In situ STM imaging of surface dissolution and rearrangement of a Pt-Fe alloy electrocatalyst in electrolyte solution

The formation of a Pt skin layer with predominantly (111)-oriented facets induced by dissolution of Fe atoms in a Pt-Fe alloy for fuel cell applications is investigated for the first time by using in situ electrochemical STM in 0.1 M HClO4 solution.     

Novel thermal reaction of Fischer carbene complexes with imines: synthesis of beta-methoxy allylic amine derivatives

[formula: see text] Alkyl-substituted chromium Fischer carbene complexes were found to react with various N-tosylimines to give beta-methoxy allylic amine derivatives under thermal conditions. This result is essentially distinct from the photochemical outcome in which beta-lactam derivatives are obtained.     

Resonance Raman effect in thiourea

Raman spectra of thiourea have been observed in H₂O and D₂O solutions with the exciting laser beams of 514.5, 488.0, 457.9, 363.8, 325.0, and 257.3 nm. The resonance Raman excitation profile of the 729-cm^?1 line has been examined in the region of the 237-nm absorption band ($\text{π}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>CS</mtext>}}{}^1\text{← π}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>CS</mtext>}}$) by use of a solvent shift of the absorption band instead of by changing the wavelength of the exciting beam. The depolarization degree of this line was measured and its overtone Raman line was also observed. On the basis of the results of these experiments, it has been concluded that the 729-cm^?1 Raman line, assignable to the CS stretching vibration, derives its intensity solely from the 237-nm band when it is excited at 257.3 or 325.0 nm. On exciting in the region 363.8–514.5 nm, however, contributions of the higher-frequency bands are predominant rather than the contribution from the 237-nm band. The Raman line at 1520 cm^?1 of thiourea-d₄ is assignable to the NCN antisymmetric stretching vibration. From its excitation profile, its intensity has been considered to come from a vibronic coupling between the excited electronic states of the 220-nm ($\text{π}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>CS</mtext>}}{}^1\text{← π}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>N</mtext>}}\text{? π}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>N</mtext>}}$) and the 197-nm ($\text{π}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>CS</mtext>}}{}^1\text{← π}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>N</mtext>}}\text{+ π}{}_{\mathrm{<mtext>N</mtext>}}$) bands.     

Apparent clustering of intermediate-redshift galaxies as a probe of dark energy

We show that the apparent redshift-space clustering of galaxies in the redshift range of 0.2-0.4 provides surprisingly useful constraints on dark-energy components in the Universe, because of the right balance between the density of objects and the survey depth. We apply Fisher matrix analysis to the luminous red galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, as a concrete example. Possible degeneracies in the evolution of the equation of state and the other cosmological parameters are clarified.     

Pneumatic handling of droplets on-demand on a microfluidic device for seamless processing of reaction and electrophoretic separation

Sequential operations of pre-separation reaction process by picoliter droplets and following electrophoretic separation process were realized in a single microfluidic device with pneumatic handling of liquid. The developed device consists of a fluidic chip made of PDMS, an electrode substrate, and a temperature control substrate on which thin film heater/sensor structures are fabricated. Liquid handling, including introduction of liquid samples, droplet generation, and merging of droplets, was implemented by pneumatic manipulation through microcapillary vent structures, allowing air to pass and stop liquid flow. Since the pneumatic manipulations are conducted in a fully automated manner by using a programmable air pressure control system, the user simply has to load liquid samples on each liquid port of the device. Droplets of 420 pL were generated with an accuracy of ± 2 pL by applying droplet generation pressure in the range of 40-100 kPa. As a demonstration, a binding reaction of a 15 mer ssDNA with a peptide nucleic acid oligomer used as an oligoprobe followed by denaturing electrophoresis to discriminate a single-base substitution was performed within 1.5 min. By exploiting the droplet-on-demand capability of the device, the influence of various factors, such as reaction time, mixing ratio and droplet configurations on the ssDNA-peptide nucleic acid binding reaction in the droplet-based process, was studied toward realization of a rapid detection method to discriminate rapid single-base substitution.

An essential bounded function ? gives a continuous linear functional on the Hardy space H¹ on the bitorus. In this paper, we consider extremal problems on H¹ when ? is a rational function, ? is a product of one variable functions or ? = |f|/f for some outer function f in H¹ such that f(z, w) has a good property with respect to w for a.e. z. Polymerization and photoinitiation behavior in the light-cured dental composite resins

The polymerization behavior and photoinitiation process in the visible light-cured dental composite resins were studied using ESR and IR spectroscopies. The concentration of methacryl propagating radical corresponded to the transmittance of irradiated light. While the radical was stable and long-lived in the cured resin, its concentration quickly decreased in the oral cavity due to the ventilation of atmospheric oxygen accompanied by respiration. Camphorquinone radical in the presence of tertiary amine easily initiated the radical polymerization. A decrease in monomer consumption was explained by the inhibition effect of oxygen in the photoinitiation process. Post-curing by the residual radical proceeded effectively in the deeper part of the resin.
