Three-dimensional evolution of a relativistic current sheet: triggering of magnetic reconnection by the guide field

The linear and nonlinear evolution of a relativistic current sheet of pair (e(+/-)) plasmas is investigated by three-dimensional particle-in-cell simulations. In a Harris configuration, it is obtained that the magnetic energy is fast dissipated by the relativistic drift kink instability (RDKI). However, when a current-aligned magnetic field (the so-called "guide field") is introduced, the RDKI is stabilized by the magnetic tension force and it separates into two obliquely propagating modes, which we call the relativistic drift-kink-tearing instability. These two waves deform the current sheet so that they trigger relativistic magnetic reconnection at a crossover thinning point. Since relativistic reconnection produces a lot of nonthermal particles, the guide field is of critical importance to study the energetics of a relativistic current sheet.

The synthesis, structure, and photophysical properties of a new cyclometalated dinuclear iridium complex, (ppy)2Ir(mu-BPB)Ir(ppy)2 [ppy = 2-phenylpyridine, BPB = 1,4-bis(pyridin-2-yl)benzene], have been investigated.

When heated, bis-Cu(II) octaphyrin(1.1.1.1.1.1.1.1) is quantitatively split into two Cu(II) porphyrins both in solution and film states, which is accompanied by large absorption spectral changes.     

A new 9-methoxyyohimbine-type indole alkaloid from Mitragyna africanus

A new yohimbine-type indole alkaloid (1). was isolated from the stem bark of Mitragyna africanus (WILLD.) collected in Nigeria, along with known seven Corynanthe-type oxindole alkaloids, two secoiridoids, three lignans, and a quinovic acid derivative. Their structures were elucidated by spectroscopic analyses.     

Photodecarbonylation of ruthenium carbonyl octaethylporphyrin via stepwise two-photon absorption of visible light

The photoinduced decarbonylation of a ruthenium(II) carbonyl octaethylporphyrin (RuOEP(CO)(Py)) complex has been shown to occur upon nanosecond pulse laser irradiation as a visible light excitation source, which is reasonably interpreted by a stepwise two-photon absorption process.     

Sigmasigma* transition in anti,cisoid alternating oligosilanes: clear-cut evidence for suppression of conjugation effect by a cisoid turn

On the basis of the UV absorption spectra of the anti,cisoid alternating oligosilanes, the first experimental clear-cut evidence was presented for the generally accepted idea that the sigma conjugation in polysilanes does not effectively extend through a tetrasilane fragment with a small dihedral angle such as a cisoid turn.     

Analysis of cigarette smoke by an online thermal desorption system and multidimensional GC-MS

Single puffs of cigarette smoke with a wide continuous range of volatility are directly analyzed using a new system. The system consists of a smoking machine, an online thermal desorption system (TDS), and a multidimensional gas chromatograph-mass spectrometer (MDGC-MS) system. The online TDS with the smoking machine collects the single-puff cigarette smoke with glass beads as the cryogenic adsorbent. The MDGC is composed of three capillary columns, Poraplot Q, and DB-WAX for separation and a deactivated capillary column for pressure balance, which enables simultaneous separation of the two different phases. The smoke desorbed from the TDS is divided into vapor and semivolatile phases and analyzed individually with each column by the MDGC. Thus, the system enables the overall analysis of the two phases simultaneously, including acetaldehyde and 1,4-benzenediol. This system also provides more appropriate analysis for compounds crossing the two phases such as toluene and pyridine. For the approach of introducing internal standards, a gas mixture of toluene-d(8) and o-xylene-d(10) is applied and the compounds are detected in the vapor and semivolatile phases, respectively.
