Pattern transfer and photoluminescence damage assessment of deep-submicrometer features etched by photon-induced cryoetching

We present a study of pattern-transfer and etch-induced damage in photon-induced cryoetching. Features with effective radii as small as 100 nm have been formed in both bulk and layered GaAs/AlGaAs materials. A measurement of the photoluminescence of etch-defined deep- submicrometer structures material suggests that this form of etching results in minimal process-induced damage. Modeling of the luminescence vs feature size for these features shows that the luminescence is limited only by carrier diffusion and non-radiative surface recombination.     

Sensitivity in Supramolecular Architectures of Polyaromatic Salts Containing Two Singly‐Pimerized Bipyridines

Three novel supramolecular arrays of zigzag polyaromatic salts are reported. Both the conformation and disposition of the dications are subjected to various noncovalent interactions. Thus, the presence or absence of the π‐π interacting enclathrated molecules, the efficient packing and the involved hydrogen bonding interactions of anions, as well as the increased hydrophobic property of the dications themselves exert influence.     

Cyclization of a cysteine conjugate of N-(3,5-Dichlorophenyl)succinimide

N-(3,5-Dichlorophenyl)-2-cysteinylsuccinimide methyl ester hydrochloride ( 5 ) was prepared from N-(3,5-dichlorophenyl)maleimide ( 3 ) and cysteinyl methyl ester hydrochloride. Attempted neutralization of the cysteine conjugate salt with triethylamine resulted in spontaneous cyclization of 5 to form the more stable 2-(N-3,5-dichlorophenylcarbamoylmethyl)-5-carbomethoxy-1,4-thiazine- 3-one ( 6 ). Similar results might be expected in vivo should these metabolites of succinimides be formed.     

Novel synthesis of sterically hindered N-substituted lactams from imides

An efficient and practical synthesis of sterically hindered N-substituted lactams has been developed starting from simple starting materials. The stereochemistry of the synthetically useful N,N acetal intermediate has been established.     

Preparation and application of cryptand-coated piezoelectric crystal gas-chromatographic detector

A re-usable and sensitive cryptand-22-coated quartz-crystal membrane piezoelectric sensor with a homemade computer interface for signal acquisition and data processing was prepared and applied as a gas-chromatographic (GC) detector for various organic molecules. The oscillating frequency of the quartz crystal decreased due to the adsorption of organic molecules on cryptand-22. Effects of functional group, molar mass, steric hindrance and polarity of organic molecules on frequency responses of the cryptand-coated piezoelectric crystal detector were investigated. The cryptand-coated piezoelectric crystal GC detector had demonstrated high sensitivity for various polar organic molecules and good reproducibility when re-used. The frequency responses of the cryptand-coated crystal for various molecules were in the following order: carboxylic acids (RCOOH)primary amines (R-NH₂)>alcohols (ROH)>secondary amines (R₂NH)>tertiary amines (R₃N)>ketones. More polar molecules exhibited better frequency responses. The effect of temperature and amount of coating on the frequency responses of cryptand-coated crystal GC detector were also investigated. The cryptand-coated piezoelectric crystal GC detector compared well with the commercial thermal conductivity detector (TCD).
