The sensitivity of the lehn cryptand—europium and terbium (III) complexes to anions compared to a coordinatively saturated systems

Titrations of the Lehn cryptand [Ln⊂bpy.bpy.bpy]³⁺ complexes of both europium (III) and terbium (III) with fluoride and phosphate ions indicate that these anions displace water from the solvation sphere. In the case of the europium complex an enhancement of luminescence intensity is observed, whilst with the terbium complex a reduction in the emission intensity occurs. Described are the preparations of analogous, coordinatively saturated complexes that are inert to the influence of these anions.     

Coated-wire electrodes containing polymer immobilized ionophores blended with poly(vinyl chloride)

Polymers containing covalently attached 18-crown-6 or 2.2.2 cryptand units were incorporated into plasticized PVC membranes and the composite membranes were examined as potassium ion sensor elements. Ionophores were linked to carboxy-PVC and to poly(acrylic acid) via amide linkages to an alkyl spacer unit. Coated-wire electrodes (CWEs) from the immobilized ionophores gave acceptable responses, but conventional ion-selective membrane electrodes (ISEs) prepared by solvent casting were inactive. Dip-cast membranes did give active ISEs. Potassium electrode performance was independent of the loading of the ionophore within the acrylate support polymer, but depended upon the spacer length. Ion selectivity varied with the ionophore loading within the support polymer. Selectivity is a composite of the ionophore selectivity and ion-exchange interactions with the acrylate backbone, giving selectivities akin to carboxylate substituted crown ethers, notably enhanced monovalent/divalent ion discrimination relative to the ionophore in solution. Polymer immobilization extended the lifetime of active electrodes.     

Refractometric discrimination of void-space filling and swelling during vapour sorption in polymer films

Thin polymeric films have been deposited as upper cladding layers on a new integrated optical interferometer fabricated from layers of silicon oxynitride on a silicon wafer. The evanescent field of the probing waveguide mode transduces refractive index changes in the polymer layer into the measured phase changes in the device. Real-time measurement of index change and its sign is obtained. Upon exposure to humid air, we record water sorption by films of poly(vinyl pyrrolidone) by a rapid positive index change for void-space filling followed by a slow negative index change for swelling. Sorption of water vapor into a thin film of the viscous liquid polymer polyethylenimine shows only swelling mode behaviour and a simple constitutive model can be applied to give the fractional water occupied volume.     

Improved FlexX docking using FlexS-determined base fragment placement

We report on a novel hybrid FlexX/FlexS docking approach, whereby the base fragment of the test ligand is chosen by FlexS superposition onto a cocrystallized template ligand and then fed into FlexX for the incremental construction of the final solution. The new approach is tested on the diverse 200 protein-ligand complex dataset that has been previously described for FlexX validation. In total, 62.9% of the complexes can be reproduced at rank 1 by our approach, which compares favorably with 46.9% when using FlexX alone. In addition, we report "cross-docking" experiments in which several receptor structures of complexes with identical proteins have been used for docking all cocrystallized ligands of these complexes. The results show that, in almost all cases, the hybrid approach can acceptably dock a ligand into a foreign receptor structure using a different ligand template, can give solutions where FlexX alone fails, and tends to give solutions that are more accurately positioned.     

Nickel-catalyzed cycloaddition of alkynes and isocyanates

A mild and general route for preparing 2-pyridones from isocyanates and diynes is described. Ni imidazolyidene complexes were used to mediate cyclizations between both internal and terminal diynes with aryl and alkyl isocyanates. In addition, the efficacy of this protocol allows for the preparation of a fused seven-membered pyridone and for three component cyclizations.
