Synthesis of aggregation pheromone components of cerambycid species through α-hydroxylation of alkylketones

The synthesis of 3-hydroxy-2-hexanone and 2,3-hexanediol, two components of the aggregation pheromone of several cerambycid species, is disclosed in here. Starting from 2-hexanone, through an α-hydroxylation using (diacetoxyiodo)benzene, 3-hydroxy-2-hexanone is obtained in good yield. Further reduction of this compound, gives 2,3-hexanediol in excellent yield. A study of the α-hydroxylation reaction of several alkylketones using an hypervalent iodine reagent is also disclosed in here. The synthesis of optically active compounds (R)- and (S)-3-hydroxy-2-hexanone was achieved starting from 2-hexanone with nitrosobenzene and l- and d-proline respectively, in several reaction media.     

On the assertion that PCT violation implies Lorentz non-invariance

Out of conviction or expediency, some current research programs (Kostelecký (2008) [1], Kostelecký and Russell (2011) [2], Ferrero and Altschul (2011) [3], Anselmi (2009) [4]) take for granted that “PCT violation implies violation of Lorentz invariance”. We point out that this claim (Greenberg (2002) [5]) is still on somewhat shaky ground. In fact, for many years there has been no strengthening of the evidence in this direction. However, using causal perturbation theory, we prove here that when starting with a local PCT-invariant interaction, PCT symmetry can be maintained in the process of renormalization.     

Support vector machines and neural networks used to evaluate paper manufactured using Eucalyptus globulus

Using advanced machine learning techniques as an alternative to conventional double-entry volume equations, a regression model of the inside-bark volume (dependent variable) for standing Eucalyptus globulus trunks (or main stems) has been built as a function of the following three independent variables: age, height and outside-bark diameter at breast height (DBH). The experimental observed data (age, height, outside-bark DBH and inside-bark volume) for 142 trees (E. globulus) were measured and a nonlinear model was built using a data-mining methodology based on support vector machines (SVM) and multilayer perceptron networks (MLP) for regression problems. Coefficients of determination and Furnival’s indices indicate the superiority of the SVM with a radial kernel over the allometric regression models and the MLP.     

Lexicographic products with high reconstruction numbers

The reconstruction number of a graph is the smallest number of vertex-deleted subgraphs needed to uniquely determine the graph up to isomorphism. Bollobás showed that almost all graphs have reconstruction number equal to three. McMullen and Radziszowski published a catalogue of all graphs on at most ten vertices with reconstruction number greater than three. We introduce constructions that generalize the examples identified in their work. In particular, we use lexicographic products of vertex transitive graphs with certain starter graphs from the work of Myrvold and from the work of Harary and Plantholt to generate new infinite families of graphs with high reconstruction numbers. In the process, we settle a question of McMullen and Radziszowski.     

Regiospecific Addition of Alcohols to 9-Hydroxy-and 9-Methoxy-1, 4-Anthraquinone

Conjugated addition of alcohols to 9-hydroxy-and 9-methoxy-1, 4-anthraquinone, in the presence of a strong acid and an oxidant, affords the 2-alkoxy- and 3-alkoxy-substituted regioisomer, respectively.
