High-performance computing and visualization of unsteady turbulent flows

The history of high-performance computing in turbulent flows is reviewed and their recent topics in industrial use are addressed. Special attention is paid to the validity of the method in flow visualization, and three-dimensional unsteady simulation is focused. Seemingly fundamental CFD technique for 3-D turbulence simulation has been well developed recently, but its practical use as an industrial tool has not yet become popular. An effort to close a wide gap between fundamental and practical use of scientific computer simulation is introduced through the national project promoting computational science and its development in industries of the next generation.     

Hole transport in polymers of (N-ethylcarbazol-3-yl) methyl acrylate and methacrylate

(N-Ethylcarbazol-3-yl)methyl acrylate and methacrylate were polymerized anionically and radically. Anionically-polymerized polyacrylate using ethylmagnesium chloride-benzalacetophenone as catalyst is an isotactic rich polymer with 85% isotactic dyad. All polymers except anionically polymerized polymethacrylate showed good film forming property. Hole drift mobilities measured by the time-of-flight method at room temperature and at 5 × 10⁵ V/cm are in the following order: isotactic polyacrylate (1.0 × 10^-5 cm²/V s) > atactic polyacrylate (1.8 × 10^-6 cm²/V s) > atactic polymethacrylate (1.2 × 10^-6 cm²/V s) at 5 × 10⁵ V/cm. These results are discussed in terms of the hopping model between localized sites.     

Preparation of soluble and fusible poly(2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene)

Poly(2,5-dimethoxy-1,4-phenylene) was prepared by oxidative polymerization of p-dimethoxybenzene with aluminum chloride and copper(II) chloride in nitrobenzene under reduced pressure. The polymers obtained were soluble in sulfuric acid and fusible at 320°C. The intrinsic viscosity of the polymer was ca. 0.07 in sulfuric acid. Demethylation of methoxy groups did not occur during the polymerization.     

Image reconstruction by using the propagation law of mutual intensity

An imaging method for partially coherent objects is proposed by the aid of the propagation law of mutual intensity, and it can be reduced to principles used in holography and radio astronomy if the coherence reaches the both extremes, i.e., perfect coherence and complete incoherence, respectively.     

Anomalous magnetoresistivity of bismuth with dilute ionized impurities in quantizing magnetic field

Transverse magnetoconductivity tensor components have been measured in dilute Bi:Sn and Bi:Te alloys up to magnetic field/temperature = 13T / 0.5 K and compared with those of high purity sample. As was expected, perfect phase inversion and enhancement of the quantum oscillation of the magnetoresistivity component were observed. It was also found that peaks of Hall resistivity tensor component due to the hole Fermi surface in the highest magnetic field region revealed dispersion-type line shape in Bi:Sn alloy in contrast to those in Bi:Te alloy or in pure Bi, which may be ascribed to the difference between the screening of anions and that of cations by electrons and holes in these semimetals.     

On the Absence of Non-Periodic Ground States for the Antiferromagnetic XXZ Model

We prove that the antiferromagnetic XXZ model with Ising-like anisotropy on a one-dimensional lattice does not have non-periodic ground states.     

Possible one-dimensional 3He quantum fluid formed in nanopores

Heat capacity measurements have been made down to 5 mK for 3He fluid films adsorbed in one-dimensional (1D) nanometer-scale pores, 28 A in diameter, preplated with 4He of 1.47 atomic layers. At low 3He density, the heat capacity shows a density-dependent, Schottky-like peak near 150 mK asymptoting to the value corresponding to a 2D Boltzmann gas at high temperatures. The peak behavior is attributed to the crossover from a 2D gas to a 1D state at low temperatures. The degenerate state of the 1D 3He fluid is indicated by a predominantly linear temperature dependence below about 30 mK.     

Synthesis of silyl aziridines and alpha-amino acylsilanes with silyldibromomethyllithium

The reaction of silyldibromomethyllithium with aromatic imines provides alpha-amino acylsilanes via a bromo aziridine intermediate upon quenching the reaction with water. Alternatively, treatment of the bromo aziridine intermediate with various Grignard reagents or lithium aluminum hydride permits the nucleophilic displacement of the halogen to furnish substituted silyl aziridines.     

Nature of the well screened state in hard X-ray Mn 2p core-level photoemission measurements of La1-xSrxMnO3 films

Using hard x-ray (HX; hnu=5.95 keV) synchrotron photoemission spectroscopy (PES), we study the intrinsic electronic structure of La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (LSMO) thin films. Comparison of Mn 2p core-levels with soft x-ray (SX; hnu approximately 1000 eV) PES shows a clear additional well-screened feature only in HX PES. Takeoff-angle dependent data indicate its bulk (> or =20 A) character. The doping and temperature dependence track the ferromagnetism and metallicity of the LSMO series. Cluster model calculations including charge transfer from doping-induced states show good agreement, confirming this picture of bulk properties reflected in Mn 2p core-levels using HX PES.
