Oxidative amidation of aromatic aldehydes with amine hydrochloride salts catalyzed by silica‐coated magnetic carbon nanotubes (MagCNTs@SiO2)‐immobilized imine–Cu(I)

Mesoporous silica‐coated magnetic carbon nanotubes were prepared; their surface functionalization, followed by reaction with CuI, were carried out to develop a Cu‐grafted functionalized mesoporous material. This system is able to catalyze oxidative amidation of aromatic aldehydes with amine hydrochloride salts, generating amide derivatives in moderate to good yields. Magnetic properties of this catalyst led to easy separation as well as providing significant recyclability. Copyright © 2013 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     

2‐Arylation/alkylation of benzothiazoles using superparamagneticgraphene oxide‐Fe3O4 hybrid material as a heterogeneous catalystwith diisopropyl azodicarboxylate (DIAD) as an oxidant

In this report, we introduced Graphene oxide‐iron oxide (GO‐Fe₃O₄) nanocomposites as a heterogeneous catalyst for arylation/alkylation of benzothiazoles with aldehydes and benzylic alcohols in the presence of diisopropyl azodicarboxylate (DIAD) as an oxidant which exclusively produced 2‐aryl (alkyl)‐1H–benzothizoles in moderate to excellent yields. The absence of precious metals and toxic solvent, easy product isolation, and recyclability of the GO‐Fe₃O₄ with no loss of activity are notable advantages of this method.     

Characterizing Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient Binding to Human Serum Albumin by Spin‐Labeling and EPR Spectroscopy

Drug binding to human serum albumin (HSA) has been characterized by a spin‐labeling and continuous‐wave (CW) EPR spectroscopic approach. Specifically, the contribution of functional groups (FGs) in a compound on its albumin‐binding capabilities is quantitatively described. Molecules from different drug classes are labeled with EPR‐active nitroxide radicals (spin‐labeled pharmaceuticals (SLPs)) and in a screening approach CW‐EPR spectroscopy is used to investigate HSA binding under physiological conditions and at varying ratios of SLP to protein. Spectral simulations of the CW‐EPR spectra allow extraction of association constants (K_A) and the maximum number (n) of binding sites per protein. By comparison of data from 23 SLPs, the mechanisms of drug–protein association and the impact of chemical modifications at individual positions on drug uptake can be rationalized. Furthermore, new drug modifications with predictable protein binding tendency may be envisaged.     

X-ray micro-imaging by capillary optics

In this work the results on X-ray micro-imaging by means of novel polycapillary optical elements will be presented. To simulate various radiation propagation processes in both single capillary and polycapillary systems, a PolyCAD code was developed. The new experimental results on radiation redistribution by novel capillary lenses in comparison with simulated data will be reported. The images of characterized extended samples (~ 3 mm) were recorded with 6 μm resolution, the maximum provided by CCD. A new application for diethyl azodicarboxylate: efficient and regioselective thiocyanation of aromatics amines

Highly regioselective thiocyanations of indoles, anilines and pyrrole are achieved via an efficient and simple protocol using NH₄SCN and diethyl azodicarboxylate (DEAD) as a mild oxidant.     

Selective mono- and di-N-alkylation of aromatic amines with alcohols and acylation of aromatic amines using Ph3P/DDQ

Selective N-monoalkylation of aromatic amines with 1° and 2° alcohols and conversion of aromatic amines to amides are performed immediately and in excellent yields using triphenylphosphine (PPh₃) and 2,3-dichloro-5,6-dicyanobenzoquinone (DDQ) in dichloromethane at room temperature. Symmetrical and unsymmetrical N,N-dialkylation of aromatic amines are also carried out in modest yield at room temperature by this reagent system.     

Design and performance evaluation of the imaging payload for a remote sensing satellite

In this paper an analysis method and corresponding analytical tools for design of the experimental imaging payload (IMPL) of a remote sensing satellite (SINA-1) are presented. We begin with top-level customer system performance requirements and constraints and derive the critical system and component parameters, then analyze imaging payload performance until a preliminary design that meets customer requirements. We consider system parameters and components composing the image chain for imaging payload system which includes aperture, focal length, field of view, image plane dimensions, pixel dimensions, detection quantum efficiency, and optical filter requirements. The performance analysis is accomplished by calculating the imaging payload's SNR (signal-to-noise ratio), and imaging resolution. The noise components include photon noise due to signal scene and atmospheric background, cold shield, out-of-band optical filter leakage and electronic noise. System resolution is simulated through cascaded modulation transfer functions (MTFs) and includes effects due to optics, image sampling, and system motion. Calculations results for the SINA-1 satellite are also presented.     

Transition-metal-free oxidative amidation of benzyl alcohols with amines catalyzed by NaI: a new method for the synthesis of benzamides

A simple, inexpensive, and efficient method for the synthesis of benzamides via the reaction of benzyl alcohols and amine hydrochloride salts in the presence of NaI as a green catalyst is described. Various derivatives of benzamide were synthesized in moderate to good yields using this method.
