Semiconductor gas sensors in bioreactor control

A simple semiconductor gas sensor (TGS 812) is used for the on-line measurement and control of indole during the production of l-tryptophan from indole and l-serine with immobilized E. coli cells. Indole is estimated in the reactor gas space. In combination with an automatic indole supply system, a feed-batch process became possible. The indole concentration was monitored and kept within the optimal range (300–600 mg l^?1). A simple gas-sensing electrode dipped in the reaction medium provides direct measurement of organic solvents and gases in the liquid. Such a system is suitable for on-line determination of ethanol (10–70 g l^?1) during continuous production of ethanol with immobilized yeast cells.     

13C nuclear magnetic resonance spectra—VI: Stereochemical dependence of γanti,heterosubstituent effects on 13C chemical shifts of bridgehead substituted molecules

The ¹³C NMR data of some mono- and disubstituted adamantanes, homoadamantenes and homonoradamantenes are presented. A model of dependencies of the γ_anti substituent induced shifts on torsion angles and internuclear distances between substituents and the γ carbons is proposed. Furthermore, it is shown that for the α substituent induced shifts strain within the molecular frameworks of these compounds plays no significant part.     

Analysis of the essential oil from aerial parts of Eupatorium cannabinum subsp. corsicum (L.) by gas chromatography with electron impact and chemical ionization mass spectrometry

Eupatorium cannabinum subsp. corsicum (L.), an aromatic plant, is an endemic subspecies from Corsica. The essential oil from aerial parts of E. cannabinum subsp. corsicum was studied by GC, GC/MS and 13C NMR. One hundred and forty-seven components were identified representing 93.6% of the total amount. The main constituents are germacrene D (28.5%), alpha-phellandrene (19.0%) and para-cymene (5.2%). A particularity of this essential oil is the presence of monoterpene esters derived from nerol, lavandulol, borneol, thymol and 8,9-dehydrothymol. These compounds have been investigated using GC/MS in different ionization modes like electron impact (EI), positive chemical ionization (PCI) and negative chemical ionization (NCI).     

Mild and practical cycloaddition reactions of furans with phenyl vinyl sulfonate

Phenyl vinyl sulfonate reacts with various alkyl furan derivatives under mild conditions to produce excellent yields of the corresponding cycloadducts.     

Benzodiazepine analogues. Part 21. 13C NMR analysis of benzoxathiepine derivatives

The influence of substituents and structure on the 13C NMR spectra of four series of benzoxathiepine derivatives has been investigated. Signal assignments in the 13C NMR spectra have been facilitated by the use of several predictive methods, permitting comparison of their relative efficacy.     

Ring-opening carbonyl–olefin metathesis of norbornenes

A computational and experimental study of the hydrazine-catalyzed ring-opening carbonyl–olefin metathesis of norbornenes is described. Detailed theoretical investigation of the energetic landscape for the full reaction pathway with six different hydrazines revealed several crucial aspects for the design of next-generation hydrazine catalysts. This study indicated that a [2.2.2]-bicyclic hydrazine should offer substantially increased reactivity versus the previously reported [2.2.1]-hydrazine due to a lowered activation barrier for the rate-determining cycloreversion step, a prediction which was verified experimentally. Optimized conditions for both cycloaddition and cycloreversion steps were identified, and a brief substrate scope study for each was conducted. A complication for catalysis was found to be the slow hydrolysis of the ring-opened hydrazonium intermediates, which were shown to suffer from a competitive and irreversible cycloaddition with a second equivalent of norbornene. This problem was overcome by the strategic incorporation of a bridgehead methyl group on the norbornene ring, leading to the first demonstrated catalytic carbonyl–olefin metathesis of norbornene rings.

A computational and experimental study has uncovered a second generation hydrazine that enables the catalytic ring-opening carbonyl–olefin metathesis of norbornenes.     

Photoinduced morphism of gemini surfactant aggregates

The photochemical behaviour of an azobenzene chromophore inserted in a gemini surfactant imparts photocontrol to the resulting amphiphile assemblies, including the collapse, upon irradiation, of the multi lamellar vesicles formed in aqueous solution.     

Efficient synthesis of [3H]-sanglifehrin A via selective oxidation/reduction of alcohols at C31 and C35

[Reaction: see text]. Sanglifehrin A is a novel complex natural product showing strong immunosuppressive activity and remarkably high affinity for cyclophilin A. To assess its pharmacokinetic properties in vivo, an efficient synthetic route was developed to introduce a tritium label in position C35 of sangliferin A via an oxidation/reduction strategy. The synthetic approach is particularly attractive, because the C35-oxo intermediate 7 is available in good yield on large scale and the reducing agent, lithium tri-sec-butylborotritide, is readily available. An attempt to apply a similar strategy to the alcohol in position C31 led primarily to C31-epi-hydroxy sanglifehrin A under a variety of conditions.     

Synthesis of pyrrolo[1,2-b]cinnolines

The synthesis of the pyrrolo[1,2-b]cinnoline analogs 2 and 4–13 is described. The key step of this synthesis involves an intramolecular aromatic halide displacement on [2-(2-halobenzoyl)pyrrol-1-yl]carbamic acid esters. Several reactions of these cinnoline analogs with electrophilic reagents have been investigated.
