Photon counting with a loop detector

We propose a design for a photon-counting detector that is capable of resolving multiphoton events. The basic element of the setup is a fiber loop, which traps the input field with the help of a fast electro-optic switch. A single weakly coupled avalanche photodiode is used to detect small portions of the signal field extracted from the loop. We analyze the response of the loop detector to an arbitrary input field and discuss both the reconstruction of the photon-number distribution of an unknown field from the count statistics measured in the setup and the application of the detector in conditional-state preparation.     

Examples of Twisted Cyclic Cocycles from Covariant Differential Calculi

For two covariant differential *-calculi, the twisted cyclic cocycle associated with the volume form is represented in terms of commutators for some self-adjoint operator and some *-representation of the underlying *-algebra.     

Helly-type theorems for homothets of planar convex curves

Helly's theorem implies that if is a finite collection of (positive) homothets of a planar convex body , any three having non-empty intersection, then has non-empty intersection. We show that for collections of homothets (including translates) of the boundary , if any four curves in have non-empty intersection, then has non-empty intersection. We prove the following dual version: If any four points of a finite set in the plane can be covered by a translate [homothet] of , then can be covered by a translate [homothet] of . These results are best possible in general.

     

Correlations in hypernuclear matter

We investigate short-range correlations in nuclear and hypernuclear matter. Self-energies due to short-range correlations and their influence on the nucleon and Λ -hyperon spectral functions are described in an approach accounting for a realistic treatment of mean-field dynamics and a self-consistently derived quasi-particle interaction. Landau-Migdal theory is used to derived the short-range interaction from a phenomenological Skyrme energy density functional, subtracting the long-range pionic contributions to the nucleonic spectral functions. We discuss our results for different hyperon-baryon ratios to show the influence of strangeness on the correlations in hypernuclear matter.
