Radially symmetric wave maps from (1 + 2)-dimensional Minkowski space to general targets

Extending our previous work [5] on this subject we show global existence of smooth solutions to the Cauchy problem for wave maps from the (1 + 2)-dimensional Minkowski space to an arbitrary smooth, compact Riemannian manifold without boundary, for arbitrary smooth, radially symmetric data. Nonvanishing derivatives and normal families

We consider the differential operators Ψ _k , defined by Ψ₁(y) =y and Ψ _k+1(y)=yΨ _k y+d/dz(Ψ _k (y)) fork ∈ ℕ fork∈ ℕ. We show that ifF is meromorphic in ℂ and Ψ _k F has no zeros for somek≥3, and if the residues at the simple poles ofF are not positive integers, thenF has the formF(z)=((k-1)z+a)/(z ²+β z+γ) orF(z)=1/(az+β) where α, β, γ ∈ ℂ. If the residues at the simple poles ofF are bounded away from zero, then this also holds fork=2. We further show that, under suitable additional conditions, a family of meromorphic functionsF is normal if each Ψ _k (F) has no zeros. These conditions are satisfied, in particular, if there exists δ>0 such that Re (Res(F, a)) <−δ for all polea of eachF in the family. Using the fact that Ψ _k (f ^′/f) =f ^(k)/f, we deduce in particular that iff andf ^(k) have no zeros for allf in some familyF of meromorphic functions, wherek≥2, then {f ^′/f :f ∈F} is normal. The amplified model of erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA) with cross-phase modulation (XPM)

Based on the rate equations and the power propagation equations, the amplified model is obtained which considers the cross-phase modulation (XPM)-induced intensity fluctuation between pump power and signal power in erbium-doped fiber amplifier (EDFA). Simulation results show: a higher nonlinear coefficient and a stronger pump power cause a stronger XPM in EDFA. Before the optimal length of EDF, the intensity caused by XPM increases with the increasing length, but after the optimal length, the XPM presents saturation. A bigger nonlinear coefficient γ corresponds to a smaller optimal length and gain, and makes gain saturation more easy. XPM effect will decrease EDFA’s amplified efficiency.     

Generation of UV laser light by stimulated Raman scattering in D2, D2/Ar and D2/He using a pulsed Nd:YAG laser at 355nm

A pulsed Nd:YAG laser at 355nm is used to pump Raman cell filled with D_2, D_2/Ar and D_2/He. With adequately adjusted parameters, the maximum photon conversion efficiency of the first-order Stokes light (S_1, 396.796nm) reaches 33.33% in D_2/Ar and the stability of S_1 in pure D_2 is fairly high, the energy drift being less than 10% when the pump energy drifts in the range of 5%. The conversion efficiency and stability, which are functions of the composition and pressure of the Raman medium and the energy of pump laser, are investigated. The result has been used to optimize the laser transmitter system for a differential absorption lidar system to measure NO_2 concentration profiles.

Asymptotics of estimates in constrained nonlinear regression with long-range dependent innovations

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the asymptotic properties of the least squares estimates (L ₂-estimates) and the least absolute deviation estimates (L ₁-estimates) of the parameters of a nonlinear regression model subject to a set of equality and inequality restrictions, which has a long-range dependent stationary process as its stochastic errors. Then we will compare the asymptotic relative efficiencies of the above estimators.     

Nonextensive Statistical Mechanics Application to Vibrational Dynamics of Protein Folding

The vibrational dynamics of protein folding is analyzed in the framework of Tsallis statistics. We employ exact expressions for classical harmonic oscillators by considering the unnormalized constraints. As q→1, we show that these approximations agree with the result of Gaussian network model.
