A Defective Nanotube Molecule of C552H496N24 with Pyridinic and Pyrrolic Nitrogen Atoms

A 3-nm molecule comprising a cylindrical core and cross-shaped rims was designed and synthesized by developing a modular synthetic route. By using a cyclic precursor from previous studies as a starting material, multiple carbazole units were installed at the rims of the defective cylinder. The defective cylinder was synthetically doped with two types of nitrogen atoms, that is, pyridinic and pyrrolic nitrogen atoms, which resulted in solvatochromic shifts in fluorescence by charge-transfer interactions. The structure of the large, C₅₅₂H₄₉₆N₂₄ molecule was fully disclosed by crystallographic analyses, and the unique helical arrangement of nitrogen-doped cylinders in the crystal was revealed.     

Protective Effect of Ferulic Acid against Hydrogen Peroxide Induced Apoptosis in PC12 Cells

Ferulic Acid (FA) is a highly abundant phenolic phytochemical which is present in plant tissues. FA has biological effects on physiological and pathological processes due to its anti-apoptotic and anti-oxidative properties, however, the detailed mechanism(s) of function is poorly understood. We have identified FA as a molecule that inhibits apoptosis induced by hydrogen peroxide (H₂O₂) or actinomycin D (ActD) in rat pheochromocytoma, PC12 cell. We also found that FA reduces H₂O₂-induced reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in PC12 cell, thereby acting as an anti-oxidant. Then, we analyzed FA-mediated signaling responses in rat pheochromocytoma, PC12 cells using antibody arrays for phosphokinase and apoptosis related proteins. This FA signaling pathway in PC12 cells includes inactivation of pro-apoptotic proteins, SMAC/Diablo and Bad. In addition, FA attenuates the cell injury by H₂O₂ through the inhibition of phosphorylation of the extracellular signal-regulated kinase (ERK). Importantly, we find that FA restores expression levels of brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), a key neuroprotective effector, in H₂O₂-treated PC12 cells. As a possible mechanism, FA increases BDNF by regulating microRNA-10b expression following H₂O₂ stimulation. Taken together, FA has broad biological effects as a neuroprotective modulator to regulate the expression of phosphokinases, apoptosis-related proteins and microRNAs against oxidative stress in PC12 cells.     

Transition-Metal Free Catalytic Synthesis of Trifluoromethyl Indolines by [4+1] Cycloaddition of Trifluoromethyl Benzoxazinones with Sulfur Ylides

Stereoselective catalytic synthesis of 3-trifluoromethyl indolines through the [4+1] cycloaddition of benzoxazinones and sulfur ylides in a transition-metal-free manner was developed. In the presence of a catalytic amount of sodium hydride, aza-ortho-quinone methide intermediates were formed from trifluoromethyl benzoxazinones through decarboxylation after the first nucleophilic attack of sulfur ylides, which progressed to a second nucleophilic attack of sulfur ylides, resulting in the [4+1] cycloaddition. The key for this catalytic transformation is the dual attack of sulfur ylides on substrates. This unique transition-metal-free protocol is applicable to the synthesis of non-fluorinated vinyl-, ethynyl- or methyl-substituted indolines. The synthesis of 3-trifluoromethyl indoles was also achieved described under stoichiometric conditions.     

A pitch-synchronous analysis of hoarseness in running speech

A method of pitch-synchronous acoustic analysis of hoarseness requiring a voice sample of only four fundamental periods is presented. This method calculates a noise-to-signal (N/S) ratio, which indicates the depth of valleys between harmonic peaks in the power spectrum. The spectrum is calculated pitch synchronously from a Fourier transform of the signal, windowed through a continuously variable Hanning window spanning exactly four fundamental periods. A two-stage procedure is used to determine the exact duration of the four fundamental periods. An initial estimate is obtained using autocorrelation in the time domain. A more precise estimate is obtained in the frequency domain by minimizing the errors between the preliminary calculated power spectrum and the predicted spectrum spread of a windowed harmonic signal. Analysis of synthesized voices showed that the N/S ratio is sensitive to additive noise, jitter, and shimmer, and is insensitive to slow (8 Hz) modulation in fundamental frequency and amplitude. An analysis of pre- and postoperative voices of six patients with benign laryngeal disease showed that the N/S ratio for vowel /u/ in running speech consistently improved after surgery for all subjects, in agreement with their successful therapeutic results.     

Formation of cyclic organosilicon compounds via organopolysilyl anions starting from methoxymethyldisilanes. A mechanistic study

In the presence of a catalytic amount of sodium methoxide, sym-dimethoxytetramethyldisilane was converted into α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes, MeO(SiMe₂)_nOMe where n ? 3, at room temperature. On the other hand, similar treatment of the disilane in THF solution gave cyclic polysilanes, (Me₂Si)_n where n = 5–7. Decomposition of the disilane in the presence of diphenylacetylene afforded a trisilacyclopentene derivative under similar conditions. This compound was obtained also by the reaction between α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes and diphenylacetylene in the presence of sodium methoxide. These cyclic products most likely were formed via permethyl polysilyl anion intermediates derived from α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes. Also, the formation of α,ω-dimethoxypermethylpolysilanes could be elucidated in terms of the mechanism involving the base-assisted, concerted nucleophilic substitution or stepwise substitution by silyl anions, rather than the successive dimethylsilylene (Me₂Si:) insertion reaction.     

Charge-order pattern of the low-temperature phase from a monoclinic single domain of NaV2O5 uniquely determined by resonant x-ray scattering

The present resonant x-ray scattering has been performed on a monoclinically split single domain of NaV(2)O(5). The observation of a critically enhanced contrast between V(4+) and V(5+) ions has led us to the unequivocal conclusion of the charge-order pattern of the low-temperature phase of NaV(2)O(5) below T(c) = 35 K. In spite of the possible four types of configuration of the zigzag-type charge-order patterns in the ab plane (A,A',B and B'), the stacking sequence along the c axis is determined as the AAA'A' type by comparison with model calculations.     

Synthesis of conjugated oligomers having aromatic and enediyne units alternately in the backbone that show intense fluorescence emission

Total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes by sequential chemoselective conjugate addition-stereoselective nitro-Michael cyclization of an omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester

[reaction: see text] An omega-nitro-alpha,beta,psi,omega-unsaturated ester underwent a chemoselective conjugate addition of a nitroolefin moiety with aryllithium to produce a psi-aryl-omega-nitro-alpha,beta-unsaturated ester, which was then stereoselectively cyclized by intramolecular nitro-Michael reaction giving a functionalized cyclohexane applicable to the total synthesis of (+/-)-alpha- and beta-lycoranes.
