The density and sound speed of two coastal, gelatinous zooplankton, Mnemiopsis leidyi (a ctenophore) and Cyanea capillata (lion's mane jellyfish), were measured. These parameters are important inputs to acoustic scattering models. Two different methods were used to measure the density of individual animals: one used a balance and graduated cylinder to determine the mass and displacement volume of the animal, the other varied the density of the solution the animal was immersed in. When the same animal was measured using both methods, density values were within 1% of each other. A travel-time difference method was used to measure the sound speed within the animals. The densities of both zooplankton slightly decreased as the animals increased in length, mass, and volume. The ratio of animal density and sound speed to the surrounding seawater (g and h, respectively) are reported for both animals. For Mnemiopsis leidyi ranging in length from 1 to 5 cm, the mean value (+/-standard deviation) of g and h were 1.009 (+/-0.004) and 1.007 (+/-0.001). For Cyanea capillata ranging in bell diameter from 2 to 11 cm, the mean value (+/-standard deviation) of g and single value of h were 1.009 (+/-0.004) and 1.0004. 相似文献

The antinociceptive activity of Flaveria trinervia extracts by tail-flicking and writhing methods was evaluated using mice. The abdominal writhing method was carried out by administering petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol extracts orally. After 1?h of incubation, 0.6% acetic acid (10?mL?kg(-1)) was administered intraperitoneally. After 5?min, each group of mice was observed for the amount of writhing for a duration of 20?min. Acetyl salicylic acid was used as the standard reference. The tail-flick method was carried out using a thermal model and the maximum possible analgesia was calculated. The LD?? values of petroleum ether, chloroform and methanol extracts were 700, 700 and 500?mg?kg?1, respectively. The methanol extract at 50?mg?kg?1 showed significant antinociceptive activity. The petroleum ether and chloroform extracts showed moderate antinociceptive activity at a dose of 70?mg?kg?1. The methanol extract showed more significant antinociceptive activity than the other extracts but was less effective than the standard. Cobalt-ferrite (CoFe2O4) based materials are suitable candidates for magnetomechanical sensor applications owing to a strong sensitivity of their magnetostriction to an applied magnetic field. Zn-doped cobalt-ferrites, with nominal compositions CoFe2−xZnxO4 (x=0–0.3), were synthesized by auto-combustion technique using Co- , Fe- , and Zn-nitrate as precursors. X-ray spectra analysis and Transmission electron microscopy studies revealed that the as-prepared powders were comprised of nano-crystalline (∼25–30 nm) cubic-spinel phase with irregularly-shaped grains morphology along with minor impurity phases. Calcination (800 °C for 3 h) of the precursor followed by sintering (1300 °C for 12 h) resulted in a single phase cubic-spinel structure with average grain size ∼2–4 μm, as revealed from scanning electron micrographs. The magnitude of coercive field decreases from ∼540 Oe for x=0 to 105 Oe for x=0.30. Saturation magnetization initially increases and peaks to ∼87 emu/g for x=0.2 and then decreases. The peak value of magnetostriction monotonically decreases with increasing Zn content in the range 0.0–0.3; however the piezomagnetic coefficient (dλ/dH) reaches a maximum value of 105×10−9 Oe−1 for x=0.1. The observed variation in piezomagnetic coefficient in the Zn substituted cobalt ferrite is related to the reduced anisotropy of the system. A platinum complex with the 6-(7-benzothiazol-2'-yl-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridinyl ligand (1) was synthesized and the crystal structure was determined. UV/Vis absorption, emission, and transient difference absorption of 1 were systematically investigated. DFT calculations were carried out on 1 to characterize the electronic ground state and aid in the understanding of the nature of low-lying excited electronic states. Complex 1 exhibits intense structured (1)π-π* absorption at λ(abs)<440?nm, and a broad, moderate (1)MLCT/(1)LLCT transition at 440-520?nm in CH(2)Cl(2) solution. A structured (3)π-π*/(3)MLCT emission at about 590?nm was observed at room temperature and at 77?K. Complex 1 exhibits both singlet and triplet excited-state absorption from 450?nm to 750?nm, which are tentatively attributed to the (1)π-π* and (3)π-π* excited states of the 6-(7-benzothiazol-2'-yl-9,9-diethyl-9H-fluoren-2-yl)-2,2'-bipyridine ligand, respectively. Z-scan experiments were conducted by using ns and ps pulses at 532?nm, and ps pulses at a variety of visible and near-IR wavelengths. The experimental data were fitted by a five-level model by using the excited-state parameters obtained from the photophysical study to deduce the effective singlet and triplet excited-state absorption cross sections in the visible spectral region and the effective two-photon absorption cross sections in the near-IR region. Our results demonstrate that 1 possesses large ratios of excited-state absorption cross sections relative to that of the ground-state in the visible spectral region; this results in a remarkable degree of reverse saturable absorption from 1 in CH(2)Cl(2) solution illuminated by ns laser pulses at 532?nm. The two-photon absorption cross sections in the near-IR region for 1 are among the largest values reported for platinum complexes. Therefore, 1 is an excellent, broadband, nonlinear absorbing material that exhibits strong reverse saturable absorption in the visible spectral region and large two-photon-assisted excited-state absorption in the near-IR region. 相似文献

