Cover Picture: A Stepwise Annulation for the Transformation of Cyclic Ketones to Fused 6 and 7‐Membered Cyclic Enimines and Enones (Chin. J. Chem. 4/2019)

The cover picture shows a typical building within the Campus of Xiamen University displaying Chen Jiageng (Tan Kah Kee)'s style. Just like many beautiful buildings designed and constructed by human, Nature “designs and constructs” a huge number of useful molecules with fascinating structures called natural products. Many natural products possess a fused six or seven‐membered carbocyclic unity. On page 315–322, the Huang's group disclosed a three‐step “[2+n]” annulation method for the construction of fused six and seven‐membered carbocyclic enimines and enones. The method starts from simple cyclic ketones and terminal olefinic amides, and relies on both the Suzuki coupling reaction and the olefin‐amide based Friedel‐Crafts type acylating reaction, a method developed by Huang and coworkers.

     

Factors Influencing the Course of the Macrocyclization of α,ω‐Diamines with Esters of α,ω‐Dicarboxylic Acids

The efficient synthesis of eight new macrocyclic amides (lactams) via reaction of diesters with diamines under normal dilution conditions is described. The role of intermolecular H‐bond formation and steric hindrance is discussed based on ¹H‐ and ¹⁵N‐NMR studies of appropriate model compounds. Principles for the optimal choice of esters that can be efficiently transformed into diamides have been developed.     

Synthesis of saccharidic polymer colloids via free radical mini‐emulsion polymerization

Polymer colloids based on 3‐O‐methacryloyl‐1,2:5,6‐di‐O‐isopropylidene‐α‐D ‐glucofuranose (3‐MDG) and butyl acrylate (BA) were prepared via free radical mini‐emulsion polymerization. The kinetic and colloidal features of the copolymerization were investigated. The final particle size (D) of the sugar latexes is inversely proportional to the concentration of the anionic emulsifier (sodium dodecyl sulphate, SDS) and the non‐ionic one (alkyl polyglucoside, APG). It was also found that D is independent of the concentration of either the water‐soluble initiator (potassium persulfate, KPS), or the oil‐soluble initiator (2,2′‐azobisisobutyronitrile, AIBN). The rate of mini‐emulsion polymerization is lower in comparison with the conventional emulsion polymerization under the same conditions. The polymerization rate (R_p) and the total number of particles (N_p) are proportional to the 0.72th and 0.93th power of the SDS, and to the 1.40th and 2.22th of the APG concentration. Following reaction orders, 0.79/0.06 were obtained for R_p/N_p versus the concentration of KPS, and 0.22/?0.01 for AIBN, respectively. Copyright © 2004 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

A novel oligothiophene derivative as a hole‐transport with emitting material for OLED

A novel oligothiophene derivative containing the triphenylamine moiety with high glass transition temperature (T_g; 135 °C), 5,5′‐{bis[4‐di(4‐thiophenyl)amino]phenyl}‐2,2′‐bithiophene (TTPA‐dimer) was synthesized by the dimerization of tris[4‐(2‐thienyl)phenyl]amine (TTPA) with a palladium catalysis. Some types of electroluminescent (EL) devices that use the amorphous material for a hole‐ and an electron‐transporting with an emitting layer were fabricated. These devices emitted a bright green‐yellowish light (λ_emi; around 510 nm) with a small full width at half maximum (FWHM) rather than that of Alq₃. The single layer EL device showed a maximum luminance of 221 cd/m² at 8 V (0.06 lm/W at 100 cd/m²). On the other hand, the double layer (TTPA‐dimer/Alq₃) EL device that used Alq₃ as the electron transport material was increased up to 10830 cd/m² at 12 V (0.89 lm/W at 300 cd/m²) and with a lower turn‐on voltage (3.2 V at 0.1 cd/m²) than other types of EL devices. 窄分布聚丙烯酸-g-聚甲基丙烯酸酯接枝共聚物的合成

利用合成的一种新型原子转移自由基聚合大分子引发剂和从主干接枝的方法制备了窄分布的两亲性接枝共聚物聚丙烯酸-g-聚甲基丙烯酸酯, 并对其结构进行表征. 产物主链和侧链的分子量可分别通过调整单体与引发剂的投料比和反应时间进行控制, 结构规整, 侧链单体适用范围广. 该合成方法不仅推动了接枝共聚物合成研究的进展, 其产物更为两亲性接枝共聚物自组装行为的研究提供了很好的研究对象.     

