A Note on Locally Pathwise Connected Metric Spaces

Given any metric space, we construct its uniformly locally pathwise connected coreflection in the category of all metric spaces and uniformly continuous maps.      

The quadrupole interaction at181Ta in Zn

The quadrupole interaction (QI) in hexagonal close packed zinc lattice was measured using the 482 keV, 10.6 ns probe state of¹⁸¹Ta employing the time-differential perturbed angular correlation technique. The electric field gradient (EFG) at¹⁸¹Ta in Zn was derived from the measured quadrupole interaction frequency at room temperature asV _zz =12.202×10¹⁷ V/cm². The quadrupole interaction measured at various temperatures displayed normal temperature dependence similar to that seen by this probe in many non-cubic hosts.     

Anomalous behaviour of hyperfine fields at iron in new magnetic systems RuxFey Si and RuFeB

A new class of magnetic system Ru_xFe_ySi, has been identified in which the hyperfine field at Fe, as sensed by⁵⁷Fe Mossbauer effect, is seen to evolve at a characteristic temperature far below the bulk magnetic ordering temperatures.     

Quadrupole interaction at111Cd in rare-earth intermetallics

Quadrupole interactions at¹¹¹Cd in various rare-earth intermetallics have been investigated. The enhancement in the efg due to the electronic configurations is found to be small in contrast to pure metals.The authors thank K. Raghunathan for helpful discussions.     

Stable theories, pseudoplanes and the number of countable models

We prove that if T is a stable theory with only a finite number (>1) of countable models, then T contains a type-definable pseudoplane. We also show that for any stable theory T either T contains a type-definable pseudoplane or T is weakly normal (in the sense of [9]).     

RuFeSi — A new magnetic system

A ternary system consisting of Ru, Fe and Si is identified in which the hyperfine field at Fe is seen to evolve at a characteristic temperature, T¹, far below the magnetic ordering temperature, T_m. It is speculated that the magnetic ordering at T_m is itinerant and T¹ corresponds to the localization of the majority spin electrons at the Fe atoms.     

Quantifier elimination for algebraic -groups

We prove that if is an algebraic -group (in the sense of Buium over a differentially closed field of characteristic , then the first order structure consisting of together with the algebraic -subvarieties of , has quantifier-elimination. In other words, the projection on of a -constructible subset of is -constructible. Among the consequences is that any finite-dimensional differential algebraic group is interpretable in an algebraically closed field.

     

On algebraic -groups

We introduce the categories of algebraic -varieties and -groups over a difference field . Under a ``linearly -closed" assumption on we prove an isotriviality theorem for -groups. This theorem immediately yields the key lemma in a proof of the Manin-Mumford conjecture. The present paper crucially uses ideas of Pilay and Ziegler (2003) but in a model theory free manner. The applications to Manin-Mumford are inspired by Hrushovski's work (2001) and are also closely related to papers of Pink and Roessler (2002 and 2004).

     

Fluorocarbon End-functionalized Polymers from Poly(arylether) Dendritic Initiators

Fréchet-type poly(arylether) first and second generation (G1 and G2 respectively) dendrons were prepared from 1-(bromomethyl)-3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)benzene. The latter and the brominated versions of the two dendrons were successfully employed in the copper mediated living radical polymerization (LRP) of styrene-d₈ giving polymers of predictable molecular weights and narrow polydispersities. Contact angle measurements and ion beam analysis were used to explore the adsorption of these materials to the air-polymer surface in blended films with unfunctionalized hydrogenous polystyrene. Although contact angle analysis indicated only modest changes in the hydrophobicity and lipophobicity of the surface, ion beam analysis clearly showed the formation of an excess layer of dendron functionalized polymer at the exposed surface that increased with increasing fluorine content.     

Kinetics of reaction of triethylammonium carboxylates with ethyl α‐halogenoacetate in various solvents

The kinetics of the reaction of ethyl α‐halogenoacetate with benzoic acid in the presence of triethylamine in aqueous acetone and in various solvents have been investigated. The rate constant of the reaction is 4–260 times higher in aprotic dipolar solvents than in protic solvents. The simple regression and multiple regression of log k₂ with various solvent parameters have led to the conclusion that in addition to the solvent polarity, various other solvent properties, together or individually, influence the reaction rate. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
