Evaluation of thermodynamic and kinetic stability of CuAlO<Subscript>2</Subscript> and CuGaO<Subscript>2</Subscript>

Thermodynamic and kinetic stabilities of CuAlO₂ and CuGaO₂ have been evaluated by using thermogravimetry and thermodynamic calculations. It has been revealed that CuAlO₂ and CuGaO₂ are not thermodynamically stable in air below 800 °C and 1,200 °C, respectively, and that the oxidation reaction, 4CuMO₂ + O₂ → 2CuO + 2CuM₂O₄ (M = Al, Ga), should occur if the reaction kinetics are high enough. However, rate constants and activation energies indicated slow kinetics of the oxidation reaction, showing kinetic stability of CuMO₂ even under some thermodynamically unstable temperatures and atmospheres. It was also concluded that CuAlO₂ showed higher thermodynamic and kinetic stability than CuGaO₂.     

Synthesis of β‐Methoxyacrylate Natural Products Based on Box‐PdII‐Catalyzed Intermolecular Methoxycarbonylation of Alkynoles

Bis(oxazoline)‐palladium(II) catalyzed carbonylation of homopropargyl alcohols afforded acyclic methoxyacrylate 2 and 6‐membered lactone 3a , 3b , 3d , 3e , 3f , 3g , 3h , 3i , 3j , 3k in good combined yield. In the case of propargyl alcohols, 5‐membered lactones 3p , 3q , 16 were obtained in moderate yields. The one‐pot synthesis of kawa lactones 3a , 3r , 3s and formal synthesis of dihydroxycystothiazole A and dihydroxycystothiazole C are presented. To elucidate the stereochemistry of (+)‐annularin G and (?)‐annularin H, the first asymmetric syntheses of these natural products were achieved.     

Phase-sensitive measurements of order parameters for ultracold atoms through two-particle interferometry

Nontrivial symmetry of order parameters is crucial in some of the most interesting quantum many-body states of ultracold atoms as well as condensed matter systems. Examples in cold atoms include p-wave Feshbach molecules and d-wave paired states of fermions that could be realized in optical lattices in the Hubbard regime. Identifying these states in experiments requires measurements of the relative phase of different components of the entangled pair wave function. We propose and discuss two schemes for such phase-sensitive measurements, based on two-particle interference revealed in atom-atom or atomic density correlations. Our schemes can also be used for relative phase measurements for nontrivial particle-hole order parameters, such as d-density wave order.     

Selection rules for light-induced magnetization of a crystal with threefold symmetry: the case of antiferromagnetic NiO

We propose Raman-induced collinear difference-frequency generation (DFG) as a method to manipulate dynamical magnetization. When a fundamental beam propagates along a threefold rotational axis, this coherent second-order optical process is permitted by angular momentum conservation through the rotational analogue of the umklapp process. As a demonstration, we experimentally obtained polarization properties of collinear magnetic DFG along a [111] axis of a single crystal of antiferromagnetic NiO with micromultidomain structure, which excellently agreed with the theoretical prediction.     

On Fourier–Jacobi expansions of real analytic Eisenstein series of degree 2

We discuss the Fourier–Jacobi expansion of certain vector valued Eisenstein series of degree $2$ , which is also real analytic. We show that its coefficients of index $\pm 1$ can be described by using a generating series of real analytic Jacobi forms. We also describe all the coefficients of general indices in suitable manners. Our method can be applied to study another Fourier series of Saito-Kurokawa type that is associated with a cusp form of one variable and half-integral weight. Then, following the arguments in the holomorphic case, we find that the Fourier series indeed defines a real analytic Siegel modular form of degree 2.

Enantioselective total synthesis of anti HIV-1 active (+)-calanolide A was achieved by a quinine-catalyzed asymmetric intramolecular oxo-Michael addition as a key step.     

Mesoscopic nanomaterials generated by interfering femtosecond laser processing

Mesoscopic nanomaterials with a size ranging from a few nanometers to hundreds of nanometers were generated on a metallic thin film by interfering femtosecond (fs) laser processing. Because the nanomaterials seemed to demonstrate liquid behavior, we named their structure nano water drop. The structure is considerably similar to that of a real water drop observed with a high-speed camera. Using the phase shift between interfering beams, a duplicate structure was generated. This is a new surface modification technique, using a top-down approach.     

Axially chiral dicarboxylic acid catalyzed asymmetric semipinacol rearrangement of cyclic β-hydroxy-α-diazo esters

The development of axially chiral dicarboxylic acid catalyzed desymmetrizing asymmetric semipinacol rearrangement of symmetrically substituted six-membered cyclic β-hydroxy-α-diazo esters is reported as a means to give chiral cycloheptanones with good enantioselectivities.     

Landau levels in a novel two-dimensional electron system interacting with charged quantum dots

Landau levels have been theoretically investigated in a two-dimensional electron gas near a quantum dot (QD) layer. By a diagrammatical method, we have formulated the self-energy for the Landau level and deduced its relation to the AC conductivity σ_loc(ω) in the QD layer. As an example, we have examined the density of states in the case where σ_loc(ω) is described by Aω^S(S=0.8). It is found that the Landau levels are broadened due to the interaction with the localized electrons in the QDs.
