Do intramolecular halogen bonds exist? Ab initio calculations and crystal structures’ evidences

Cl···O intramolecular contacts are analysed here. Hence the Cambridge Structural Database (CSD) search was performed to find five-membered Cl–C=C–C=O pseudo-rings closed through Cl···O intramolecular contacts. Such rings were analysed and it was found that some of Cl···O distances are smaller than the corresponding sum of van der Waals radii. Additionally ab initio MP2/6-311++G(d,p) calculations and AIM analyses were carried out here on 3-chloropropenal and its fluoro derivatives to deepen the nature of intramolecular Cl···O interactions, some of findings may indicate that they are attractive and stabilizing ones. Spectrophotometric determination of dopamine in microliter scale using microfluidic system based on polymeric technology

In this paper we report two simple and sensitive spectrophotometric procedures for the determination of dopamine in microfluidic system based on poly(dimethylsiloxane) (PDMS) technology and comparison of their interference-susceptibility. The analytical reactions and measurements were carried out at ambient temperature in a microreactor of total volume 6 μl coupled with a spectrophotometric flow-through cuvette.     

IR-spectroscopic studies of the interaction of propylene and acrolein with a CoMoO4 catalyst

IR spectra of propylene and acrolein adsorbed at different temperatures on CoMoO₄ supported on MgO were recorded. Four different surface species were found: a -complex, an oxygen bonded carbonyl complex, acrylic acid and a carboxylate type complex. The mechanism of their transoformation is discussed.

Synthesis of alkoxymethyl derivatives of resorcinarene via the Mannich reaction catalysed with iminodiacetic acid

The conditions of a simple synthesis of tetra(alkoxymethyl) derivatives of resorcinarene via the Mannich reaction catalysed with iminodiacetic acid are described. A possibility of high yield synthesis of such derivatives for the selected straight-chain alcohols is shown. A possible mechanism of this reaction is suggested.     

Synthesis of corroles bearing up to three different meso substituents

[reaction: see text] We have developed a new method that affords regioisomerically pure corroles possessing up to three different substituents at the meso positions. The corrole formation reaction involves the acid-catalyzed condensation of a dipyrromethane-dicarbinol with pyrrole followed by oxidation with DDQ. ABC-Type corroles were synthesized for the first time according to this procedure.     

Phase dependent electrochemical properties of polar self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) modified via the fusion of mixed phospholipid vesicles

Unilamellar vesicles of 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine (DMPC) and varying quantities of either 1,2-dimyristoyl-sn-glycero-3-[phospho-rac-(1-glycerol) (sodium salt) (DMPG) or 1,2-dimyristoyl-3-trimethylammonium-propane (chloride salt) (DMTAP) were used to deposit lipid bilayer assemblies on self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) on gold. The supporting SAMs in turn were composed of ferrocene-functionalized hexadecanethiol chains (FcC16SH) diluted to low coverage in 1-hydroxylhexadecanethiol (HOC16SH) or a single-component monolayer phase of the latter. The mass coverages of the DMPC/DMPG layers deposited in this way were measured using surface plasmon resonance (SPR) and found to decrease with an increasing content of DMPG in the vesicles. The SPR data show that the lipid assembly, while stable with respect to gentle rinsing in aqueous buffer, is reversible and the lipid adlayer is removable by immersion in a solvent such as ethanol. The effects of the adsorbed lipid layer on the electrochemical interactions of the hybrid lipid/SAM with several redox probes [e.g., K4Fe(CN)6, Ru(NH3)6Cl3, and CsHsFe-[(C5H4CH2N+H(CH3)2] were characterized using cyclic voltammetry (CV). At a composition of 5% DMPG in DMPC, the permeabilities of the probes through the lipid layer were affected significantly relative to that observed with a pure DMPC layer. These effects include a striking observation of an enhanced, ionic-charge-specific molecular discrimination of the electrochemical probes. At higher concentrations of the DMPG, significant permeation of the lipid adlayer was seen for all the probes. These latter changes are also attended by a significant increase in the capacitive currents measured in CV experiments as compared to those observed for either a pure SAM or one modified by only DMPC. This effect likely results from the influence of the charged lipid on the diffuse Gouy-Chapman electrolyte layer at the SAM interface. In contrast to the behaviors seen with DMPG, the incorporation of DMTAP into the adsorbed DMPC had no impact on the permeation of the adlayer by soluble redox probes as judged by the observed electrochemistry, a result that appears to correlate with a less ideal mixing of lipids in the DMPC/DMTAP system relative to that of a DMPC/DMPG mixture.     

