On the Formation of a Protic Ionic Liquid in Nature

The practical utility of ionic liquids (ILs) makes the absence (heretofore) of reported examples from nature quite puzzling, given the facility with which nature produces many other types of exotic but utilitarian substances. In that vein, we report here the identification and characterization of a naturally occurring protic IL. It can be formed during confrontations between the ants S. invicta and N. fulva. After being sprayed with alkaloid‐based S. invicta venom, N. fulva detoxifies by grooming with its own venom, formic acid. The mixture is a viscous liquid manifestly different from either of the constituents. Further, we find that the change results as a consequence of formic acid protonation of the N centers of the S. invicta venom alkaloids. The resulting mixed‐cation ammonium formate milieu has properties consistent with its classification as a protic IL.     

Synthesis of axinohydantoins

A short synthesis of the hydantoin-containing marine sponge metabolites axinohydantoins is described. A key feature of the synthesis is a putative biomimetic, intramolecular cyclization of alpha-functionalized imidazolone 5, which affords the tricyclic pyrroloazepinone framework comprising 6. In addition, the conversion of imidazolones to alpha,beta-unsaturated hydantoins is outlined and represents a new approach to these heterocyclic systems.     

Dipolar excitations at the LIII x-ray absorption edges of the heavy rare-earth metals

We report measured dipolar asymmetry ratios at the LIII edges of the heavy rare-earth metals. The results are compared with a first-principles calculation and excellent agreement is found. A simple model of the scattering is developed, enabling us to reinterpret the resonant x-ray scattering in these materials and to identify the peaks in the asymmetry ratios with features in the spin and orbital moment densities.     

Synthesis of fully substituted polyhydroxylated pyrrolizidines via Cope-House cyclization

Total synthesis of the proposed structure of (-)-hyacinthacine C(5) and its epimers at C6 and C7 is described. A key step of the synthesis was the construction of the bicyclic pyrrolizidine system by means of a nucleophilic addition of a dithiane to a cyclic nitrone followed by a Cope-House cyclization.     

Total synthesis and biological evaluation of pederin, psymberin, and highly potent analogs

The potent cytotoxins pederin and psymberin have been prepared through concise synthetic routes (10 and 14 steps in the longest linear sequences, respectively) that proceed via a late-stage multicomponent approach to construct the N-acyl aminal linkages. This route allowed for the facile preparation of a number of analogs that were designed to explore the importance of the alkoxy group in the N-acyl aminal and functional groups in the two major subunits on biological activity. These analogs, including a pederin/psymberin chimera, were analyzed for their growth inhibitory effects, revealing several new potent cytotoxins and leading to postulates regarding the molecular conformational and hydrogen bonding patterns that are required for biological activity. Second generation analogs have been prepared based on the results of the initial assays and a structure-based model for the binding of these compounds to the ribosome. The growth inhibitory properties of these compounds are reported. These studies show the profound role that organic chemistry in general and specifically late-stage multicomponent reactions can play in the development of unique and potent effectors for biological responses.     

Promoting peptide α-helix formation with dynamic covalent oxime side-chain cross-links

Covalent side-chain cross-linking has been shown to be a viable strategy to control peptide folding. We report here that an oxime side-chain linkage can elicit α-helical folds from peptides in aqueous solution. The bio-orthogonal bridge is formed rapidly under neutral buffered conditions, and the resulting cyclic oximes are capable of dynamic covalent exchange.     

On timing Jitter in wavelength-division multiplexed soliton systems

Collision-induced timing shifts in a wavelength-division multiplexed soliton system are computed when damping, amplification, filtering and positive dispersion management following the loss profile are included. A statistical analysis is presented which takes into account the resulting effect of the large number of collisions occurring in the fiber. Analytic expressions are derived for the root mean square timing jitter and the maximum length of error-free transmission with an arbitrary number of channels. An extensive analysis of system performance corresponding to situations with and without filters and/or dispersion management is carried out.
