Chiral Photoresponsive Tetrathiazoles That Provide Snapshots of Folding States

Herein, we designed chiral photoresponsive tetra(2‐phenylthiazole)s, which induce a diastereoselective 6π‐electrocyclization reaction in a helically folded structure to freeze the conformational interconversions. The folding conformation with one helical turn of tetra(2‐phenylthiazole)s was supported by multiple intramolecular noncovalent interactions including vicinal S???N interheteroatom interactions and CH–π and π–π stacking interactions between nonadjacent units, as found in X‐ray crystal structures as well as quantum chemical calculations. The introduction of a chiral group at both ends of tetra(2‐phenylthiazole) dictates the preferential folding into a one‐handed helix conformation by the simultaneous operation of S???O and multiple CH–π interactions that involve the chiral end groups. Since the tetra(2‐phenylthiazole)s possess two equivalent photoreactive 6π‐electron systems and the folded conformation is suitable for photoinduced electrocyclization reaction, they undergo a photocyclization reaction in a stereoselective manner to memorize the chirality of the helix in a resulting diastereomeric closed form.     

Converging-axicon-based radially polarized ytterbium fiber laser and evidence on the mode profile inside the gain fiber

The radially polarized mode is achieved from an active Yb fiber by utilizing of an intracavity converging axicon, where the axicon acts as a TM(01) mode selector based on not only its Brewster convex surface but also the distance between its vertex and plane output coupler. The polarization state of the annular laser beam is checked by using a home-made eight-hole aperture. Furthermore, an uncoated plane glass plate is inserted into the cavity, and the reflected beam points to the existence of an annular lasing mode inside the gain fiber. The issues for developing high-power radially polarized fiber lasers also are considered.     

Non-separating even cycles in highly connected graphs

We prove that every k-connected graph (k ≥ 5) has an even cycle C such that G-V (C) is still (k-4)-connected. The connectivity bound is best possible.     

Spin-crossover phenomenon of the assembled iron complexes with 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane as bridging ligand studied by Mössbauer spectroscopy

The transition temperatures between high- and low-spin states of the assembled spin-crossover complexes, Fe(NCX)₂(bpa)₂(guest) (X = S, Se, BH₃; bpa = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl)ethane; guest = biphenyl, 2-nitrobiphenyl, diphenylmethane, or 1,4-dichlorobenzene), were compared with the Mössbauer parameters. The transition temperature increases when the QS value of Fe^II high-spin state becomes small. The transition temperature also increases by changing the anion from NCS to NCSe and then to NCBH₃.     

Analysis of visual perception of light emitting diode brightness in dense fog with various droplet sizes

Road signs must provide a conspicuous signal to a wide variety of drivers over a broad range of environmental and geometric conditions. Recently, there are an increasing number of applications in which light emitting diodes (LEDs) are used as the light source, including critical transportation signaling. In the presence of fog, the resulting visual signal is disturbed due to light scattering by airborne water droplets. By measuring LED brightness with human spectral sensitivity in various densities and various droplet sizes (10, 30, 50, and 100 μm), it is understood that the particle size distribution (fog droplet size) and density of fog does affect visibility in fog. The colored LEDs that contain a yellow component had high brightness evaluation, blue component had low brightness evaluation in all densities and different droplet sizes. The result in this paper can contribute to air and land traffic safety and the prevention of accidents.     

Chemoselective transfer hydrodechlorination of aryl chlorides catalyzed by Cp*Rh complexes

An effective Cp*Rh catalyzed transfer hydrodechlorination of aryl chlorides was achieved with high tolerance towards a variety of functional groups using 2-butanol as a hydrogen source.     

Achievement of a 920-MHz high resolution NMR

We have developed a 920-MHz NMR system and performed the proton NMR measurement of H(2)O and ethylbenzene using the superconducting magnet operating at 21.6 T (920 MHz for proton), which is the highest field produced by a superconducting NMR magnet in the persistent mode. From the NMR measurements, it is verified that both homogeneity and stability of the magnet have a specification sufficient for a high resolution NMR.     

Synthesis of macrocyclic cage compounds by diamine-dihalide one-step coupling reaction

Macropolycyclic cage compounds were synthesized by a direct reaction between diamines and bis(bromomethyl) compounds. The procedure for constructing the polycyclic cage structure is simple and straightforward. The macropolycyclic compounds obtainable from this cyclization procedure are three-dimensional cage compounds, and any other isomers were not obtained except for two examples. Benzene, pyridine, and aliphatic units could be introduced into the cage structure. The macrocycles that have strong cation affinity were obtained as their potassium complexes.     

Picosecond study of energy transfer between rhodamine 6G and 3,3'-diethylthiacarbocyanine iodide in the premicellar region: förster mechanism with increased local concentration

The mechanism of enhancement in the energy transfer between rhodamine 6G and 3,3'-diethylthiacarbocyanine iodide by sodium lauryl sulfate in the premicellar region was studied by a picosecond laser technique. The Forster mechanism with an increased local concentration suggesting dye-rich induced micelle formation was concluded from the shape of the decay curve.
