Ellipsometric study of the adsorption of comb-branched polystyrene onto a metal surface

The adsorption of well-characterized comb-branched polystyrene onto a chrome plate from cyclohexane solution at the θ temperature has been studied by ellipsometry. Both the adsorbance of the polymer and the extension of the adsorbed layer are compared with values for the linear polystyrene of the same molecular mass. The adsorbance is higher than that of the linear polystyrene, whereas the extension of the adsorbed layer is smaller, reflecting the higher segment density of the branched polymer. The extension t_b of the branched polymer is given approximately t_b = t_lg, where t_l is the extension of linear polystyrene of the same molecular mass and g is the ratio of the radii of gyration of the branched and linear polymers. The ratio of the adsorbances A_b/A_l of branched and linear polymer is approximately equal to g. These results indicate that the comb-branched polymer is adsorbed as a slightly distorted randam coil with extension and adsorbance governed primarily by the experimental g_s factor.     

Mössbauer spectroscopic study of frozen solutions of57Co using a specially designed cryostat for time differential coincidence emission Mössbauer spectroscopy of237Np

Experiments on the⁵⁷Fe Mössbauer effect in frozen solutions were carried out in order to demonstrate the capabilities of a cryostat which was developed for the emission Mössbauer spectroscopy of²³⁷Np. We confirmed the existence of an aliovalent state of⁵⁷Fe in the temperature range from 5.5 to 35 K. However, the relative amounts of Fe(II) and Fe(III) in the frozen matrix were almost constant for the temperature range from 5.5 to 150 K. The design, operation and capabilities of the cryostat are also described.     

Ferromagnetic resonance in the randomly mixed insulating ferromagnet and antiferromagnet Rb2Mn(1-x)CrxCl4

An electron spin resonance experiment has been performed on the Cr-rich concentrations of the random mixture Rb₂Mn(_1-x)Cr_xCl₄ of an insulating ferromagnet (Rb₂CrCl₄) and an insulating antiferromagnet (Rb₂MnCl₄). The resonance fields in x = 0.6, 0.7 and 0.8 samples begin to shift towards low field side at temperatures well above the Curie temperatures, when the external field is applied in the c-plane of the crystal. The shift of the resonance field with temperature of the x = 0.7 sample agreed well with that of the x = 0.8 sample, after scaling the temperature axis, while the shift in the x = 0.6 crystal did not. From this observation, we argue that the x = 0.7 and x = 0.8 samples have a long-range ordered ferromagnetic phase below T_c, and that the low temperature phase of the x = 0.6 sample is not a truely long-range ordered one. A weak resonance line was observed in the x = 0.8 sample below about 20 K. This resonance is discussed in connection with the re-entrant spin-glass behavior of this mixed system found in the ac susceptibility measurement.

Structures of novel citocydal antibiotics furaquinocins A and B, isolated from the fermentation broth of Streptomyces sp. KO-3988, was elucidated on the basis of spectroscopic analyses.     

Aldehyde and ketone syntheses using methylthiomethyl p-tolyl sulfone

Methylthiomethyl p-tolyl sulfone (1) was conveniently alkylated to give mono- and dialkylated products (2 and 4). Reaction conditions for the trasformation of 2 and 4 into aldehydes (3) and ketones (5), respectively, were exploited.     

β-Lactams via photochemical reaction of monothioimides

Photolysis of acyclic monothioimides gave β-lactams and thioamides via Type II reaction involving γ-hydrogen abstraction by thiocarbonyl group.     

Magnetic field effect on the hydrogen abstraction of xanthone from xanthene in SDS micelles

The magnetic field effect (<800 G) on the hydrogen abstraction of xanthone from xanthene in SDS aqueous micellar solutions was studied using laser flash photolysis. The rate of triplet-singlet intersystem crossing of the radical pair of xanthone ketyl and 9-xanthenyl formed upon photolysis decreases from 1.4 × 10⁶ s^?1 at O G to 0.4 × 10⁶ s^?1 at 640 G.     

Adsorption of silanes bearing nitrogenated Lewis bases on SiO2/Si (100) model surfaces

The present paper describes the one-pot procedure for the formation of self-assembled thin films of two silanes on the model oxidized silicon wafer, SiO2/Si. SiO2/Si is a model system for other surfaces, such as glass, quartz, aerosol, and silica gel. MALDI-TOF MS with and without a matrix, XPS, and AFM have confirmed the formation of self-assembled thin films of both 3-imidazolylpropyltrimethoxysilane (3-IPTS) and 4-(N-propyltriethoxysilane-imino)pyridine (4-PTSIP) on the SiO2/Si surface after 30 min. Longer adsorption times lead to the deposition of nonreacted 3-IPTS precursors and the formation of agglomerates on the 3-IPTS monolayer. The formation of 4-PTSIP self-assembled layers on SiO2/Si is also demonstrated. The present results for the flat SiO2/Si surface can lead to a better understanding of the formation of a stationary phase for affinity chromatography as well as transition-metal-supported catalysts on silica and their relationship with surface roughness and ordering. The 3-IPTS and 4-PTSIP modified SiO2/Si wafers can also be envisaged as possible built-on-silicon thin-layer chromatography (TLC) extraction devices for metal determination or N-heterocycle analytes, such as histidine and histamine, with "on-spot" MALDI-TOF MS detection.     

Catalytic asymmetric conjugate addition of dialkylzinc reagents to beta-aryl-alpha,beta-unsaturated N-2,4,6-triisopropylphenylsulfonylaldimines with use of N-Boc-L-Val-connected amidophosphane-copper(I) catalyst

Asymmetric conjugate addition of dialkylzinc to alpha,beta-unsaturated N-2,4,6-triisopropylphenylsulfonylaldimines 9 was catalyzed by 5 mol % N-Boc-L-valine-connected amidophosphane 5a-Cu(MeCN)(4)BF(4) in the presence of 4 angstroms MS in toluene to afford, after hydrolysis of an imine to an aldehyde through a short alumina column and reduction with sodium borohydride, the corresponding beta-alkylated alkanols 10 with 67-91% ee in reasonably high yields.
