Methods for imaging and analyses of intracellular organelles using fluorescent and luminescent proteins.

One of the important features of eukaryotic cells is the presence of intracellular compartments, organelles. Each organelle plays an essential role in the organelle-specific function; each cooperates with others for maintaining the vital activity of living cells. To analyze the organelle-specific functions, researchers have used many fluorescent and luminescent reporter proteins extensively. The reporter proteins have provided unprecedented insights into the movement of proteins and their interactions in the organelles. In this review, we summarize recently validated methods for visualizing protein localization, dynamics and protein-protein interactions, and for identifying a series of proteins localized in organelles using newly developed reporter proteins.     

Exponential decay of solutions to nonlinear elliptic equations with potentials

Exponential decay estimates are obtained for complex-valued solutions to nonlinear elliptic equations in \mathbbRⁿ ,\mathbb{R}^{n} , where the linear term is given by Schr?dinger operators H =  − Δ  +  V with nonnegative potentials V and the nonlinear term is given by a single power with subcritical Sobolev exponent in the attractive case. We describe specific rates of decay in terms of V, some of which are shown to be optimal. Moreover, our estimates provide a unified understanding of two distinct cases in the available literature, namely, the vanishing potential case V = 0 and the harmonic potential case V(x) = |x|².     

Quantum states of hydrogen (H, D, T) atoms on Cu(1 0 0) and (1 1 0) surfaces

We investigate the quantum mechanical behavior of adsorbed hydrogen (H, D, T) on Cu(1 0 0) and (1 1 0) surfaces. We construct potential energy surfaces (PESs) for the motion of the hydrogen H atom on Cu(1 0 0) and (1 1 0) surfaces within the framework of density functional theory. The potential energy takes a minimum value on the hollow site of Cu(1 0 0) and on the short bridge site of Cu(1 1 0). Moreover, we calculate the quantum states of hydrogen atom motion on these calculated PESs. The ground state wave function of the hydrogen atom motion is strongly localized around the hollow site on the Cu(1 0 0) surface. On the other hand, the ground state wave function of the hydrogen atom motion on Cu(1 1 0) is distributed from the short bridge site to two neighboring pseudo-threefold sites. We finally show isotope effects on the quantum states of the motion of hydrogen on both surfaces.     

Inelastic scattering on 12Be and disappearance of the N = 8 magic number

Experimental studies on in-beam γ-ray spectroscopy using a ¹²Be radioactive beam are presented. Inelastic scattering of the neutron-rich ¹²Be nucleus on ²⁰⁸Pb, ¹²C, and (CH₂)_n targets has been studied by measuring de-excitation γ-rays in coincidence with scattered particles. The level schemes and transition probabilities are determined for low-lying excited states in ¹²Be. The present paper presents a brief review of the spectroscopic results, which may be associated with the N = 8 shell quenching near the drip line. Structural and conformational studies on citreoviridinol and isocitreoviridinol: syntheses of some 2,6-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octanes

Isocitreoviridinol has been newly isolated from the mycelium of $\text{Penicillium citreo-viride}$ B. (IFO 6050) together with citreoviridinol, and their stereostructures have also been elucidated by means of chemical method: the 2,6-dioxabicyclo[3.2.1]octanes have been made, one of which is regarded as a promising synthetic intermediate of citreoviridinol. In addition, isocitreoviridinol diacetate has been derived from citreoviridin in 3 steps.     

Beryllium double K X-ray emission by proton and helium ion bombardment

X-ray spectra from beryllium by proton and helium ion bombardment are studied. A clear peak due to double K-shell ionization is observed at 146.1 eV by helium ion bombardment. For proton bombardment, a peak of double K-shell ionization is not observable.     

The peak of the derivative thermoanalytical curve of diffusion

The conversion, the reduced rate of conversion dC/dΘ andΘ at the peak of derivative thermoanalytical curve of diffusion are estimated theoretically, solving the theoretical equation with an electronic digital computer. These values for chemical reactions including random degradation of polymers are also estimated and compared with those of diffusion. The conversion at the peak is utilized to elucidate preliminarily the mechanism of the process.
