Comparison theorems for weak splittings of bounded operators

Summary Comparison theorems for weak splittings of bounded operators are presented. These theorems extend the classical comparison theorem for regular splittings of matrices by Varga, the less known result by Wonicki, and the recent results for regular and weak regular splittings of matrices by Neumann and Plemmons, Elsner, and Lanzkron, Rose and Szyld. The hypotheses of the theorems presented here are weaker and the theorems hold for general Banach spaces and rather general cones. Hypotheses are given which provide strict inequalities for the comparisons. It is also shown that the comparison theorem by Alefeld and Volkmann applies exclusively to monotone sequences of iterates and is not equivalent to the comparison of the spectral radius of the iteration operators.This work was supported by the National Science Foundation grants DMS-8807338 and INT-8918502     

On two mean value properties and functional equations associated with them

Summary Motivated by different mean value properties, the functional equationsf(x) – f(y)/x–y=[(x, y)], (i)xf(y) – yf(x)/x–y=[(x, y)] (ii) (x y) are completely solved when, are arithmetic, geometric or harmonic means andx, y elements of proper real intervals. In view of a duality between (i) and (ii), three of the results are consequences of other three.The equation (ii) is also solved when is a (strictly monotonic) quasiarithmetic mean while the real interval contains 0 and when is the arithmetic mean while the domain is a field of characteristic different from 2 and 3. (A result similar to the latter has been proved previously for (i).)     

The dynamics of multidimensional cosmological models in the presence of quantum effects. I. The case FRW ×T D at high temperatures

The dynamical system approach is applied to the study of dynamics of multidimensional cosmological models with topology FRW ×T ^D (D-dimensional torus) in the presence of high-temperature quantum effects. The stability methods developed in the paper of Szydowski (Gen. Rel. Grav.,20, 221, 1988) are used in the analysis of typical states of the metric in the neighborhood of singularities and for large time values. The problems of dynamical dimensional reduction, structure of singularities, isotropization, etc., are discussed in this context.     

Plane contact problems for a periodic two-layered elastic composite

Summary This paper deals with the two-dimensional static punch problems in the presence of friction for a periodically layered half-space. Within the framework of the homogenized model of linear elasticity with microlocal parameters [8–11] the exact solutions of the considered problems are obtained. The case of the indentation of the composite body by a rigid rectangular punch has been discussed in detail.

Ebene Kontaktprobleme für ein periodisches elastisches Zweischichten-Komposit

Übersicht In dieser Arbeit wird das zweidimensionale statische Stempelproblem mit Reibung für einen periodisch geschichteten Halbraum betrachtet. Im Rahmen eines Homogenisierungsmodells der linearen Elastizitätstheorie mit mikropolaren Parametern werden die exakten Lösungen der betrachteten Probleme gewonnen. Im Detail wird das Eindringen eines rechteckigen starren Stempels behandelt.

     

Intra- versus intermolecular hydrogen bonds in salicylamide derivatives

The crystal structures, solid-state infrared patterns, and thermal properties of two polymorphs of 4-nitrosalicylanilide are presented. In both polymorphs, intramolecular hydrogen bonds are found between the phenol oxygen and the amide proton, and intermolecular hydrogen bonds are found between the amide carbonyl oxygen and the phenol proton. These hydrogen bond patterns are compared to those found in other known salicylamide derivatives and an analysis is given of the factors contributing to preferences for intra- or intermolecular hydrogen bonds in these structures. On the solution of singular linear systems of algebraic equations by semiiterative methods

Summary For a square matrixT ^n,n , where (I–T) is possibly singular, we investigate the solution of the linear fixed point problemx=T x+c by applying semiiterative methods (SIM's) to the basic iterationx ₀ ⁿ ,x _k T c _k–1+c(k1). Such problems arise if one splits the coefficient matrix of a linear systemA x=b of algebraic equations according toA=M–N (M nonsingular) which leads tox=M ^–1 N x+M ^–1 bT x+c. Even ifx=T x+c is consistent there are cases where the basic iteration fails to converge, namely ifT possesses eigenvalues 1 with ||1, or if =1 is an eigenvalue ofT with nonlinear elementary divisors. In these cases — and also ifx=T x+c is incompatible — we derive necessary and sufficient conditions implying that a SIM tends to a vector which can be described in terms of the Drazin inverse of (I–T). We further give conditions under which is a solution or a least squares solution of (I–T)x=c.Research supported in part by the Alexander von Humboldt-Stiftung     

Some aspects of deformation in Al-Zn alloys

Creep resistance investigations of the Al-40 wt % Zn alloy at room temperature have been performed and revealed some creep compliance. Additions of Cu and Si decrease considerably the preliminary creep compliance in the alloy which then turn to be dimensionally stable and resistant to creep. Tensile test investigations performed at different deformation rates have not revealed the existance of the superplastic deformation mechanism.Presented at the 4^th International Symposium on Plasticity of Metals and Alloys, September 711, 1987, Srni, Czechoslovakia.     

The group of local biholomorphisms of ℂ1 and conformal field theory in the operator formalism

Motivated by the operator formulation of conformal field theory on Riemann surfaces, we study the properties of the infinite dimensional group of local biholomorphic transformations (conformal reparametrizations) of ¹ and develop elements of its representation theory.     

Enzymatic flow-injection determination of urea in blood serum using potentiometric gas sensor with internal nonactin based ISE

Ion-selective electrode with cellulose triacetate membrane containing nonactin is employed for the potentiometric detection of ammonia produced in biocatalytic reaction in flow-injection system with enzyme reactor. The elimination of interferences occurring in the presence of alkali metal ions was achieved by covering a nonactin membrane with outer hydrophobic gas permeable membrane. The obtained flow-injection response to ammonia indicates a possibility of ammonia determination down to 10 microM ammonia. In the flow-injection system for urea determination 200 microl of 10-fold diluted blood serum sample was injected into carrier stream of distilled water merged with TRIS buffer, passed through the urease flow-through reactor and then after merging with NaOH stream delivered to the detector. It was found in several series of natural blood serum samples, that the correction for endogenous ammonia in such a determination is not indispensable.
