LPE-like growth of YIG ferrimagnetic thin films by pulsed laser ablation with molten droplets

Yttrium iron garnet (YIG) films were grown by pulsed laser ablation (PLA) on (111) Gadolinium Gallium Garnet (GGG) substrates. The second harmonic of YAG laser (532 nm) with a high laser fluence was employed to produce YIG droplets efficiently. It was found that YIG films prepared at RT substrates have a large number of solidified droplets of various sizes. Highly oriented YIG crystals were grown on the (111) GGG substrate heated at 860 °C by PLA using a large number of molten droplets, suggesting an LPE-like growth. This YIG film shows a small ferrimagnetic resonance linewidth of 7.5 Oe. This value is quite small for films prepared by vapor-phase epitaxy techniques.     

New mu-opioid receptor agonists with phenoxyacetic acid moiety

New muq-opioid receptor (MOR) agonists containing 4-hydroxypiperidine, piperidine and piperazine moieties were synthesized and evaluated to find a peripheral opioid analgesic. Among the synthesized compounds, 12-[1-[3-(N,N-dimethylcarbamoyl)-3,3-diphenylpropyl]-4-hydroxypiperidin-4-yl]phenoxy]acetic acid (8: SS620) having phenoxyacetic acid and 4-hydroxypiperidine moieties showed the highest agonist potency on the MOR in an isolated guinea-pig ileum preparation, and it also had selectivity to the human MOR expressed in Chinese hamster ovary (CHO)-K1 cells compared with the same types of delta- and kappa-opioid receptors (DOR and KOR). In addition, compound 8 showed a 10 times more potent MOR agonist activity than loperamide. Furthermore, compound 8 showed a peripheral analgesic activity in vivo screening on rat.     

Three-directional spectral dispersion for smoothing of a laser irradiance profile

In inertial confinement fusion research, uniform laser irradiation on a fusion target is a key issue. We propose a new method of beam smoothing in which we use three-directional spectral dispersion to reduce the coherent speckle that is unavoidable in the usual two-directional spectral-dispersion scheme. We have used this smoothing technique in a Nd:glass laser system and have demonstrated that the coherent speckle is reduced by a factor of 2.9 from that in two-directional spectral dispersion.     

Syntheses, structures and antimicrobial activities of water-soluble silver(I)-oxygen bonding complexes with chiral and racemic camphanic acid (Hca) ligands

Water-soluble, relatively light-stable, chiral and achiral silver(I) complexes [[Ag(2)(ca)(2)]](n) and [[Ag(2)(ca)(2)(Hca)(2)]](n)(R- and S-Hca =(1R,4S)- and (1S,4R)-4,7,7-trimethyl-3-oxo-2-oxabicyclo[2.2.1]heptane-1-carboxylic acid, respectively) prepared from the reaction of Ag(2)O with chiral and racemic Hca in 1:2 and 1:4 molar ratios were characterized by elemental analysis, TG/DTA, FTIR, and solution ((1)H, (13)C and (109)Ag) and solid-state ((13)C) NMR spectroscopy. Crystallography revealed that unique 2(1) helical polymer and zigzag structures were formed on self-assembly of the dimeric units in the crystals of [[Ag(2)(S-ca)(2)]](n) and three [[Ag(2)(ca)(2)(Hca)(2)]](n). In the crystal of [[Ag(2)(S-ca)(2)]](n) two 2(1) helices and a loop were observed in the stair-like polymer structure, whereas zigzag and a loop were seen in the crystals of three [[Ag(2)(ca)(2)(Hca)(2)]](n). Carbon NMR spectra in the solid state and in D(2)O indicated that these polymeric structures were loosely bound and fast ligand-exchange reactions took place in aqueous solution. The complexes, [[Ag(2)(ca)(2)]](n) and [[Ag(2)(ca)(2)(Hca)(2)]](n), showed a wide spectrum of effective antimicrobial activity as anticipated for weak silver(i)-O bonding complexes. Similar antimicrobial activity of [[Ag(2)(ca)(2)]](n) and [[Ag(2)(ca)(2)(Hca)(2)]](n) against selected microorganisms suggested that ligand exchangeability played an important role as well as the coordination geometry of the silver(i) ion.     

Elliptic Apostol sums and their reciprocity laws

We introduce an elliptic analogue of the Apostol sums, which we call elliptic Apostol sums. These sums are defined by means of certain elliptic functions with a complex parameter having positive imaginary part. When , these elliptic Apostol sums represent the well-known Apostol generalized Dedekind sums. Also these elliptic Apostol sums are modular forms in the variable . We obtain a reciprocity law for these sums, which gives rise to new relations between certain modular forms (of one variable).

     

Listening difficulty as a subjective measure for evaluation of speech transmission performance in public spaces

Listening difficulty ratings, using words with high word familiarity, are proposed as a new subjective measure for the evaluation of speech transmission in public spaces to provide realistic and objective results. Two listening tests were performed to examine their validity, compared with intelligibility scores. The tests included a reverberant signal and noise as detrimental sounds. The subject was asked to repeat each word and simultaneously to rate the listening difficulty into one of four categories: (1) not difficult, (2) a little difficult, (3) fairly difficult, and (4) extremely difficult. After the tests, the four categories were reclassified into, not difficult [response (1)] and some level of difficulty, (the other 3 responses). Listening difficulty is defined as the percentage of the total number of responses indicating some level of difficulty [i.e. not (1)]. The results of two listening tests demonstrated that listening difficulty ratings can evaluate speech transmission performance more accurately and sensitively than intelligibility scores for sound fields with higher speech transmission performance.     

An HPLC assay of hydroxyl radicals by the hydroxylation reaction of terephthalic acid

An HPLC assay for hydroxyl radicals is described. The hydroxyl radical was trapped by terephthalic acid (non-fluorescent), and 2-hydroxyl terephthalic acid (fluorescent) was quantitated by HPLC-fluorescence detection. At a terephthalic acid concentration of 4.25 mmol/L, the hydroxyl radical formed in the Fenton reaction was successfully assayed in the concentration range of hydrogen peroxide of 2.5-50 micro mol/L, where the concentration of Fe(II) was 50 micro mol/L. The fluorescence of 2-hydroxy terephthalate was stable at 24 h, and its detection limit by this method was 5 nmol/L (100 fmol).     

Non-destructive analysis of the two subspecies of African elephants, mammoth, hippopotamus, and sperm whale ivories by visible and short-wave near infrared spectroscopy and chemometrics

Visible (VIS) and short-wave near infrared (SW-NIR) spectroscopy was used for non-destructive analysis of ivories. VIS-SW-NIR (500-1000 nm) spectra were measured in situ for five kinds of ivories, that is two subspecies of African elephants, mammoth, hippopotamus, and sperm whale. Chemometrics analyses were carried out for the spectral data from 500 to 1000 nm region. The five kinds of ivories were clearly discriminated from each other on the scores plot of two principal components (PCs) obtained by principal component analysis (PCA). It was noteworthy that the ivories of the two subspecies of African elephants were discriminated by the scores of PC 1. The loadings plot for PC 1 showed that the discrimination relies on the intensity changes in bands due to collagenous proteins and water interacting with proteins. It was found that the scores plot of PC 2 is useful to distinguish between the ivories of the two subspecies of African elephants and the other ivories. We also developed a calibration model that predicted the specific gravity of five kinds of ivories from their VIS-SW-NIR spectral data using partial least squares (PLS)-1 regression. The correlation coefficient and root mean square error of cross validation (RMSECV) of this model were 0.960 and 0.037, respectively.
