A supramolecular cup-and-ball C60-porphyrin conjugate system

In addition to the ammonium-crown ether recognition, pi-stacking interactions between the C60 sphere and the porphyrin moiety have been evidenced in a supramolecular complex obtained from a porphyrin-crown ether conjugate and a fullerene derivative bearing an ammonium unit.     

Molecular tectonics: infinite cationic double stranded helical coordination networks

Upon crystallisation of two bismonodentate tectons based on two pyridine units, interconnected at the meta position by a tetra- or hexa-ethylene glycol fragment and Ag+ cation, double stranded helical infinite coordination networks were formed and structurally characterised. The cationic double helical architectures obtained may be regarded as analogues of DNA in terms of topology.     

Protocol for emergency EPR dosimetry in fingernails

There is an increased need for after-the-fact dosimetry because of the high risk of radiation exposures due to terrorism or accidents. In case of such an event, a method is needed to make measurements of dose in a large number of individuals rapidly and with sufficient accuracy to facilitate effective medical triage. Dosimetry based on EPR measurements of fingernails potentially could be an effective tool for this purpose. This paper presents the first operational protocols for EPR fingernail dosimetry, including guidelines for collection and storage of samples, parameters for EPR measurements, and the method of dose assessment. In a blinded test of this protocol application was carried out on nails freshly sampled and irradiated to 4 and 20 Gy; this protocol gave dose estimates with an error of less than 30%.     

Gome ozone profiles retrieved by neural network techniques: A global validation with lidar measurements

Ozone profiles retrieved from Global Ozone Monitoring Experiment (GOME, flying on ERS-2 satellite) spectra from July 1995 to June 2003 by means of 2 independent neural network (NN) schemes have been validated with ozone lidar measurements performed at different stations belonging to the network for the detection of atmospheric composition changes (NDACC). The retrieval and the whole validation have been carried out by using the performances and resources of the European project Enabling Grid for E-sciencE (EGEE) and of a local Grid at the European Space Research Institute of the European Space Agency (ESRIN/ESA). Roughly 1800 collocated profiles have been found, in tropical, mid-latitude and high-latitude regions; for each lidar station the differences between GOME and lidar profiles have been evaluated and the global performance of the proposed NN approaches has been critically discussed. The results indicate the potentialities for obtaining reliable ozone field analysis on global scale, including detailed altitude resolved trend analysis.     

Adventitious formation of a new oxopentadienyl Mn(I) tricarbonyl complex: Structural study and bonding investigation of (η-CH2C(Fc)CHC(Fc)O)Mn(CO)3

A Mn(I) tricarbonyl complex of a 1,3-diferrocenyl-1-oxopentadienyl ligand was synthesised adventitiously by what seems to be an in-situ aldol-like condensation of two acetylferrocene units promoted by benzyl-Mn(CO)₅. X-ray structural analysis of this unexpected product confirms the η⁵ coordination of the 1,3-diferrocenyl-1-oxopentadienyl ligand to the Mn(CO)₃ moiety. The nature of the metal-ligand bonding relationship was studied by theoretical calculations; it outlines the charge unbalance (polarisation) at the oxopentadienyl moiety as well as the lack of ketone character of the latter Mn-bound ligand.     

Hierarchical structure in polymer‐based drug delivery systems as probed by calorimetric measurements

Thermoporosimetry (TPM), a differential scanning calorimetry technique that relies on the shift of transition temperatures caused by the confinement of liquids, was applied to elucidate the complex morphology of drug‐loaded polymeric microcapsules prepared by the emulsion solvent evaporation method. For the very first time, TPM has been applied simultaneously with two liquids as structural probes. It was found that Miglyol, which dissolves the selected drug (Ibuprofen), is confined inside vesicles having a mean radius of 26.3 nm, whereas water, which is the continuous phase, is trapped inside a swollen polymeric network of Eudragit with an average mesh radius of 1.7 nm. A proposed hierarchical structure is given, which predicts that Eudragit microcapsules are formed from a collection of inert oil vesicles partitioned by polymeric Eudragit membranes swollen by water. © 2010 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Possible use of DFT approaches for the determination of double exchange interactions

DFT calculations are performed on a model mixed-valence system presenting a double exchange phenomenon. Due to the intrinsic multireference character of the lowest Ms components of the spin states, it is shown that the interactions involved in the double-exchange model cannot be simply extracted from the DFT energies as it is sometimes done. It is, however, possible to extract from different DFT single determinant energies the interactions of a generalized Hubbard Hamiltonian, from which, in a second step, the double-exchange spectrum may be evaluated. The problems generated by the charge and spin polarization are discussed in both symmetric and non symmetric geometries, and the sensitivity of the results to the choice of the density functional is illustrated.
