A novel glutaraldehyde cross-linked epoxyaminated chitosan (GA-C-ENCS) prepared through chemical modification was used as an adsorbent for the removal and recovery of Cu(II) from aqueous media. The adsorbent was characterized by FTIR, SEM-EDS, ESR, TG/DTG, BET-surface area and potentiometric titration. The Cu(II) adsorption process, which was pH dependent showed maximum removal at pH 6.0. Adsorption equilibrium was achieved within 3 h. The adsorption of Cu(II) followed a reversible-first-order kinetics. The equilibrium data were evaluated using the Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm models. The best interpretation for the equilibrium data was given by the Dubinin–Radushkevich isotherm. The adsorption capacity of the adsorbent increased from 3.11 to 3.71 mmol g−1 when the temperature was increased from 20 to 50 °C. The complete removal of 20.7 mg L−1 Cu(II) from electroplating industry wastewater was achieved by 0.4 g L−1 GA-C-ENCS. Regeneration experiments were tried for four cycles and the results indicate a capacity loss of <7.0%. 相似文献

Curcumin, with its recent success as an anti-tumor agent, has been attracting researchers from wide ranging fields of physics, chemistry, biology and medicine. The chemical structure of curcumin has two o-methoxy phenols attached symmetrically through α,β-unsaturated β-diketone linker, which also induces keto–enol tautomerism. Due to this, curcumin exhibits many interesting photophysical and photochemical properties. The absorption maximum of curcumin is 408–430 nm in most of the organic solvents, while the emission maximum is very sensitive to the surrounding solvent medium (460–560 nm) and the Stokes’ shift varied from 2000 to 6000 cm−1. The fluorescence quantum yield in most of the solvents is low and reduced significantly in presence of water. The fluorescence lifetime is short (<1 ns) and displayed multi-exponential decay profile. The singlet excited states of curcumin decay by non-radiative processes contributed mainly by intra- and intermolecular proton transfer with very low intersystem crossing efficiency. Polarity, π-bonding nature, hydrogen bond donating and accepting properties of the solvent influence the excited state photophysics of curcumin in a complex manner. The triplet excited states of curcumin absorb at 720 nm and react with oxygen to produce singlet molecular oxygen. The photodegradation of curcumin produces smaller phenols and the photobiological activity of curcumin is due to the generation of reactive oxygen species.Being lipophilic in nature, the water solubility of curcumin could be enhanced upon the addition of surfactants, polymers, cyclodextrins, lipids and proteins. Changes in the absorption and fluorescence properties of curcumin have been found useful to follow its interaction and site of binding in these systems. Curcumin fluorescence could be employed to follow the unfolding pattern and structural changes in proteins. The intracellular curcumin showed more fluorescence in tumor cells than in normal cells and fluorescence spectroscopy could be used to monitor its preferential localization in the membrane of tumor cells. This review, presents the current status of research on the photophysical, photochemical and photobiological processes of curcumin in homogeneous solutions, bio-mimetics and living cells. Based on these studies, the possibility of developing curcumin, as a bimolecular sensitive fluorescent probe is also discussed. 相似文献

Cassia fistula seeds have many therapeutic uses in traditional medicine practice. The present investigation was undertaken to demonstrate the anticandidal activity of the C. fistula seed extract at ultra-structural level through transmission electron microscope (TEM) and scanning electron microscope (SEM) observations. The effect of seed extract on the growth profile of the Candida albicans was examined via time-kill assays and in vivo efficacy of the extract was tested in an animal model. In addition, the anticandidal effect of seed extract was further evaluated by microscopic observations using SEM and TEM to determine any major alterations in the ultrastructure of C. albicans. The complete inhibition of C. albicans growth was shown by C. fistula seed extract at 6.25 mg/mL concentration. The time-kill assay suggested that C. fistula seed extract had completely inhibited the growth of C. albicans and also exhibited prolonged anti-yeast activity. The SEM and TEM observations carried out to distinguish the metamorphosis in the morphology of control and C. fistula seed extract-treated C. albicans cells revealed the notable effect on the outer cell wall and cytoplasmic content of the C. albicans and complete collapse of yeast cell exposed to seed extract at concentration 6.25 mg/mL at 36 h. The in vitro time-kill study performed using the leaf extract at 1/2, 1 or 2 times of the MIC significantly inhibited the yeast growth with a noticeable drop in optical density (OD) of yeast culture, thus confirming the fungicidal effect of the extract on C. albicans. In addition, in vivo antifungal activity studies on candidiasis in mice showed a 6-fold decrease in C. albicans in kidneys and blood samples in the groups of animals treated with the extract (2.5 g/kg body weight). The results suggested that the C. fistula seed extract possessed good anticandidal activity and is a potential candidate for the development of anticandidal agents. 相似文献

The genus Cassia, comprising about 600 species widely distributed worldwide is well known for its diverse biological and pharmacological properties. Cassia spectabilis (sin Senna spectabilis) (DC) Irwin et Barn (Fabaceae) is widely grown as an ornamental plant in tropical and subtropical areas. C. spectabilis has been commonly used in traditional medicine for many years. Information in the biomedical literature has indicated the presence of a variety of medicinally-important chemical constituents in C. spectabilis. Pharmacological studies by various groups of investigators have shown that C. spectabilis possesses significant biological activity, such as antibacterial, antibiofilm, antifungal and antioxidant properties. Beside this, toxicity studies of this plant have revealed no toxic effect on mice. In view of the immense medicinal importance of C. spectabilis, this review aimed at compiling all currently available information on C. spectabilis's botany, phytochemistry, pharmacology, and mechanism of actions, toxicology and its ethnomedicinal uses. 相似文献

Abstract The synthesis of a series of 2-(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)phenyl-based organoselenium compounds, (dmpzC6H4Se)2 (1), dmpzC6H4SeR (dmpz = 3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl; R = (CH2)nY; Y = OH, NH2, and COOH), and dmpzC6H4SeX (X = Cl, Br, or I) is described. The compounds are characterized by IR, NMR (1H, 13C{1H}, 77Se{1H}), and mass spectral (MS) data. The molecular structures of (dmpzC6H4Se)2, dmpzC6H4SeCH2COOH, and dmpzC6H4SeCH2CH2OH have been established by X-ray crystallography. The two latter compounds are associated in the solid state through intermolecular hydrogen bonding between the OH proton and the pyrazolyl nitrogen atom of the adjacent molecule. Glutathione peroxidase (GPx) like catalytic activity of these compounds has been evaluated by using hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) as substrate and dithiothreitol (DTTred) as thiol cofactor in CD3OD, and the progress of the reaction was monitored by 1H NMR spectroscopy. All the compounds exhibited the GPx-like catalytic activity. Among these, the ones containing alkylamino groups showed the best activity. Supplemental materials are available for this article.