Synthesis, structure and physical properties of Ru ferrites: BaMRu5O11 (M=Li and Cu) and BaM′2Ru4O11 (M′=Mn, Fe and Co)

The synthesis, structure, and physical properties of five R-type Ru ferrites with chemical formula BaMRu₅O₁₁ (M=Li and Cu) and BaM′₂Ru₄O₁₁ (M′=Mn, Fe and Co) are reported. All the ferrites crystallize in space group P6₃/mmc and consist of layers of edge sharing octahedra interconnected by pairs of face sharing octahedra and isolated trigonal bipyramids. For M=Li and Cu, the ferrites are paramagnetic metals with the M atoms found on the trigonal bipyramid sites exclusively. For M′=Mn, Fe and Co, the ferrites are soft ferromagnetic metals. For M′=Mn, the Mn atoms are mixed randomly with Ru atoms on different sites. The magnetic structure for BaMn₂Ru₄O₁₁ is reported.     

Quecksilber(II)‐chlorid‐ und ‐iodid‐Komplexe von Dithia‐ und Tetrathiakronenethern

Mercury(II) Chloride and Iodide Complexes of Dithia‐ and Tetrathiacrown Ethers The complexes [(HgCl₂)₂((ch)₂30S₄O₆)] ( 1 ), [HgCl₂(mn21S₂O₅)] ( 2 ), [HgCl₂(ch18S₂O₄)] ( 3 ) and [HgI(meb12S₂O₂)]₂[Hg₂I₆] ( 4 ) have been synthesized, characterized and their crystal structures were determined. In [(HgCl₂)₂((ch)₂30S₄O₆)] two HgCl₂ units are discretely bonded within the ligand cavity of the 30‐membered dichinoxaline‐tetrathia‐30‐crown‐10 ((ch)₂30S₄O₆) forming a binuclear complex. HgCl₂ forms 1 : 1 “in‐cavity” complexes with the 21‐membered maleonitrile‐dithia‐21‐crown‐7 (mn21S₂O₅) ligand and the 18‐membered chinoxaline‐dithia‐18‐crown‐6 (ch18S₂O₄) ligand, respectively. The 12‐membered 4‐methyl‐benzo‐dithia‐12‐crown‐4 (meb12S₂O₂) ligand gave with two equivalents HgI₂ the compound [HgI(meb12S₂O₂)]₂[Hg₂I₆]. In the cation [HgI(meb12S₂O₂)]⁺ meb12S₂O₂ forms with the cation HgI⁺ a half‐sandwich complex.     

Activity concentrations of 210Po in the soft parts of cockle (Anadara granosa)at Kuala Selangor, Malaysia

Polonium-210 has been measured in the soft parts of Anadara granosa purchased at Kuala Selangor, West Coast of Malaysia in August 2001, April 2002 and September 2002. It is shown that ²¹⁰Po is non-uniformly distributed within cockles of various sizes (i.e., 2.5, 3.0, 3.5 and 4.0 cm of shell length) and the concentration of ²¹⁰Po in the soft parts of cockle was significantly different (p<0.05) due to sampling date. The highest value was observed in the smallest cockle with a shell length of 2.5 cm (411.6±26.16 Bq/g dry wt.). It is clear that there is an allometric relationship between ²¹⁰Po activity concentration and individual cockle weight. This may reflect on the differences of metabolic rate and growth age of cockles. The mean activity concentration of ²¹⁰Po measured in Kuala Selangor filtered water were 1.75±0.17, 0.79±0.08 and 1.13±0.20 Bq/kg for August 2001, April 2002 and September 2002, respectively. The yield concentration factors for ²¹⁰Po in the soft parts of cockles varies from 27.3^. 10³ to 106.9^. 10³. Silicomolybdate‐Doped PEDOT Modified Electrode: Electrocatalytic Reduction of Bromate and Oxidation of Ascorbic Acid

Electrically conducting poly(3,4‐ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) film doped with silicomolybdate (SiMo₁₂O₄₀^4? or SiMo₁₂) was synthesized by electrochemical polymerization. The synthesized film is capable of fast charge propagation during redox reactions in strong acid medium 0.2 M H₂SO₄ solution. The modified electrode was used towards reduction of bromate and successfully employed as an amperometric sensor for bromate and also above modified electrode was investigated for ascorbic acid oxidation.
