Norm-one projections onto subspaces ofl p

Apparent molar heat capacity and relative enthalpy of aqueous NaOH between 323 and 523K

The apparent molar heat capacity, C _p,, of aqueous NaOH has been measured at temperatures between 50 and 250°C and molalities from 0.05 to 1.5 mol-kg^–1. Enthalpies of dilution L were also determined at 99°C and apparent molar relative enthalpies L were calculated up to 1.9 m. Measurements were performed by means of a flow calorimetric apparatus constructed in our laboratory and standardized for C _p, and L with aqueous Na₂SO₄ and with the formation of water from its ions, respectively. Characteristics and performance of this calorimeter are described in detail. Pitzer's semiempirical equations are used for the representation of the results and a general fitting of C _p, data is reported using also recent literature values measured between 4 and 55°C. The fitted parameters are finally utilized, through an integration procedure, to derive a general equation to calculate L at any temperature between 4 and 250°C.     

Zitterbewegung and gravitational Berry phase

Berry phases mix states of positive and negative energy in the propagation of fermions and bosons in external gravitational and electromagnetic fields and generate Zitterbewegung oscillations. The results are valid in any reference frame and to any order of approximation in the metric deviation.     

Causal loop diagrams as a de-escalation technique

Escalation of commitment, the tendency of decision makers to keep on investing in losing courses of action, has been shown to be a costly decision bias that affects many areas of decision making. Even though escalation is a widely studied phenomenon, there has been comparatively little research on how to avoid this bias. The present study focuses on de-escalation of commitment and proposes that causal loop diagrams (CLDs) can help to decrease escalating commitment to a failing course of action. By means of an experiment, this study shows that using a CLD decreases escalation tendencies.     

Some Properties of GMRES in Hilbert Spaces

Our purpose in this work is to explore the properties of GMRES in Hilbert spaces. We extend to the infinite dimensional context some main results that are known to hold in the finite dimensional case. A key assumption for these extensions is that the involved linear operator is an algebraic operator.     

Can gravity distinguish between Dirac and Majorana neutrinos?

We show that spin-gravity interaction can distinguish between Dirac and Majorana neutrino wave packets propagating in a Lense-Thirring background. Using time-independent perturbation theory and the gravitational phase to generate a perturbation Hamiltonian with spin-gravity coupling, we show that the associated matrix element for the Majorana neutrino differs significantly from its Dirac counterpart. This difference can be demonstrated through significant gravitational corrections to the neutrino oscillation length for a two-flavor system, as shown explicitly for SN 1987A.
