Elemental concentrations in the spinach reference material determined by k0-based INAA

The IAEA-331 spinach material NIST SRM 1570a Spinach Leaves, submitted to an intercomparison run by the IAEA, has been analysed by k₀-based INAA with counting using both low and high energy photon detectors. The results have been compared with (i) the certified values of the NIST SRM 1570a; the agreement is good, taking into account the uncertainties; and (ii) the certified and “consensus” values of the former NIST SRM 1570 Spinach Leaves, their composition in minor and trace-elements are quite similar; however a lower content has been observed for Co, Fe and Sc in the IAEA-331 and for Zn in the SRM 1570. For quality control, the NIST 1573 Tomato Leaves and the NIST 1575 Pine Needles have been analysed using the same conditions as for the IAEA-331. The results agree quite well with the certified and “consensus” values given in the literature.     

Evaluation of the antiviral and antimicrobial activities of triterpenes isolated from Euphorbia segetalis

A phytochemical reinvestigation of the whole plant of Euphorbia segetalis yielded five tetracyclic triterpenes: 3beta-hydroxy-cycloart-25-en-24-one (1), cycloart-25-ene-3beta,24-diol (2), cycloart-23-ene-3beta,25-diol (3), lanosta-7,9(11),24-trien-3beta-ol (4) and lanosta-7,9(11),24(31)-trien-3beta-ol (5). beta-acetoxy-cycloart-25-en-24-one (1a) and glutinol (6), lupenone (7), dammaranodienol (9), cycloartenol acetate (10), 24-methylenecycloartanol acetate (11) and beta-sitosterol (12), isolated previously, were evaluated for their antiviral activities against Herpes simplex virus (HSV) and African swine fever virus (ASFV). Lupenone exhibited strong viral plaque inhibitory effect against HSV-1 and HSV-2. The in vitro antifungal and antibacterial activities of la, cycloart-23-ene-3beta,25-diol, 3-acetate (3a) and 6-12 were also investigated.     

A Carbocationic Triarylmethane-Based Porous Covalent Organic Network

A thermally stable carbocationic covalent organic network (CON), named RIO-70 was prepared from pararosaniline hydrochloride, an inexpensive dye, and triformylphloroglucinol in solvothermal conditions. This nanoporous organic material has shown a specific surface area of 990 m² g⁻¹ and pore size of 10.3 Å. The material has CO₂ uptake of 2.14 mmol g⁻¹ (0.5 bar), 2.7 mmol g⁻¹ (1 bar), and 6.8 mmol g⁻¹ (20 bar), the latter corresponding to 3 CO₂ molecules adsorbed per pore per sheet. It is shown to be a semiconductor, with electrical conductivity (σ) of 3.17×10⁻⁷ S cm⁻¹, which increases to 5.26×10⁻⁴ S cm⁻¹ upon exposure to I₂ vapor. DFT calculations using periodic conditions support the findings.     

A simple and high‐resolution HPLC‐PDA method for simultaneous quantification of local anesthetics in in vitro buccal permeation enhancement studies

A simple, isocratic, high‐resolution and prompt HPLC‐PDA method was developed and validated for the simultaneous quantification of prilocaine (PCL) and lidocaine (LCL) hydrochlorides in in vitro buccal iontophoresis‐driven permeation studies. A reversed‐phase C₁₈ column (250 mm x 4.6 mm, 3μm, 110Å) was used for the chromatographic separation. The mobile phase contained acetonitrile: 0.1M sodium phosphate buffer, pH 7.0 (1:1, v/v), plus 0.05% (v/v) diethylamine. The isocratic flow rate was set at 1 mL/min and the detection wavelength was 203 nm. PCL and LCL eluted in 8.9 min and 13 min, respectively, and the system suitability parameters varied within an acceptable range. The method was selective, sensitive, precise, accurate and robust, producing a linear plot at the concentration range of 0.25 to 10 µg/mL. The application of this method was demonstrated by a significant enhancement of the permeation of PCL and LCL with the application of iontophoresis (1 mA/cm² per 1 h) through isolated porcine esophageal epithelium. The amount of the drug retained in the epithelium also increased with the application of an electrical current. Copyright © 2015 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.
