Einfluß elektrischer Felder auf die Eigenabsorptionskante fester Körper

This paper realizes an idea ofRedfield in a general and quantitative manner: Charged point defects produce local electric fields in a crystal which cause a change in the absorption-constant compared with the absorption-constant of an undisturbed crystal (Franz-Keldysh-effect). Thus one gets a tail in the absorption constant decreasing from the ideal intrinsic absorption edge towards longer wave-lengths. Applying an external fieldF one finds an additional, frequency-dependent absorptionconstantΔα. Its magnitude and spectral distribution depend on the concentration of defects. For external fields smaller than the internal onesΔα∝ F ² holds at all frequencies. The results are compared with those found byFranz.     

An analytical quasi-exact method for calculating eigenvibrations of thin circular cylindrical shells

A method for calculating the eigenfrequencies and corresponding deformation modes of a thin circular cylindrical shell is presented, based on analytical solutions of Flügge's shell theory equations. The partial differential equations are transformed into algebraic equations which can be solved with high accuracy. Consequently, the results can be considered as quasi-exact. Results of calculations are presented for a shell stiffened at both circular edges. Such boundary conditions are typical of the core barrel of a pressurized water reactor, for instance. Most of the calculated deformation modes show strong gradients of the displacements close to the boundaries.     

Real-Time Detection of Polymerase Activity Using Supercritical Angle Fluorescence

We investigated the incorporation efficiencies of different fluorescently labelled dNTPs with polymerases by complementary strand synthesis. For this reason single stranded DNA was immobilized on a coverslip and the increase of fluorescence due to the synthesis of the corresponding strand with tagged dNTPs was detected with a supercritical angle fluorescence biosensor in real-time. By comparison of the observed signal intensities it was possible to conclude that the system Cy5-dCTP-Klenow (exonuclease free) fragment gives the best incorporation yield of the investigated enzymes and dNTPs.     

Study of magnetoresistance and conductance of bicrystal grain boundary in La0.67Ba0.33MnO3 thin film

La_0.67Ba_0.33MnO₃ (LBMO) thin film is deposited on a 36.7°C SrTiO₃ bicrystal substrate using laser ablation technique. A microbridge is created across bicrystal grain boundary and its characteristics are compared with a microbridge on the LBMO film having no grain boundary. Presence of grain boundary exhibits substantial magnetoresistance ratio (MRR) in the low field and low temperature region. Bicrystal grain boundary contribution in MRR disappears at temperature T>175 K. At low temperature, I-V characteristic of the microbridge across bicrystal grain boundary is nonlinear. Analysis of temperature dependence of dynamic conductance-voltage characteristics of the bicrystal grain boundary indicates that at low temperatures (T<175 K) carrier transport across the grain boundary in LBMO film is dominated by inelastic tunneling via pairs of manganese atoms and tunneling through disordered oxides. At higher temperatures (T>175 K), magnetic scattering process is dominating. Decrease of bicrystal grain boundary contribution in magnetoresistance with the increase in temperature is due to enhanced spin-flip scattering process.
