediols. For 1,2-ethanediol or 1,2-propanediol, the partial molar heat capacities at the infinite dilution of increased with increasing temperature. In contrast, the partial molar heat capacities of 1,2-butanediol at the infinite dilution decreased with increasing temperature. Heat capacity changes by dissolution of the alkanediols were also determined. Heat capacity changes caused by the dissolution of 1,2-ethanediol or 1,2-propanediol were increase with increasing temperature. On the other hand, heat capacity changes caused by the dissolution of 1,2-butanediol are decrease with increasing temperature. Thus our results indicated that the structural changes of water caused by the dissolution of 1,2-butanediol differed from that of the two other alkanediols. Three novel diepoxy tetrahydrochromones from agarwood artificially produced by intentional wounding

Three novel diepoxy tetrahydrochromones, oxidoagarochromones A (1), B (2), and C (3), were isolated from agarwood artificially produced by intentional wounding of Aquilaria crassna. Inductive production of these compounds was also confirmed at the early stage of wounding in A. sinensis and A. crassna. These diepoxy tetrahydrochromones would play an important role in understanding the biosynthesis of chromone derivatives in agarwood.     

Stereoselective adduct formation of α-acylcamphorato-copper(II) chelates with some chiral Lewis bases

The formation constants of the mono-adducts of α-acylcamphorato-copper(II) chelates such as (+)-Cu(facam)₂, (?)-Cu(facam)₂, (+)-Cu(hfbc)₂ and (?)-Cu(hfbc)₂ with some chiral Lewis bases were determined spectrophotometrically in benzene. In order to compare the adduct formation constants obtained with the (+)- and (?)-forms, some pairs of chiral Lewis bases such as 1-amino-2-propanol [(R)(?), (S)(+)], 1-(α-naphthyl)ethylamine [(R)(+), (S)(?)], α-phenyl ethylamine [(R)(+), (S)(?)] and also quinine and quinidine were examined as neutral ligands. Although not very pronounced, the effects of combinations obtained for (+)- or (?)-Cu(II) chelates and (+)- or (?)-ligands indicate that formation constants obtained by the formation of adducts with the ligands having different directions of the optical rotation seems to be superior to those with the same direction.     

Total synthesis of (+)-tubelactomicin A. 2. Synthesis of the upper-half segment and completion of the total synthesis

[reaction: see text]. We have completed the total synthesis of natural (+)-tubelactomicin A (1), a 16-membered macrolide antibiotic. This Letter presents a highly efficient synthesis of the upper-half segment (C14-C24) and the completion of the total synthesis featuring a high-yielding Stille coupling for the connection of the upper-half and lower-half segments and Mukaiyama macrolactonization for the construction of the entire structure of 1.     

Enantioselective Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction promoted by a heterobimetallic complex with a Lewis base

A new double-activation catalysis is presented for the Morita-Baylis-Hillman (MBH) reaction of an α,β-unsaturated ketone and an aldehyde by the combined use of a heterobimetallic asymmetric complex and tributylphosphine ((n-Bu)₃P) to afford the α-methylene-β-hydroxy ketone with up to 99% ee.     

Particle size determination by radioisotope x-ray absorptiometry with sedimentation method]

The possibility of radioisotope X-ray absorptiometry to determine the particle size of powder in conjunction with sedimentation was investigated. The experimental accuracy was primarily determined by Cow and X-ray intensity. where Co'=weight concentration of the particle in the suspension w'=(micron/rho)l/(mu/rho)s-rhol/rhos rho; density micron/rho; mass absorption coefficient, suffix l and s indicate dispersion and particle, respectively. The radiosiotopes, Fe-55, Pu-238 and Cd-109 have high w-values over the wide range of the atomic number. However, a source of high micron value such as Fe-55 is not suitable because the optimal X-ray transmission length, Lopt is decided by the expression, micronlLopt approximately 2/(1+C'ow') by using Cd-109 AgKX-ray source, the weight size distribution of particles from the heavy elements such as PbO2 to light elements such as Al2O3 or flyash was determined.     

Solvent free synthesis of polyaniline-clay nanocomposites from mechanochemically intercalated anilinium fluoride

Nanocomposites consisting of conducting polyaniline and clay minerals were successfully synthesized from mechanochemically intercalated anilinium fluoride; the nanocomposites prepared by the mechanochemical intercalation method contained much more polyaniline in the clay layers than those prepared by a conventional solution method.
