On almost-sure versions of classical limit theorems for dynamical systems

The purpose of this article is to support the idea that “whenever we can prove a limit theorem in the classical sense for a dynamical system, we can prove a suitable almost-sure version based on an empirical measure with log-average”. We follow three different approaches: martingale methods, spectral methods and induction arguments. Our results apply, among others, to Axiom A maps or flows, to systems inducing a Gibbs–Markov map, and to the stadium billiard.     

Stereoselective synthesis of trifluoromethyl-substituted 1,2-diamines by aza-Michael reaction with trans-3,3,3-trifluoro-1-nitropropene

Aza-Michael addition of optically pure 4-phenyl-2-oxazolidinone to 3,3,3-trifluoro-1-nitropropene proceeds smoothly at low temperature with a high yield. Diastereoselectivity of the addition depends on the base used and lithiated species proved to be highly efficient affording 92% de. Optically pure 1,2-diamino-3,3,3-trifluoropropane is prepared in 58% yield from the aza-Michael addition product through a three-step procedure.     

A Model for Spacetime: The Role of Interpretation in Some Grothendieck Topoi

We analyse the proposition that the spacetime structure is modified at short distances or at high energies due to weakening of classical logic. The logic assigned to the regions of spacetime is intuitionistic logic of some topoi. Several cases of special topoi are considered. The quantum mechanical effects can be generated by such semi-classical spacetimes. The issues of: background independence and general relativity covariance, field theoretic renormalization of divergent expressions, the existence and definition of path integral measures, are briefly discussed in the proposal. The connection with some problems in foundations of mathematics and differential topology are also discussed.     

On the distribution of the number of customers in the symmetric M/G/1 queue

We consider an M/G/1 queue with symmetric service discipline. The class of symmetric service disciplines contains, in particular, the preemptive last-come-first-served discipline and the processor-sharing discipline. It has been conjectured in Kella et al. [1] that the marginal distribution of the queue length at any time is identical for all symmetric disciplines if the queue starts empty. In this paper we show that this conjecture is true if service requirements have an Erlang distribution. We also show by a counterexample, involving the hyperexponential distribution, that the conjecture is generally not true. AMS Subject Classifications Primary—60K25; Secondary—90B22     

Toward phenanthridin-2-ylidene: electrophilicity versus acidity in planar-constrained C-aryl iminium salts

A phenanthridinium salt was prepared in four steps, including an intramolecular CH-arylation and a hydride abstraction reaction. Treatment with sterically demanding bases does not lead to the corresponding carbene, but rather to addition products: the planar-constrained geometry significantly enhances the electrophilicity over the acidity of C-aryl iminium salts.     

Regioselectivity in the ene-reaction of singlet oxygen with cyclic alkenes: photooxygenation of methyl-substituted 1,4-cyclohexadiene derivatives

The photooxygenation of the 1-methyl-, 2,3-dimethyl-, and 1,4-dimethylcyclohexa-1,4-dienes, which are readily available through Birch reduction, yielded the corresponding ene-products. The formed endocyclic dienes were trapped by the addition of singlet oxygen to give the corresponding bicyclic endoperoxy hydroperoxides. In the case of 1-methylcyclohexa-1,4-diene and 1,4-dimethylcyclohexa-1,4,-diene, the cis-effect determined the product distribution. Photooxygenation of 2,3-dimethylcyclohexa-1,4-dienes gave mainly exocyclic olefin, which was attributed to the lowered rotational barrier of the methyl group and increased reactivity of the methyl groups.     

A finite cutting plane method for facial disjunctive programs

This paper shows that any linear disjunctive program with a finite number of constraints can be transformed into an equivalent facial program. Based upon linear programming technique, a new, finite cutting plane method is presented for the facial programs.

Zusammenfassung Die Arbeit zeigt, daß jedes lineare disjunktive Optimierungsproblem mit endlich vielen Restriktionen in ein äquivalentes Fazetten-Problem transformiert werden kann. Auf der Grundlage von linearer Optimierungstechnik wird für das Fazetten-Problem ein neues, endliches Schnittebenenverfahren vorgestellt.

     

A two-fraction model for the calculation of the resonance spectra of the complex permittivity of ice in the far infrared

A two-fraction model that makes it possible to calculate analytically the complex dielectric permittivity of ice in the far infrared and submillimeter wavelength ranges is proposed. The librational and vibrational fractions are considered. The first fraction, consisting of rigid dipoles executing anharmonic reorientations in defects of the structure, gives rise to the librational band of ice at 800 cm^?1. The second fraction consists of elastically vibrating oppositely charged H-bonded molecules. This fraction describes two bands of ice in the range 100–300 cm^?1, and the nonresonant background of dielectric losses in the submillimeter wavelength range. The dielectric permittivity spectra of ice calculated for the temperature of ?7°C are consistent with the experimental spectra. The spectra of ice at the temperature ?30°C are predicted.
