Synthesis and Electrochemical Studies of Spinel LiNi1−xMnxVO4

Spinel compound LiNi_1−xMn_xVO₄ (0≤x≤0.4) had been prepared by using the moist chemical method. X-ray diffraction spectra showed that the lattice constant increased with x in the LiNi_1−xMn_xVO₄, XPS spectra indicating that Li1s had a chemical shift towards lesser binding energy, and manganese in LiNi_1−xMn_xVO₄ existing as the mixed valence of Mn²⁺ and Mn³⁺. The electrochemical charge and discharge testing at a current density of 0.1 mA/cm² between the potentials of 4.0 and 3.0 V vs Li/Li⁺ in 1 mol/dm³ LiPF₆/EC+DEC (1:1 by volume) at 25°C showed that LiNi_1−xMn_xVO₄ cell has a better rechargeability, but a lower cell voltage of 4.0 V vs Li/Li⁺ than that without the doping sample, and the capacity and the cycle efficiency of the Li/LiNi_1−xMn_xVO₄ cells increased with x in the LiNi_1−xMn_xVO₄.

Localized molecular orbital studies of certain compounds with [A_3X_3] six-membered rings

The localized molecular orbitals (LMOs) of certain quasi-aromatic organic and inor-ganic molecules with six-membered rings have been calculated by virtue of the ab initio methodusing STO-3G and 4-31G basis sets as well as the CNDO/2 method. It is shown that there existsextensively-delocalized p-pπ bonding in these quasi-aromatic systems. The localized pictures ofthe π-type LMOs for the heterocyclic and homocyclic systems from the σ-π localization schemeare discussed. The Generator Orbital approach is utilized to account for the bonding patterns.

The structure of enopeptins A and B, novel depsipeptide antibiotics

The structures of enopeptins A and B, novel depsipeptide antibiotics with 1,3,5,7,9-decapentaene-1,10-dicarboxylic acid and 2-amino-3-hydroxycyclopent-2-enone in a side chain, were determined by chemical and spectroscopic means.     

Copolymerization of 2-methylene-4-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane with electrophilic vinyl monomers through zwitterionic mechanism

Spontaneous copolymerization of cyclic ketene acetal, 2-methylene-4-phenyl-1,3-dioxolane ( I ) with common electrophilic vinyl monomers, such as methyl α-cyanoacrylate (MCA), acrylonitrile (AN), and methyl methacrylate (MMA) were investigated to further explore zwitterion polymerization method with cyclic ketene acetals. In the reaction of I with MCA and AN, spontaneous copolymerization took place at ambient temperature. The copolymers of I with MCA gave low molecular weight polymers, but copolymers obtained with I and AN were high molecular weight polymers. In the reaction of I and MMA, high molecular weight copolymer was obtained only at temperatures above 80°C. Thus, obtained polymers were not the alternating copolymers and possessed high I content in all the cases. From the above results, macrozwitterionic mechanism was suggested as discussed.     

Oxidation of Styrene with Molecular Oxygen in Supercritical CO2

The oxidation of styrene with molecular oxygen catalyzed by PdCl2 CuCl2 has been investigated in supercritical CO2 with a batch reactor. The oxidative system of styrene contains four components at the beginning and seven components during the reaction. The critical temperature, critical pressure, and critical density at different conversions are determined by using a high-pressure view cell. The effect of phase behavior on the conversion and selectivity were studied. Experimental results showed that the critical parameters of the reaction mixture at fixed initial molar ratio changed with the conversion of reactant. The conversion of styrene reached maximum near the critical density of the reaction mixture. Product selectivity also varied with density of reaction mixture and could be tuned to some degree.     

First synthesis of a malarial prototype: a fully lipidated and phosphorylated GPI membrane anchor

A strategy is described for syntheses of a fully lipidated and phosphorylated prototype of the GPI of Plasmodium falciparum, the causative agent of lethal cerebral, drug-resistant malaria. Orthoesters, prepared in four steps from d-mannose, and methyl α-d-glucopyranoside are the key starting materials. The latter furnishes the inositol moiety using Bender’s procedure, while the former gives the other four units of the pseudo-pentasaccharide. The strategy for installing the three biologically important acyl units of the phosphoinositide has been worked out. The critical, biosynthetically important C2-O-acyl group of the inositol is exceptionally stable, showing no tendency to migrate to the cis-related C3-OH in several test substrates.
