Structural results for the control of queueing systems using event-based dynamic programming

In this paper we study monotonicity results for optimal policies of various queueing and resource sharing models. The standard approach is to propagate, for each specific model, certain properties of the dynamic programming value function. We propose a unified treatment of these models by concentrating on the events and the form of the value function instead of on the value function itself. This is illustrated with the systematic treatment of one and two-dimensional models. This revised version was published online in June 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.     

Biomolecular interaction monitoring of autoantibodies by scanning surface plasmon resonance microarray imaging

A new commercial surface plasmon resonance (SPR) imaging analysis system with a novel SPR dip angle scanning principle allows the measurement, without the need for labeling, of the exact SPR dip angle. With this system hundreds of biomolecular interactions can be monitored on microarrays simultaneously and with great precision. The potency of this system is demonstrated by automatically monitoring the interactions between citrullinated peptides and serum autoantibodies of 50 rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients and 29 controls in a single step. The smallest antibody concentration that could be measured in this experimental setup was 0.5 pM.     

A concise method for determining a valve flow coefficient of a valve under compressible gas flow

This work presents a novel method of determining a valve flow coefficient for a valve and transient mass flow rate of compressible gas discharged from a reservoir. The proposed method consists of a set of equations to express the physical phenomena and measurement equipment to measure the indispensable data used in the above equations. Regardless of the kind of valve, the valve flow coefficient can be obtained efficiently and feasibly. The results of this study indicate not only that the valve flow characteristics of the diaphragm valve significantly differ from those of the ball valve, but also that the C_v flow equation conventionally used is no longer valid for the diaphragm valve. The valve flow coefficient of the ball valve determined by the proposed method is about 48 and the representative one proposed by the ANSI/ISA is about 56. In addition, the mass flow rate of gas flow through a valve under transient process can be estimated without using a flow meter. Moreover, the cumulated masses discharged predicted by the method proposed herein are consistent well with those of the experimental results. The deviations are smaller than 6%.

Dynamic control of a single-server system with abandonments

In this paper, we discuss the dynamic server control in a two-class service system with abandonments. Two models are considered. In the first case, rewards are received upon service completion, and there are no abandonment costs (other than the lost opportunity to gain rewards). In the second, holding costs per customer per unit time are accrued, and each abandonment involves a fixed cost. Both cases are considered under the discounted or average reward/cost criterion. These are extensions of the classic scheduling question (without abandonments) where it is well known that simple priority rules hold.
