Using a simple model it is shown that the cost of constraining a hydrated potassium ion inside a narrow nanopore is smaller than the cost of constraining the smaller hydrated sodium ion. The former allows for a greater distortion of its hydration shell and can therefore maintain a better coordination. We propose that in this way the larger ion can go through narrow pores more easily. This is relevant to the molecular basis of ion selective nanopores and since this mechanism does not depend on the molecular details of the pore, it could also operate in all sorts of nanotubes, from biological to synthetic. 相似文献

Nowadays the electrical activity measured in tall objects has been widely characterized, but the collected data of lightning rods installed in buildings do not amount to enough to obtain reliable statistics. ABSTRACTHere we report on the synthesis and mesomorphic properties of a series of imino-linked dimeric molecules. In order to improve our understanding of the structure–NTB phase correlations, we have studied the impact of geometric and electronic factors arising from varying mesogenic units, different spacer lengths and from the ratio (n/m) between the lengths of terminal chains (n) and spacer (m). From the perspective of the molecular geometry, the results show that the stability of the NTB phase results from increasing effective molecular bending and with the broadening of the mesogenic unit, in particular near the spacer, and that the n/m ratio plays a substantial role in conjunction with the specific mesogenic unit. A computational study of the electronic properties shows that a broadening of the mesogenic core in the vicinity of the spacer is associated with an increased anisotropy of the electrostatic potential distribution. Within a given series of materials our study suggests that the incidence of the NTB phase and its thermal stability are governed by the synergy of specific geometrical factors and the anisotropy of the electrostatic potential distribution of the mesogenic core. 相似文献

UV sensitivity of the vegetative and reproductive tissues of two Antarctic brown macroalgae was compared. Photosynthesis as well as the content and localization of phenolic substances were determined. Responses to UV radiation were quantified as chlorophyll fluorescence (Fv/Fm). Ascoseira mirabilis showed high UV tolerance, while in Cystosphaera jacquinotii Fv/Fm decreased by 15–21%, the receptacles being more tolerant than the vegetative blades. The phlorotannin contents showed an opposite pattern: the soluble fraction dominated in C. jacquinotii while in A. mirabilis the insoluble fraction was more abundant. Soluble phlorotannins were higher in the reproductive than in vegetative tissues in both species. Images of tissue cross‐sections under violet‐blue light excitation confirmed a high allocation of phenolic compounds (as blue autofluorescence) in C. jacquinotii, both in reproductive and vegetative blades. The allocation and proportions of the soluble and insoluble phlorotannins could be related with the observed UV tolerance of the vegetative and reproductive tissues. 相似文献

Nanoporous carbon refers to a broad class of materials characterized by nanometer-size pores, densities lower than water, large specific surface areas, and high porosities. These materials find applications in nanocatalysis and gas adsorption, among others. The porosity structure, that determines the properties and functionalities of these materials, is still not characterized in detail. Here, we reveal the detail porosity structure and the electronic properties of a type of nanoporous carbons, the so called carbide derived carbons (CDCs), through a simulation scheme that combines large simulation cells and long time scales at the empirical level with first-principles density functional calculations. We show that the carbon network consists in one layer thick nanographenes interconnected among them. The presence of specific defects in the carbon layers (heptagons and octagons) yields to open pores. These defects are not completely removed through annealing at high temperatures. We also suggest that, in contrast with graphene which is a zero-gap semiconductor, these materials would have a metallic character, since they develop an electronic band around the Fermi level. This band arises from the electronic states localized at the edges of the nanographene layers. 相似文献
