Molecular structure of 1,1-difluoroethylene as determined by gas phase electron diffraction and microwave data

The structure of 1,1-difluoroethylene was determined, from gas phase electron diffraction data obtained independently in Leiden and Tokyo and the rotational constants of F₂CCH₂, F₂CCHD and F₂CCD₂ derived from the microwave study by Chauffoureaux. The two electron diffraction data agreed without significant discrepancy. From a joint least squares analysis of the diffraction and microwave data, the following r_g bond distances and r_z bond angles were derived: CC = 1.340 ± 0.006 Å, C-F = 1.315 ± 0.003 Å, C-H = 1.091 ± 0.010 Å, ∠C-C-F = 124.7 ± 0.3°, ∠C-C-H = 119.0 ± 0.4°, where the uncertainties represent estimated limits of error.     

Improvement in enzyme activity and stability by addition of low molecular weight polyethylene glycol to sodium bis(2-ethyl-L-hexyl)sulfosuccinate/isooctane reverse micellar system

The activity and stability of Chromobacterium viscosum lipase (glycerolester hydrolase, EC 3.1.1.3)-catalyzed olive oil hydrolysis in sodium bis (2-ethyl-1-hexyl)sulfosuccinate (AOT)/isooctane reverse micelles is increased appreciably when low molecular weight polyethylene glycol (PEG 400) is added to the reverse micelles. To understand the effect of PEG 400 on the phase behavior of the reverse micellar system, the phase diagram of AOT/PEG 400/water/isooctane system was studied. The influences of relevant parameters on the catalytic activity in AOT/PEG 400 reverse micelles were investigated and compared with the results in the simple AOT reverse micelles. In the presence of PEG 400, the linear decreasing trend of the lipase activity with AOT concentration, which is observed in the simple AOT reverse micelles, disappeared. Enzyme entrapped in AOT/PEG reverse micelles was very stable, retaining>75% of its initial activity after 60 d, whereas the half-life in simple AOT reverse micelles was 38 d. The kinetics parameter maximum velocity (V _max)exhibiting the temperature dependence and the activation energy obtained by Arrhenius plot was suppressed significantly by the addition of PEG 400.     

Total synthesis of (+)-benzastatin E via diastereoselective Grignard addition to 2-acylindoline

[reaction: see text] A stereoselective total synthesis of (+)-benzastatin E (1) is described. The synthesis involves a diastereoselective Grignard addition to 2-acylindoline 2, which is derived from commercially available (S)-2-indolinecarboxylic acid (3). The unknown absolute configuration of (+)-1 is determined as (9S,10R).     

H2 generation during dry grinding of kaolinite

H2 generation during mechanochemical treatment of kaolinite by dry grinding was examined by X-ray diffraction analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, and BET surface area measurement. The H2 concentration in the mill pot, measured by gas chromatography, increased with grinding time up to a maximum concentration of 156 ppm (0.35 micromol) after 600 min. This H2 generation is considered to occur as a result of three processes: (1) structural destruction characterized by the delamination and loss of hydroxyl groups as a result of dry grinding, (2) transformation of liberated hydroxyls into water molecules by mechanochemical effects such as prototropy, and (3) H2 generation through reaction between surface water molecules and mechanoradicals created by the rupture of Si-O or Al-O-Si bonds. Although the surface area plateaued after 240 min grinding, the H2 concentration continued to increase, indicating that surface mechanoradicals are created during this later grinding stage. Thus, H2 generation can be used as an indicator of mechanoradical formation during mechanochemical treatment.     

Efficient Synthesis of Cyclic Block Copolymers by Rotaxane Protocol by Linear/Cyclic Topology Transformation

High‐yielding synthesis of cyclic block copolymer (CBC) using the rotaxane protocol by linear‐cyclic polymer topology transformation was first demonstrated. Initial complexation of OH‐terminated sec‐ammonium salt and a crown ether was followed by the successive living ring‐opening polymerizations of two lactones to a linear block copolymer having a rotaxane structure by the final capping of the propagation end. CBC was obtained in a high yield by an exploitation of the mechanical linkage through the translational movement of the rotaxane component to transform polymer structure from linear to cyclic. Furthermore, the change of the polymer topology was translated into a macroscopic change in crystallinity of the block copolymer.     

Aryl-β-C-glucosidation using glucal boronate: application to the synthesis of tri-O-methylnorbergenin

Novel aryl-β-C-glucosidation method using glucal boronate was developed. This protocol can offer several advantages including use of non-toxic, easily handling glucal boronate as a crystalline solid and storable at room temperature for several months. Tri-O-methylnorbergenin (8,10-di-O-methylbergenin), an anti-HIV active bergenin derivative, was concisely synthesized by application of the aryl-β-C-glucosidation method.     

Syntheses,Structures, and Reactivities of Sulfur-Containing Cycloalkenes

Sulfur-containing cycloalkenes possessing disulfide units 1, 2, and 3 were obtained by oxidation of cis-disodium ethene-1,2-dithiolate, and their crystal structures were determined by the X-ray crystallographic analyses. Compound 1 was found to give the ring expansion product 3 in acetonitrile even at room temperature and also form reactive thioaldehyde under irradiation.     

Selective and Efficient Iodination of the p-Positions of Calix[4]arene Derivatives

Selective and very convenient methods of iodination of calix[4]arenes using ICl or NIS have been demonstrated, preparing mono(p-iodo) and 1,3-di(p-iodo) derivatives of calix[4]arenecrown-4 and -5, as well as mono(p-iodo) derivative of tris(O-propyl)calix[4]arene in good yields.     

First total synthesis of prunustatin A

In this study, we achieved the first total synthesis of natural prunustatin A (1), a novel inhibitor of glucose-regulated protein 78 (GRP78) expression. A key feature included a 15-membered ring macrocyclization, which was successfully accomplished by employing Shiina macrolactonization using 2-methyl-6-nitrobenzoic anhydride (MNBA) and 4-dimethylaminopyridine (DMAP).
