Ultrasonic sensor to measure the density of a liquid or slurry during pipeline transport

This paper describes the design and testing of a computer-controlled sensor for the real-time measurement of the density of a liquid or slurry. It is to be deployed at the US Department of Energy's Hanford Site in Richland, WA, to monitor slurry properties during radioactive waste transfers. To demonstrate the sensor performance, tests were carried out using non-radioactive waste simulants and the results will be presented. The sensor is mounted flush with the pipeline wall in a nominal 5-cm (2-in.) pipe spool piece. The design pressure is 2.8 MPa (400 psi). The probe wedge in contact with the slurry was selected to operate up to pH 14, and the probe components were radiation tested at exposures of 1 x 10(6) R. The sensor is applicable for process control of all types of liquids or slurries in pipelines or in vessels.     

2∶1 Complex of desoxycholic acid and ethyl acetate: Disorder in the structure at 298 and 163 K

The crystal structure of the 21 channel complex of desoxycholic acid and ethyl acetate has been investigated at 298 and 163 K. The space group isP2₁2₁2₁(No. 19) with four molecules of desoxycholic acid in the unit cell. The ethyl acetate molecules are enclathrated along the 2₁ axes parallel toc and exhibit differing degrees of disorder in the low- and room-temperature structures. Differences in the disorder imply that it is both statistical and dynamic in nature. Our best model for each structure yieldsR=0.064 [R _w =0.058,w=( ₂ F)^–1] andR=0.068 [R _w =0.064,w=( ² F) ^–1 ] for the ambient- and low-temperature studies respectively.IUPAC Nomenclature: 3, 12-dihydroxy-5-cholan-24-oic acid.     

The infrared spectra of 2-aminomethylpyridine complexes of metal(II) ions

The infrared spectra (700–150 cm^?1) of twenty-six complexes of 2-aminomethylpyridine (amp) with first transition series metal(II) ions are discussed. The complexes include the tris(amp) complexes [M(amp)₃]²⁺ the bis(amp) compounds M(amp)₂X₂ and the mono(amp) complexes M(amp)X₂. Assignments of the NH₂ rocking modes, v(M-NH₂), v(M-py) and ligand modes are based on the effects of isotopic labelling of the amino group and the effects of substitution of the metal ion and halide. The structural implications of the spectra are discussed.
