The sorption and permeation of carbon dioxide gas in miscible blends of poly(phenylene oxide) and polystyrene was measured as a function of pressure at 35°C over the entire range of blend compositions. The results are well described quantitatively by the dual sorption and dual mobility models developed for glassy polymers. The Henry's law sorption parameter was analyzed by the Flory—Huggins theory of ternary mixtures to obtain an interaction parameter which quantifies the exothermic heat of mixing for this blend system. The Langmuir capacity term was successfully related to the unrelaxed volume of the glassy blends. Transport properties of the blends were found to lie well below predictions based on simple additivity which is consistent with the strong interaction between the two polymers. 相似文献

We study the finite-size effects associated with the appearance of a light, i.e. Goldstone, particle in the Kogut-Susskind lattice gauge theory. We analytically study the order parameter and the two-meson propagator in the strong coupling limit on a finite lattice. We give their explicit interpolations between the broken phase of the infinite-volume limit and the symmetric one of the finite system. Finite mixture distributions arise in sampling a heterogeneous population. Data drawn from such a population will exhibit extra variability relative to any single subpopulation. Statistical models based on finite mixtures can assist in the analysis of categorical and count outcomes when standard generalized linear models (GLMs) cannot adequately express variability observed in the data. We propose an extension of GLMs where the response follows a finite mixture distribution and the regression of interest is linked to the mixture’s mean. This approach may be preferred over a finite mixture of regressions when the population mean is of interest; here, only one regression must be specified and interpreted in the analysis. A technical challenge is that the mixture’s mean is a composite parameter that does not appear explicitly in the density. The proposed model maintains its link to the regression through a certain random effects structure and is completely likelihood-based. We consider typical GLM cases where means are either real-valued, constrained to be positive, or constrained to be on the unit interval. The resulting model is applied to two example datasets through Bayesian analysis. Supporting the extra variation is seen to improve residual plots and produce widened prediction intervals reflecting the uncertainty. Background
We have recorded responses from single neurons in murine visual cortex to determine the effectiveness of the input from the two murine cone photoreceptor mechanisms and whether there is any unique selectivity for cone inputs at this higher region of the visual system that would support the possibility of colour vision in mice. Each eye was stimulated by diffuse light, either 370 (strong stimulus for the ultra-violet (UV) cone opsin) or 505 nm (exclusively stimulating the middle wavelength sensitive (M) cone opsin), obtained from light emitting diodes (LEDs) in the presence of a strong adapting light that suppressed the responses of rods.Results
Single cells responded to these diffuse stimuli in all areas of striate cortex. Two types of responsive cells were encountered. One type (135/323 – 42%) had little to no spontaneous activity and responded at either the on and/or the off phase of the light stimulus with a few impulses often of relatively large amplitude. A second type (166/323 – 51%) had spontaneous activity and responded tonically to light stimuli with impulses often of small amplitude. Most of the cells responded similarly to both spectral stimuli. A few (18/323 – 6%) responded strongly or exclusively to one or the other spectral stimulus and rarely in a spectrally opponent manner.Conclusion
Most cells in murine striate cortex receive excitatory inputs from both UV- and M-cones. A small fraction shows either strong selectivity for one or the other cone mechanism and occasionally cone opponent responses. Structural modification at the 2′‐O‐position of riboses in oligonucleotide therapeutics is of critical importance for their use as drugs. To date, the methoxyethyl (MOE) substituent is the most important and features in dozens of antisense oligonucleotides that have been tested in clinical trials. Yet, the search for new improved modifications continues in a quest for increased oligonucleotide potency, improved transport in vivo and favorable metabolism. Recently, we described how the conjugation of spermine groups to pyrimidines in oligonucleotides vastly increases their affinity for complementary RNAs through accelerated binding kinetics. Here we describe how spermines can be linked to the exocyclic amino groups of cytidines in MOE‐oligonucleotides employing a straightforward ‘convertible nucleoside approach’ during solid phase synthesis. Singly‐ or doubly‐modified oligonucleotides show greatly enhanced affinity for complementary RNA, with potential for a new generation of MOE‐based oligonucleotide drugs. 相似文献

A general approach for the efficient hydrogen‐isotope exchange of nucleobase derivatives is described. Catalyzed by ruthenium nanoparticles, using mild reaction conditions, and involving either D2 or T2 as isotopic sources, this reaction possesses a wide substrate scope and a high solvent tolerability.