C-H...N and C-H...S hydrogen bonds--influence of hybridization on their strength

Simple complexes connected through C-H...S and C-H...N interactions are investigated: CH4...NH3, C2H4...NH3, C2H2...NH3, CH4...SH2, C2H4...SH2, and C2H2...SH2. Ab initio and DFT calculations are performed (SCF, MP2, B3LYP) using different basis sets up to the MP2/aug-cc-pVQZ//MP2/aug-cc-pVDZ level of approximation. The Bader theory is applied since MP2/6-311++G(d,p) wave functions are used to find and to characterize bond critical points in terms of electron densities and their Laplacians. The influence of hybridization on the properties of C-H...S and C-H...N systems is also studied showing that the strength of such interactions increases in the following order: C(sp3)-H...Y, C(sp2)-H...Y, C(sp)-H...Y, where Y = S, N--it is in line with the previous findings on C-H...O hydrogen bonds. The results also show that CH4...SH2 and C2H4...SH2 complexes should be rather classified as van der Waals interactions and not as hydrogen bonds. The frequency associated with the C-H stretch of C(sp3)-H...S is blue-shifted.     

An Asymmetric Synthesis of L-694,458, a Human Leukocyte Elastase Inhibitor, via Novel Enzyme Resolution of beta-Lactam Esters

A convergent synthesis of [S-(R,S)]-2-[4-[(4-methylpiperazin-1-yl)carbonyl]phenoxy]-3,3-diethyl-N-[1-[3,4-(methylenedioxy)phenyl]butyl]-4-oxo-1-azetidinecarboxamide (L-694,458, 1), a potent human leukocyte elastase inhibitor, was achieved via chiral synthesis of key intermediates: (S)-3,3-diethyl-4-[4'-[(N-methylpiperazin-1-yl)carbonylphenoxy]-2-azetidinone (2) and (R)-alpha-propylpiperonyl isocyanate (3). Synthesis of beta-lactam 2 was achieved by a novel enantioselective lipase hydrolysis of ester 5 to produce (S)-3,3-diethyl-4-(4'-carboxyphenoxy)-2-azetidinone (6) (60% yield, three cycles, 93% ee) with isolation, epimerization, and recycling of the undesired (R)-ester 5. Isocyanate 3 was prepared by chiral addition of Zn(n-Pr)(2) to piperonal (98% yield, 99.2% ee), azide displacement and reduction to (R)-alpha-propylpiperonylamine (11) (58% yield, 85% ee), crystallization as the D-pyroglutamic acid salt (92% yield, 98.2% ee), and isocyanate formation (98% yield) with phosgene.     

Comparison of the effective core potential and model potential methods in studies of electron correlation energy in molecules: Dihalides and halogen hydrides

Summary The effective core potential and model potential methods were used in post-SCF calculations on HC1, HBr, Cl₂, and Br₂ in order to gain insight into the effect of insufficient representation of inner nodes in the valence orbitals of the approximate methods. The results show that while the correlation energy may be slightly overestimated (by 1–7%), both the electric moment functions and the quantities depending on energy differences are consistently similar for the methods studied and close to the results from all-electron calculations.Dedicated to Prof. Klaus Ruedenberg