Selenium hyperaccumulator Stanleya pinnata, Colorado ecotype, was supplied with water-soluble and biologically available selenate or selenite. Selenium distribution and tissue speciation were established using X-ray microscopy (micro-X-ray fluorescence and transmission X-ray microscopy) in two dimensions and three dimensions. The results indicate that S. pinnata tolerates, accumulates, and volatilizes significant concentrations of selenium when the inorganic form supplied is selenite and may possess novel metabolic capacity to differentiate, metabolize, and detoxify selenite concentrations surpassing field concentrations. The results also indicate that S. pinnata is a feasible candidate to detoxify selenium-polluted soil sites, especially locations with topsoil polluted with soluble and biologically available selenite. 相似文献

A fast discrete curvelet transform based focus-stacking algorithm for extending the depth of focus of a transmission x-ray microscope (TXM) is presented. By analyzing an image stack of a sample taken in a Z-scan, a fully in-focus image can be generated by the proposed scheme. With the extended depth of focus, it is possible to obtain 3D structural information over a large volume at nanometer resolution. The focus-stacking method has been demonstrated using a dataset taken with a laboratory x-ray source based TXM system. The possibility and limitations of generalizing this method to a synchrotron based TXM are also discussed. We expect the proposed method to be of important impact in 3D x-ray microscopy. 相似文献

Acoustic assessment of Bering Sea euphausiids and their predators can provide useful data for ecosystem studies if the acoustic scattering characteristics of these animals are known. The amount of acoustic energy that is scattered by different marine zooplankton taxa is strongly affected by the contrast of the animal's density (g) and sound speed (h) with the surrounding seawater. Density and sound speed contrast were measured in the Bering Sea during the summer of 2008 for several different zooplankton and nekton taxa including: euphausiids (Thysanoessa inermis, Thysanoessa raschii, and Thysanoessa spinifera), copepods, amphipods, chaetognaths, gastropods, fish larvae, jellyfish, and squid. Density contrast values varied between different taxa as well as between individual animals within the same species. Sound speed contrast was measured for monospecific groups of animals and differences were found among taxa. The range, mean, and standard deviation of g and h for all euphausiid species were: g = 1.001-1.041; 1.018 ± 0.009 and h = 0.990-1.017; 1.006 ± 0.008. Changes in the relationship between euphausiid material properties and animal length, seawater temperature, seawater density, and geographic location were also evaluated. The structure of single-molecule single crystals of isotactic polystyrene (i-PS) was investigated by electron diffraction (ED). The nanoscale single-molecule single crystals were found to be more resistant to electron irradiation when compared to the larger crystals of many molecules, as indicated by both observation of ED and high-resolution electron microscopy with increasing radiation dose. It is proposed that since the single-molecule single crystals are very small, the secondary electrons escape more frequently from the crystal so that the radiation damage is reduced. Lattice imaging was achieved at room temperature in the case of single-molecule single crystals because of their stability to electron irradiation.
