An abelian group is said to be quasi-minimal (purely quasi-minimal, directly quasi-minimal) if it is isomorphic to all its subgroups (pure subgroups, direct summands, respectively) of the same cardinality as . Obviously quasi-minimality implies pure quasi-minimality which in turn implies direct quasi-minimality, but we show that neither converse implication holds. We obtain a complete characterisation of quasi-minimal groups. In the purely quasi-minimal case, assuming GCH, a complete characterisation is also established. An independence result is proved for directly quasi-minimal groups.

In this work we show how endomorphisms of certain pure subgroups of the Baer–Specker group can be extended to endomorphisms of the whole group. This allows us to establish the existence of a large family of essentially indecomposable slender groups with prescribed endomorphism rings. The extension technique is then applied to show that the Baer–Specker group is a countably-free weak Crawley group which is not a Crawley group.  相似文献

We develop scalar-on-image regression models when images are registered multidimensional manifolds. We propose a fast and scalable Bayes’ inferential procedure to estimate the image coefficient. The central idea is the combination of an Ising prior distribution, which controls a latent binary indicator map, and an intrinsic Gaussian Markov random field, which controls the smoothness of the nonzero coefficients. The model is fit using a single-site Gibbs sampler, which allows fitting within minutes for hundreds of subjects with predictor images containing thousands of locations. The code is simple and is provided in the online Appendix (see the “Supplementary Materials” section). We apply this method to a neuroimaging study where cognitive outcomes are regressed on measures of white-matter microstructure at every voxel of the corpus callosum for hundreds of subjects.  相似文献

A detailed chemical kinetic model for oxidation of acetylene at intermediate temperatures and high pressure has been developed and evaluated experimentally. The rate coefficients for the reactions of C2H2 with HO2 and O2 were investigated, based on the recent analysis of the potential energy diagram for C2H3 + O2 by Goldsmith et al. and on new ab initio calculations, respectively. The C2H2 + HO2 reaction involves nine pressure‐ and temperature‐dependent product channels, with formation of triplet CHCHO being dominant under most conditions. The barrier to reaction for C2H2 + O2 was found to be more than 50 kcal mol?1 and predictions of the initiation temperature were not sensitive to this reaction. Experiments were conducted with C2H2/O2 mixtures highly diluted in N2 in a high‐pressure flow reactor at 600–900 K and 60 bar, varying the reaction stoichiometry from very lean to fuel‐rich conditions. Model predictions were generally in satisfactory agreement with the experimental data. Under the investigated conditions, the oxidation pathways for C2H2 are more complex than those prevailing at higher temperatures and lower pressures. Acetylene is mostly consumed by recombination with H to form vinyl (reducing conditions) or with OH to form a CHCHOH adduct (stoichiometric to lean conditions). Both C2H3 and CHCHOH then react primarily with O2. The CHCHOH + O2 reaction leads to formation of significant amounts of glyoxal (OCHCHO) and formic acid (HOCHO), and the oxidation chemistry of these intermediates is important for the overall reaction.  相似文献

The propagation of stress waves in pyramids was studied photoelastically with the application of a laser-photomultiplier tube system and an internal polariscope for recording moving fringes. Dispersion and attenuation of stress waves were considered in a straight bar, a 5-deg pyramid, and a 20-deg pyramid made of Hysol 4290 epoxy plastic. In the straight bar and 5-deg pyramid, longitudinal waves propagate without any dispersion even though the waves attenuate as they progress down the models; in the 20-deg pyramid, however, the dispersion of the stress waves is quite significant. The distributions of the axial and radial stresses and the photoelastic fringe patterns obtained on the 20-deg pyramid show that the stress wave front is spherical with the maximum stress along the central axis of the pyramid. A one-dimensional theory of wave propagation without correction factors in a small-angle infinite cone compares well with the experimental results.  相似文献

The quasineutral presheath layer at the boundary of fully ionized, collisional, and magnetized plasma with an ambipolar flow to an adjacent absorbing wall was analyzed using a two fluid magneto‐hydrodynamic model. The plasma is magnetized by a uniform magnetic field B , imposed parallel to the wall. The analysis did not assume that the dependence of the particle density on the electric potential in the presheath is according to the Boltzmann equilibrium, and the dependence of the mean collision time τ on the varying plasma density within the presheath was not neglected. Based on the model equations, algebraic expressions were derived for the dependence of the plasma density, electron and ion velocities, and the electrostatic potential on the position within the presheath. The solutions of the model equations depended on two parameters: Hall parameter (β ), and the ratio (γ ), where γ = ZTe /(ZTe + Ti ), and Te , Ti and Z are the electron and ion temperatures and ionicity, respectively. The characteristic scale of the presheath extension is several times ri /β , where ri is the ion radius at the ion sound velocity. The electric potential could have a non monotonic distribution in the presheath. The ions are accelerated to the Bohm velocity (sound velocity) in the presheath mainly near the presheath‐sheath boundary, in a layer of thickness ~ri /β . Programmed cell death or apoptosis occurs in many tissues during normal development and in the normal homeostasis of adult tissues. Apoptosis also plays a significant role in abnormal development and disease. Increased interest in apoptosis and cell death in general has resulted in the development of new techniques and the revival of old ones. Each assay has its advantages and disadvantages that can render it appropriate and useful for one application, but inappropriate or difficult to use in another. Understanding the strengths and limitations of the assays would allow investigators to select the best methods for their needs.  相似文献
