Microwave Activated Solid Support Synthesis of New Antibacterial Quinolones

 A novel synthesis of 6-fluoro-7-(5-aryl-1,3,4-thiadiazol/oxadiazol-2-yl-sulfanyl)-4-quinolone-3-carboxylic acids from 7-chloro-6-fluoro-4-quinolone-3-carboxylic acid and 5-substituted 1,3,4-thiadiazoles/oxadiazoles on basic alumina under microwave activation is described. All compounds were screened for their in vitro antibacterial activity against B. lichenformis, 2689, K. aerogens 2281, S. typhimurium 2501, E. herbicola 2491, and P. vulgaris 2027 and found to possess activities comparable to that of the standard drug norfloxacin.     

Low‐temperature sol–gel transformation of methyl silicon precursors to silica‐based hybrid materials

Six new methyl silicon (IV) precursors of the type [MeSi{ON?C(R)Ar}₃] [when R = Me, Ar = 2‐C₅H₄N ( 1 ), 2‐C₄H₃O ( 2 ) or 2‐C₄H₃S ( 3 ); and when R = H, Ar = 2‐C₅H₄N ( 4 ), 2‐C₄H₃O ( 5 ) or 2‐C₄H₃S ( 6 )] were prepared and structurally characterized by various spectroscopic techniques. Molecular weight measurements and FAB (Fast Atomic Bombardment) mass spectral studies indicated their monomeric nature. ¹H and ¹³C{¹H} NMR spectral studies suggested the oximate ligands to be monodentate in solution, which was confirmed by ²⁹Si{¹H} NMR signals in the region expected for tetra‐coordinated methylsilicon (IV) derivatives. Thermogravimetric analysis of 1 revealed the complex to be thermally labile, decomposing to a hybrid material of definite composition. Two representative compounds ( 2 and 4 ) were studied as single source molecular precursor for low‐temperature transformation to silica‐based hybrid materials using sol–gel technique. Formation of homogenous methyl‐bonded silica materials (MeSiO_3/2) at low sintering temperature was observed. The thermogravimetric analysis of the methylsilica material indicated that silicon‐methyl bond is thermally stable up to a temperature of 400 °C. Reaction of 2 and Al(OPrⁱ)₃ in equimolar ratio in anhydrous toluene yielded a brown‐colored viscous liquid of the composition [MeSi{ON?C(CH₃)C₄H₃O}₃.Al(OPrⁱ)₃]. Spectroscopic techniques ¹H, ¹³C{¹H}, ²⁷Al{¹H} and ²⁹Si{¹H} NMR spectra of the viscous product indicated the presence of tetracoordination around both silicon and aluminum atoms. On hydrolysis it yielded methylated aluminosilicate material with high specific surface area (464 m²/g). Conformally flat tilted Bianchi Type-V cosmological models in general relativity

We have investigated two conformally flat tilted Bianchi Type-V cosmological models in general relativity. To get a determinate solution, we have assumed a supplementary conditionA =B ⁿ between metric potentials wheren is a constant. The behaviour of the model forn = 2 is discussed in detail. Various physical and geometrical aspects of the models are also discussed.     

One pot three component synthesis of spiro [indolo-3,10’-indeno[1,2-b]quinolin]-2,4,11’-triones as a new class of antifungal and antimicrobial agents

A simple and efficient three component procedure has been developed for the synthesis of highly substituted spiro[indolo-3,10'-indeno[1,2-b]quinolin]-2,4,11'-triones by one pot three component condensation of enaminones, isatin and indane-1,3-dione in ethanol:water (1:1) in presence of ceric ammonium nitrate (CAN) as catalyst. This method provides several advantages such as lesser reaction time, high yield of products and operational simplicity. The antimicrobial activity of some of the compounds has been investigated against six microbial strains, some of the tested compounds showed good antimicrobial activity.     

Study of transfer of trace elements from soil to medicinal plants in the environment of Mangalore

The concentration of five trace elements Cr, As, Pb, Rb and Sr in seven medicinal plants Garcinia indica, Ficus benghalensis, Flacartia Montana, Nyctanthes arbor-tristis, Morinda citrifolia, Ficus recemosa, Barringtonia acutangula and associated soils were analyzed using ICP-MS. In plant the elemental concentrations of Cr, Pb, Rb and Sr vary widely and in soil the elemental concentrations of Cr, As and Sr showed wide variation. Selective enrichment of elements Rb and Sr was observed in some plants. The soil to plant transfer ratio was significant for Sr. The results of these systematic investigations are presented and discussed in this paper.     

New approximate analytical expressions for transient concentration profiles and current pertaining to a homogeneous chemical reaction at hemispherical microelectrodes

A mathematical model corresponding to homogeneous chemical reactions under transient chronoamperometry conditions at hemispherical microelectrodes has been developed. The analytical solutions for the concentration of species and current were obtained using Duhamel's theorem. This closed-form theoretical expression pertains to the transient concentration profiles and fluxes of chemical species involved in chemical and electrochemical reactions at hemispherical microelectrodes. As t → ∞, the analytical expressions corresponding to the concentration and current approach steady-state values. The solutions obtained are explicit only under limiting current conditions. The approximate expressions for concentrations and current as functions of time corresponding to the EC' and CE mechanisms at hemispherical microelectrodes are also reported.
