Waveguide arrays as plasmonic metamaterials: transmission below cutoff   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Since the work of Ebbesen et al. [Nature (London) 391, 667 (1998)], there has been immense interest in the optical properties of subwavelength holes in metal layers. While the enhanced transmission observed is generally associated with surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs), theoretical predictions suggest a similar response with perfectly conducting materials. However, Pendry et al. [Science 305, 847 (2004)] proposed that, if textured on a subwavelength scale, even perfect conductors support surface modes. Here, using microwave radiation incident upon an array of metal waveguides, we observe peaks in the transmissivity below cutoff and confirm the crucial role of these SPP-like modes in the mechanism responsible.  相似文献

Total neutron scattering data from a powdered sample of MnO collected at 10 K have been analyzed using the reverse Monte Carlo method to refine the nuclear and magnetic structure. The results give the first unambiguous assignment of the average magnetic structure. The magnetic moments are aligned ferromagnetically within (111) sheets with the magnetization vectors of alternate sheets along axes parallel and antiparallel to the <112> directions, albeit with a small modulated out-of-plane component. Small displacements of Mn and O (modulated with the same periodicity) accompany the magnetic ordering and both atomic and magnetic structures may be described in the monoclinic space group C2.  相似文献

We demonstrate a method to count small numbers of atoms held in a deep, microscopic optical dipole trap by collecting fluorescence from atoms exposed to a standing wave of light that is blue detuned from resonance. While scattering photons, the atoms are cooled by a Sisyphus mechanism that results from the spatial variation in light intensity. The use of a small blue detuning limits the losses due to light-assisted collisions, thereby making the method suitable for counting several atoms in a microscopic volume.  相似文献

Nuclei with long T1s are optimal targets for dynamic nuclear polarization (DNP). Therefore, most of the agents used in metabolic imaging and spectroscopy studies are based on carboxylic acid moieties that lack protons, a strong source of dipolar relaxation. Metabolic flux information encoded into spectra of small molecule metabolites in the form of the 13C isotopomer data cannot be accessed using standard 13C hyperpolarization methods because protonated carbons relax too quickly through T1 dipolar relaxation. It is shown here that the longitudinal mixing sequence FLOPSY-8 can be used to transfer polarization from a long T1 storage nucleus to adjacent protonated carbons so that they may be detected with high sensitivity. We demonstrate that FLOPSY-8 allows a direct readout of isotopomer populations in butyrate and glutamate in vitro.  相似文献

We calculate the local contributions to the Shannon entropy and excess entropy and use these information theoretic measures as quantitative probes of the order arising from quenched disorder in the diluted Ising antiferromagnet on a triangular lattice. When one sublattice is sufficiently diluted, the system undergoes a temperature-driven phase transition, with the other two sublattices developing magnetizations of equal magnitude and opposite sign as the system is cooled.(1) The diluted sublattice has no net magnetization but exhibits spin glass ordering. The distribution of local entropies shows a dramatic broadening at low temperatures; this indicates that the system's total entropy is not shared equally across the lattice. The entropy contributions from some regions exhibit local reentrance, although the entropy of the system decreases monotonically as expected. The average excess entropy shows a sharp peak at the critical temperature, showing that the excess entropy is sensitive to the structural changes that occur as a result of the spin glass ordering.  相似文献

The nanosecond response of a PbTiO(3)/SrTiO(3) ferroelectric/dielectric superlattice to applied electric fields is closely linked to the dynamics of striped domains of the remnant polarization. The intensity of domain satellite reflections observed with time-resolved x-ray microdiffraction decays in 5-100 ns depending on the magnitude of the electric field. The piezoelectric response of the superlattice within stripe domains is strongly suppressed due to electromechanical clamping between adjacent regions of opposite polarization. Regions of the superlattice that have been switched into a uniform polarization state by the applied electric field, however, exhibit piezoelectricity during the course of the switching process. We propose a switching model different from previous models of the switching of superlattices, based instead on a spatially heterogeneous transformation between striped and uniform polarization states.  相似文献

A two-dimensional (2D) infrared spectrum of Mn2(CO)10 is measured by using chirped-pulse upconversion (CPU) of the nonlinear signal field plus a reference local oscillator. By converting the spectrum to the visible, a silicon CCD camera can be used. The method offers an attractive alternative to direct IR detection due to the technological maturity of silicon and its greater intrinsic detectivity over HgCdTe. Using CPU, we acquired a rephasing 2D IR spectrum in a few seconds.  相似文献

Many oscillatory biological systems show periodic travelling waves. These are often modelled using coupled reaction-diffusion equations. However, the effects of different movement rates (diffusion coefficients) of the interacting components on the predictions of these equations are largely unknown. Here we investigate the ways in which varying the diffusion coefficients in such equations alters the wave speed, time period, wavelength, amplitude and stability of periodic wave solutions. We focus on two sets of kinetics that are commonly used in ecological applications: lambda-omega equations, which are the normal form of an oscillatory coupled reaction-diffusion system close to a supercritical Hopf bifurcation, and a standard predator-prey model. Our results show that changing the ratio of the diffusion coefficients can significantly alter the shape of the one-parameter family of periodic travelling wave solutions. The position of the boundary between stable and unstable waves also depends on the ratio of the diffusion coefficients: in all cases, stability changes through an Eckhaus (‘sideband’) instability. These effects are always symmetrical in the two diffusion coefficients for the lambda-omega equations, but are asymmetric in the predator-prey equations, especially when the limit cycle of the kinetics is of large amplitude. In particular, there are two separate regions of stable waves in the travelling wave family for some parameter values in the predator-prey scenario. Our results also show the existence of a one-parameter family of travelling waves, but not necessarily a Hopf bifurcation, for all values of the diffusion coefficients. Simulations of the full partial differential equations reveals that varying the ratio of the diffusion coefficients can significantly change the properties of periodic travelling waves that arise from particular wave generation mechanisms, and our analysis of the travelling wave families assists in the understanding of these effects.  相似文献

Geometric (Clifford) algebra provides an efficient mathematical language for describing physical problems. We formulate general relativity in this language. The resulting formalism combines the efficiency of differential forms with the straightforwardness of coordinate methods. We focus our attention on orthonormal frames and the associated connection bivector, using them to find the Schwarzschild and Kerr solutions, along with a detailed exposition of the Petrov types for the Weyl tensor.  相似文献
